voodoo chile!---for the intro alone!---hendrix could make his guitar talk!---tragic waste of talent when he passed away so young.

ive gone for crosstown traffic but if i had to choose a hendrix album it would have to be electric ladyland quite possibly one of the albums of the 60s:)

I voted Voodoo Chile cos Hulk Hogan used to use it as his entrance theme in WWE before he went back to "Real American".

I agree with Jeff Healy good stuff, also in the Hendrix style is Frank Marino, a superb guitarist i recently saw him at this years Rock & Blues Bike festival with his band Mahogany Rush amazing.
I voted 'All along the watchtower' just because i love the song, it's Dylans but i do like the hendrix version, and even the U2 version.

I had the misfortune of interviewing Jeff Healey some years ago when he was briefly popular. He was particularly difficult and obtuse for some reason and that's coloured my opinion of his work ever since.

He's a great player though, even if his albums have gone downhill since the early days. He plays sitting down with the guitar on his lap, fretting the strings by pressing down from above, piano style.

I saw him live a couple of times and being blind, he's quite scary when he stands up to dance around during a solo. The bass player has to make sure he doesn't get too carried away and fall off the front of the stage! He does this by gently shoulder charging Jeff back towards his seat.

I don't think Healey sounds particularly like Hendrix, though. Someone who DOES owe his entire career to Jimi is Robin Trower. He took one aspect of the Hendrix sound and ran with it. 20 albums later, he's still running.

By "Voodoo Chilli", I presume you mean Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)?

That's the fast version of the song that gets played on the radio and was covered by SRV.

There's also a much longer, slower version of the song on Electric Ladyland (without the "Slight Return" in the title) with Steve Winwood on keyboards and Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane on bass.

I never wanna hear Voodoo Chile, Foxy Lady or Purple Haze ever again!

Room 101 'em! Please!

I'm sick of Hey Joe and Red House too

The track I'm really in love with is Burning of the Midnight Lamp, I play that every chance I get. Still have a sneaking fondness for Little Wing though.....:)

Little Wing

Album version is a bit lame, but live it's usually good. I have a version from the Albert Hall (bought Sheffield Show 1981) that I love.

It's so good a song that it remained listenable in Sting's hands, on the otherwise dull Soul Cages album.

Killing Floor. a bluesy number, reminds me of JS blues explosion, stevie ray vaughn etc. Top number. Now playing on Phanfm (and some more hendrix, hey why not man)

Hi,

One of the better polls this!

My vote goes to 'all along the watchtower',

Arguably one of the best covers of all time, Bob Dylan's orignal version demonstrated Dylan's rare gift as a songwriter, but it was the Hendrix music that gave the song a blend of confusion and intensity. Almost rock perfection.

It's a Howlin' Wolf song that Jimi regularly played live. In fact when Hendrix got up to jam with Cream at the Central London Poly in October 1966, that was the song they played. Eric Clapton was so depressed afterwards, he almost changed careers.

I don't think it appears on any of Jimi's studio albums, but starting with the BBC Radio One CD, it is on several of his live albums.

Did he record 'Bridge of Sighs?' A friend taped me that about a gazillion years ago.

Maybe I should look on Amazon and re-discover.....

Oh, I voted 'Red House'

That's the one. Robin Trower took that slow, dreamy minor key stuff that Hendrix used to do and developed it into a fine art.

I admire your logic. Just because Sheffield pub band murders it, that makes it a bad song. Far from it. Voodoo Chile is a great song made even better by the great Stevie Ray Vaughan's wonderful cover version

As Robin Trower has been mentioned on this thread, it should be noted he plays the Boardwalk in May 25th :)

Also, sadly Jeff Healey died recently, RIP Jeff

But, but, but...

Neither Hey Joe nor All Along the Watchtower are Jimi Hendrix songs, although his covers are by far the best versions.

I wouldn't like to choose the best, there's so many, but 1983 deserves an honourable mention and isn't on the list above.

I'm voting 'Machine Gun', Hendrix at his very best. I can't be arsed to have a discourse on the man, but i'll defend him to the end. A truly truly superb musician.

I'd go with "Little Wing" or "All Along The Watchtower" to be honest.

Little Wing.

Funnily enough SRVs version made me newly appreciate the song and both versions are wonderful.

Saw Hendrix at the City Hall in 68 or 69. It totally blew me away.

It is difficult to appreciate these days. It was just so different to what we were used to.

Anyone else who was there?????

It's open to interpretation. In the UK you could answer yes, but he played on the Chitlin Circuit and wasn't one of their outstanding musicians. In Peter Guralnick's Sam Cooke biography it gives a funny story of Hendrix being bullied by older musicians. I'd type it up if i could be arsed to go and find it.
