This is in the 70's, mind. A Honda C70 (big laugh) which I rode in to a lamp post on Brightside Lane (1976). Still managed to flog for more then twice what I paid for it. Followed by a Honda CB125 which I wrote off on the bend below what used to be known as Stannington college. It was icy and was being an idiot. The guy that came to help was more interested in saving the bike than me. 'You awrite mate, I'll shift thee bike then!!' 'Oy, I think ma leg's broke'.

So I then bought a Yamaha YAS1, 2 cylinder 125cc. Went like s**t off a shovel until it vibtrated itself apart. Got ten quid for scrap and bought a CZ175. Three weeks later some sod nicked it. It was found in Wooley woods so I didn't get the insurance. Not ridden one since1979.

Well, so far in the last 12 months I have had a Yamaha XJ750 which some scrote nicked after I had it 3 weeks, then a 535 virago, sold that to get an XJ600.

Sold that on ebay for a silly amount of money and now have a Suzuki RF 900R....

quite happy with it (for the time being)

Right, finally got round to posting in this thread.

I'm a biker who started out racing Minimoto (now the scourge of the pavement, everywhere) when I was about 8 or 9 and graduated onto slightly bigger things. Now I content myself with the occasional trackday on my Modstock TZ125.

Roadbikes wise, I've got a slightly poorly NC30 after a bit of tyre/oil interface leading to fairing/handlebar/exhaust pipe damage. I'll probably get it fixed for next spring, fair weather biker that I am.

My old mans got an extremely delapidated VFR750FT which he loves to bits but in darker moments threatens to upgrade to a Blackbird.

There was a thread a little while ago with a few people trying to rustle up some interest in doing some trackdays or going en-masse to some Brit Superbike events. At the time I was living outside of Sheffield so couldn't really make it, but it might to nice to toodle on out again come the better weather.

As bikes go yours is definatly a sports bike, but classification wise it comes under 125. If I say that there's all sports bikes going then it puts some people off.

You've got plenty of time to get used to that bike anyway, spring is a while away yet :( (hurry up spring and summer)

i started out with a gsxr f slingshot 750 i think it was called ,that lasted two weeks before a tree ran out and hit me , got a pre diversion xj 750 now, i was looking at a new or very nearly new bike next summer , 750 to 1000, was thinking about a r1, is there any good alternatives?

fredsredhat
23-12-2005, 20:18
from a XJ 750 to a R1 will feel like a mini to a ferarri. you'll love it. get a few insurance quotes before you buy, they can be quite pricey. i think most insurance companys insist on a cat 1 alarm and garaged.

I was waiting near the bottom of The Moor for my bus, this afternoon (Christmas eve) and saw, roaring along Charter Row, a convoy of bikers, dressed up in Father Christmas costumes.

What a wonderful sight!

I presume these were members of the group of bikers who collect and distribute Xmas presents to disadvantaged kiddies.

Excellent! the sight of them really cheered me up.

(and, incidentally, if any of you members of this club are reading this thread:- thank you, and well-done for what you do for these kiddies!)

Here's my bike - Suzuki GS500e - bought March 2005 after 15 years away, to help me get back into things.

I'm now after something a little larger - though not too large due to the insurance.

lalaland

GS500e is an excellent choice for a first 'big bike'.

They are easy to ride, comfortable, cheap to insure etc. and are often the choice of many training schools (I learnt on one).

You didn't mention what type of bike you wanted though?

I love sports bikes, but they aren't everyone's cup of tea.

I would suggest if you want something faster, unbelievably more fun and not too much of an insurance increase that you take a look at a Honda VFR400 NC30.

Yes it's a 400cc bike and 100cc smaller than what you are riding now, but it's a hell of a lot faster and more fun.

I have one currently and don't let the 400cc part fool you. It can easily manage 0-60 in 4 seconds and a top speed of 140mph!

They are cheap to run, very reliable and cheap to buy as well (mine will be up for sale soon for about £1,000 :D if I get enough together for my next bike in spring).

They easily keep up with most bigger bikes too.

My mate has an Aprillia 1000cc sports bike which is very quick. On the straights he can leave me behind, but on the corners he can't even come close to losing me. I can beat him every time due to the NC30 being one of the best corner eating monsters in the world.

I would seriously give it a look, even if you buy before I sell mine. They are definatly the most over looked sports bikes due to their size, but so much fun it's unbelievable.

fred_notdead
28-12-2005, 08:07
Yes LaLa you're right, a fairly comfy bike, but once you reach a 'certain' speed you need strong neck muscles to hold on against the wind rush.
Although I guess it could easily do 70 all day on the motorway, and around town it will pull in the wrong gear without stalling, which is useful for newbies. They are really cheap to run with upto 60 miles per gallon, depending how hard you ride.

The next bike I'm thinking of is a YZF 600R Thundercat or the Honda NT650v Dullsville, (both low insurance, £90 extra) as I'd like to get out around the country a little more. I looked at a GSXR 600 but I would have had an extra 500 quid to pay for insurance.

I looked at a GSXR 600 but I would have had an extra 500 quid to pay for insurance. The YZF is a good bike. 2 of my neighbours have them (one is selling his). The GSXR is an extremely nice bike and is in my list of 3 for a wanted bike (GSXR 600, ZXR 600, Ducatti 740) but you are right, it would cost more on insurance than the other two you mention.

I've had a play with a GSXR, they are fun and a bit more roomy than my NC30 although performance wise there's not much in it and the NC30 seems better for cornering.

As for country riding, there's a few of us going riding once the weather's nice (and I've got to get some new tyres) from the forum if you want to join in?

LaLa - Is there any chance that your neighbour is selling a blue/white YZF 600R, roughly a 2000 model, with less than 20,000 on the clock? If so, what is the asking price? ;)

The other alternative is to wait 'till I clock up a year's no claims in March, and then checkout the insurance again on a different 600cc, such as a CBR.

I would do this to be honest, my insurance dropped quite noticably after my first year, especially if you have a direct access license (direct access gets cheaper insurance that restricted).

The CBR is a very nice 600. They tend to differ based on what model you want. Early versions are nice comfy rides but still fun. If you have a bit more cash take a look at the CBR600FS or the new CBR600 RR (which is the mutts nuts in black!).

Which ever you get I expect to see you ready for the Sheffield Forum ride later this year :D

Hello-may I join you on the forum ride out?

I’ve a CBR600F, and I love it. I bought it new in 2003 and racked up 16000 miles on it since (now needs its service-£350!!).
Anyway, the trouble I have is that I don’t know many that ride so would love to join in on an excursion and get to know a few like minded folk.
Oh, I’m a steady rider too since being knocked off my old Fazer, grrrrr

 All are welcome. I think there was something organised before but I didn't really keep up to date on it.

Anyway, Henrietta passed her CBT recently so I said we should go for a ride and now we are just recruiting more and more, so come along :)

Anyone on two wheels is welcome and I suspect it will be mixed ability and bikes, so it's not going to be a case of us blasting off over the horizon at daft speeds leaving some of you behind.

The route's not yet planned (although there are some suggestions) and a date's not yet set, but I think the closer we get to some good weather the better an idea we'll have.

Cat and fiddle would be a good ride, some nice roads and a great place to stop at the top full of bikers and a nice view from the bar (soft drinks only obviously)

Forgot to add, I'm out on mine most weekends when the weather's good, normally with a couple of mates.

We all ride sports bikes so the pace is a little quicker than just a gentle trundle round (we are sensible too, not all sports bike riders are idiots), but if this turns out well then anyone's welcome to ride along when ever they feel like it.

Normally we ride around random areas, but also enjoy the odd blast out on planned trips to different places. We got to Skegness last year for lunch and then back. The place was a bit crappy, but the ride to and from it was excellent! :D

Always happy for more to join in, I'm currently trying to recruit the several bikers that I've seen on my road and the two roads leading off it.

Weh Hey!

Rode the GS500 down to Taz Motorcycles last week, in Peterborough and Part Ex'd it for a blue 2002 YZF 600R Thundercat. Went to look at it and came home with it an hour later. Worth the 4 hour 200 mile round trip :)

Excellent accelleration, (for me at the moment, anyhow).

Enormous comfy seat, tons better mirrors, better wind resistance, tons faster, blah blah blah,

Much more FUN! Yee Ha!

I know this is going slightly off the subject, but I am disposing of a collection of over 100 motorcycle magazines and wonder if anyone would like to make a sensible offer to purchase them from which I will donate all money raised to a cancer charity that my friend is raising money for.
They mainly consist of: Classic Motorcycle Mechanics, Classic Bike, Bike, Used Motorcycle Guide, etc, etc.
All of them are in good condition and I will deliver them free of charge anywhere in South Yorks area.
Many Thanks,

TheMill, Hi. I guess it's a good idea raising the cash for a charity, but when ever I've got a collection of bike mags, car mags, internet/PC mags etc. I usually drop them of at either the local doctors or dentist's. Everytime I go they are bloody full of teen or womens mags so I try to re-address the balance. Not excatly a charity but at least it could be useful for some other guys?

AND if it gets someone else thinking of biking, it will be worth it. Spread the word - teach the gospel according to Saint Freedom an Independance...
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! :)

VFR 800, ideal machine, keeps up with the bad boys and fully dressed its ideal for touring. I also have an original 1999 R1 with 1700 (yes that is seventeen hundred) miles on the clock and she is up for grabs. Its not mine but belongs to a pal who has moved out of the UK. Its immaculate as you can imagine and he wants about 4.5K if anyone is interested. No test rides though, you can ride it when you've bought it.

I have so got to stop lurking on this thread... :(

I miss my bike SO MUCH!!!

Sorry, but i've got to get it out.

I sold it a few months ago to pay overdraft off, first sensible thing i've ever done. Now I'm considering selling a kidney (someone elses of course :) ) to get a bike, I miss having my own wheels so badly!

I've even had a few driving lessons, pretending to be enjoying it, but its pants, sat in a big metal box lumbering about stood in queues, watching you guys fly past *rant*

If anyone knows of anyone flogging a cheap (and I do mean cheap) road worthy 250/400 bike let me know, I don't want to spend too much because i'm still *cough* restricted *cough* for another year, and when i'm unrestricted I'll get something nice then.

Get yourself on autotrader.co.uk, go to bikes and do a search for VFR400. Get the NC30 model (around £1,500 for a decent one and less if you have the time to work on it) and it will last you forever if you look after it and they are the best 400s in the world!

A good thing to sign up to - the sodding ramblers (ever-so-polite types that they are) are constantly whining that they want sole access to 100% of the paths out there, rather then just 95% as they have now.

Poor dears.

Poor dears.

This petition isn't about gaining footpaths, simply reclaiming the lanes lost post NERC bill.
Walkers already have 100% useage, plus "Right to Roam".
Since the loss of RUPPs, we LEGAL riders are now down to 1.5% (not 5% as stated by Thatcher).
The knock on effect with the loss of these roads, is that many link routes are know gone (imagine trying to drive round a circle with chunks of it missing!).
This then forces users to return along the same road doubling, in effect, its traffic.
Sadly the loss of RUPPS has even isolated some BYWAYS that we are allegedly still able to use within said 1.5%.

Please help and sign up. You don't have to be a biker or have a bike, just a sense of unbiased, open-minded, fairness.

Many thanks, HAPPY NEW YEAR

A Yamaha dragstar 1100 chopped custom.

Looks nothing like the posey shiny chromed up jap Harley copy I bought 14 months ago. Its now black. VERY black. .......... All over. Everything that's "surplus to requirements" has gone in the shed and its been stripped bare and blacked out. lots of powder coated parts including side panels, engine casings, yolks, bars, risers, switchgear, forks, etc. Side mount number plate (fabricated by my own fair hand following my inheritence of a welder recently). Very tight budget but I'm trying to do it the old fashioned way and make what I need myself. High on enthusiasm, less so on talent.

Hello,

Ive got a ZXR 400.

Had a slight spill back in May some time so i'm slowly getting it fixed up and back on the road. All the mechanical stuff is done and its mot'd, taxed and insured just need to strip and sand the repaired and new fairings so I can get them re-sprayed. Then its a simple case of getting my confidence back.

Need to keep riding, I think ive managed to get out 3 times this year which I'm sure contributed to me slight off. Theres no room for error and if you dont ride regular enough it can end in tears. (Sorry to my bike).

By the way. powder coating. Its a funny old game isn't it? Very expensive to have done at a place that specialises in doing such things to motorcycles. Incredibly cheap if you use one of the companies in sheffield that specialises in powder coating stuff on an industrial scale. Get em to "pop it through" with a batch of gates or fire exit stairs and the price comes down. I had a big box (a very big box) of bits n bobs, bars, brackets, trim, etc coated for £25. This only works if you want a common colour coated (remember, my bike's black) and it helps if the bloke that takes it in for you is a biker and will love and cherish your bits rather than chuck em in and hope for the best.

Worked for me. I also got a car body repair place to spray bake some bits, again loads cheaper than a "specialist" bike place, again, the bloke was a biker.

The moral is . . . . . If you're on a budget, think outside the box. Bike "specialists" are often more expensive than bikers who have a special skill or resource.

Any bikers out there who do something interesting for a living? I'm looking for someone to turn me up some footpegs and foot controls next. My budget won't stretch to a lathe!

Anyone can help out with this one?
Not the best bike in the world , but I am looking at buying a new Royal Enfield Bullet 350, only because I have always like the looks and they are reducing the price to clear them.
The problem being I have always ridden left hand change bikes and on the old model Bullet it is right hand change.
I know Enfield now do left hand change, but this in on the more modern looking model which I am not struck on.
Is there anyone who can manufacturer a linkage system that would run from the gear selector shaft on the left, underneath the bike and fit to a gear pedal on the right and vice versa with the brake pedal?

Thanks.

hey john t.

Ride safe, ride fast, ride long.

It's all about enjoying it!
Don't make dodgy decisions. If you're riding faster than you can think, you're riding too fast. Listen to your uncle Grin (who learned the hard way, which is of course a path you could take if you choose, but why would you want £1000's lost in broken bike, kit, health, etc? wish I'd listened!). Definitely easier said than done, even now, but always worth the effort of trying to decrease the death statistics by riding within you and your bike's capabilities. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Honest
