Anyone fancy owning a football club? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/8624597.stm)

Many careless owners.

Currently needs massive restoration in order to regain past glory.

May suit fans cooperative or Russian oligarch.

No time wasters!

You forgot to mention, 200 Million in debt. How come Liverpool can be that much in debt and not get put into administration and get 10 points deducted while poor old Portsmouth who were only £60M in debt did. :loopy:

Ummm it's simple, because Liverpool have been paying their bills, and Portsmouth haven't.

Its figures now why Liverpools fairly recent signings apart from Torres have been pretty average all in all, too many bills left to pay and no money left to spend on the thing that matters to bring success, PLAYERS !

Didn't Liverpool spend £17 million on Glen Johnson and £20 million on Aquilani in the summer?

That £20m was a great investment!

Very true, that is the difference. I wonder if they will have to sell a few players next season, though. Without the Champions League money they might find it harder to pay the bills.

I was reading from one of the statements made by the current owners- that they hoped by selling the club and getting new investors, the Manager can make new signings to make realistic challenges- but Benitez has been buying and has spent, only that he has spent poorly.

These are some of his 'bad' buys- a few who literally came and went:

Josemi £2m
Antonia Nunez (swap)
Fernando Morientes (c. £6m)
Jan Kromkamp (swap)
Mark Gonzalez (£4.5m)
Craig Bellamy (£6m )
Ryan Babel (£11.5m) - still 'waiting' to fulfill his potential:D
Jermaine Pennant (£6.7m)
Robbie Keane (£20.3m )
Charles Itandje (goal keeper available for sale)
Gabriel Paletta (£2m )
Philipp Degen
Andrea Dossena (£7m )
Mauricio Pellegrino (now a coach)
Andriy Voronin

If I was the new owner, I would get rid of Benitez -you can sense he wants to move (with Juventus favorites maybe). I think Mark Hughes could do a good job there as well as Martin O' Neil.

They do manage to get players to play better and build a team, not rely on two or three players.

To this day i cannot belive that fella is still at the helm at Anfield, i have no malice towards Liverpool atall fans or the club, but Benitez seems lost at times players and selection wise especially, Gerrards face was a picture the other day when Torres went off, injured or not you could sense theres a lot of unrest in the camp.
Get Gerrard to Chelsea so he has a realistic oppurtunity to win the English Premiership.

According to transferleague (http://transferleague.co.uk/)Liverpools spend this season was £-4m which left Benitez with more to work with than Ferguson or Wenger.

The "big four" spent as follows:

Chelsea £13.5m
Liverpool -£4
Arsenal -£31m
United -£56.5m

As a Man U fan I find Liverpool's plight hilarious...unfortunately the yank scum that have bought Man U could do exactly the same to them. Starve them of funds to pay off their debt. Look at this season. Even the most die hard Man U fan couldn't argue that the squad isn't lightweight and is nothing without Rooney...yet where is the money to buy a half decent striker?.....Paying off the yanks debt!

That was two summers back. If not for the Glazier's debt there's no way United would have had only Rooney, Berbatov and Owen this season.

No, because Real Madrid have openly admitted that they want him and Man Utd couldn't manage to stop Beckham or van Nistelrooy or Ronaldo from going. Real Madrid look at who the best players in the world are and buy them. So i'm actually going on history and what the club have said. Also because Man Utd would have lost money last season if the hadn't have sold Ronaldo, so I assume they will need to do the same again or go into more debt. I do think it depends on how he does in the World Cup, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if Man City come in with a bid for him in the summer.

Ferguson didn't even try to stop Beckham or Van Nistelrooy leaving he wanted rid of both of them which is why Ruud went for such a small fee.

Please do point us to direct quotes from Real Madrid saying they're going to bid £90m or any other fee for Rooney.

Incidentally the News of the World now says Madrid are after Tevez because:

"Rooney, though, is likely to seek an improvement in his deal at United rather than move to Spain."

Just like the Sun's Rooney story there's no quotes or anything of substance it's just crap they made up to sell papers to morons.

Obviously you don't want you best player to leave, I can understand your defensiveness. I only said that it LOOKS like he might be off in the summer. I think he wants to stay but he is going to want higher wages and plenty of teams will be willing to offer him them, i'm sure. I'm not so convinced that United will want to, or be able to, meet his wage demands.

I do not have a copy of the newspaper that I read in January (this isn't a new story) but there were quotes from Florentino Perez saying Rooney was one of this main targets (I never mentioned a fee and neither did he in his quotes). Like I said, though, I wouldn't be surprised if Man City come in with a bid, especially if they lose Tevez.

Just as a side not, I don't read any tabloids but it doesn't help your argument to call their readers morons and then use their quotes to try and back up your own arguments. I mean, I know that you would agrue with fog, but what is your point here? You don't think that other teams want Rooney? I would think you should be proud that other teams want him, he is one of the best players in the world at the moment. If your point is that they will try to buy him but he won't want to go then I think you might be right, at least next season. These stories (completely 'unsourced rumour' like this time) started about Ronaldo two years before he actually went, but when Real get an idea in their head they usually make it happen.

That's all I have to say about that. He may stay, who knows, but I think there will be an awful lot of interest in him this summer if he doesn't mess up in the World Cup. I actually hope he stays in England, he is great to watch at the moment. :)

There was no qualifier like "might" in you initial post:

"Only Berbatov and Owen next season by the look of it!"

Which is an assertion that Rooney will most likely leave.

I was clearly using the tabloid quote to illustrate how made up and worthless such stuff is to the extent that it contradicts it self from day to day even when coming form basically the same paper.

The stuff about Ronaldo going to Real wasn't 'completely unsourced' it was very well sourced with quotes from both Real Madrid about wanting to sign Ronaldo and quotes from Ronaldo about wanting to play for Real Madrid. In contrast you have neither quotes from Madrid or Rooney, if any such recent quote of the kind you claim existed the Sun would most likely have used it in their made up story the other day to try and make it seem more credible.

I responded to your initial silly claim with a lighthearted remark mocking those who fall for paper rumours getting the following anything but lighthearted responce:

"No, because Real Madrid have openly admitted that they want him and Man Utd couldn't manage to stop Beckham or van Nistelrooy or Ronaldo from going. Well done you've found lots of articles repeating the initial made up story (you know as "rumours tend to get repeated) which include the words Perez & Rooney. Couldn't help but notice though that no none of them include the quotes from Perez whch you claim exist and which make this a credible story instead of being yet another worthless tabloid rumour that you've fallen for.

If you take such worthless stories as valid evidence then "by the look of it" every vaguely big name player is going to be signed by half a dozen sides this summer. Just take a look at the Rumour Mill (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/series/rumourmill) and then tell me again with a straight face that you stand by your comments.

for decent signings though, i would be looking for a new manager, considering Benitez dealings in the transfer market
