Has anybody else seen or even better tried out these.

ebay link (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4401789567&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT)

Direct plug in replacement for GU10 halogen spot lights, but they are LED instead. Not quite as bright, 25 to 35 watts in place of 50. But actuall power consumptions is 1.5 - 2 watts, with a lifespan of 30 - 50 thousand hours.

It's the spotlight equivalent of the low energy bulb.

They seem to be going on ebay for around £5 a bulb from HK or you can find them on sale on uk websites for about £9.
I've already got the long life low power bulbs in place of incandesants where possible, but these would be ideal to replace my spot bulbs, they also generate virtually no heat, which is another advantage.

I'm guessing these are lumiled units or similar. they are amazing. I ordered a couple from maplin and they are truly dazzling. They also come with a range of collimators and powers supplies.

Unfortunately you are rather tied to using collimators, as the units have integrated optics.

They are hybrids though, which is why they generate a lot of heat for a Light Emitting Diode. The luxeon batwing types have an integrated heatsink, but it's recommended they are mounted thermoconductively(?).

Having looked at the link (after typing all that doh), it actually looks like a bunch normal dome headed hybrid superbright whites. That should give you a max of about 500 lumens, in a shower of 21 mini spots, compared to 1400 in a 50w halogen.

Also, they are very blue. The nice people at www.lumileds.com do warm white LEDs, but this stuff is pretty expensive (and impressive).

Considering its a direct swap and you can just plug it in, I'd go for it, just because LED lighting is going to take over completely from incandescent and flourescent in even more areas than it already has. It's the future. But you may be disappointed in its cold light and that its 21 little spots, not a reflected point source. i.e its actually a bodge.

Incidentally, some enterprising folk have made lumiled torches too, consuming 1000mw and pushing out an astonishing 120 lumens (compared to say 22 from the best 'standard model' white LED.)

just having a look at that link now.

Some of the ebay ones do avertise that they provide a warmer light tone, and some of them come with upto 35 leds in the cluster which should give 833 lumens (by scaling up your 500).
There are also ones that must go through some sort of diffuser lens as they offer a wide angle smooth lighting effect instead of a spot.

I think i'll order a couple just to try them out. I have some downlighters inside my cocktail cabinet but they heat up my alcohol something rotten, so I barely ever use them.
A cool blue light would look quite cool glinting of my glasses, and not heating them to the point where you can't touch them would be a bonus.

Go for it. Still trying to fit 'cocktail cabinet' into my mental image of you. Does it have a very old tub of Maraschino Cherries lurking in the back, behind the unopened Creme de Menthe?

I'd say that leds are your ideal solution for cold lighting though.

lol - it's quite well stocked actually, I built it specially. Glass doors, glass shelf with crystal/glasses on the top. Mirrored rear, black tiled sides and base. Two spot downlighters set into the top.

Filled with cocktail ingredients. My whiskey doesn't fit so that's on it's own shelf in the living room.
Let me see if I have a photo online....

here we go (http://cyclone.servehttp.com/images/Our%20House/dining%20room/IMG_0306.JPG) quite large though.

ordered a pair of "warm white dichroic GU10 LED spots" from ebay for £10.

I'll report back on what they're like once I've got them and installed them.
