I will be moving to Sheffield shortly ... I am looking out for a place to rent ... Does anybody out there have any recommendations about the areas that are good - read, nice and quiet?

I would like to stay in an area that has a health club nearby, and maybe even some sports and recreation facilities.

Any advice that anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Cheers!

At risk of getting my head bitten off, I would comment that, as with most cities, the West end is the quiet end; leafy suburbs and all that... just avoid all of the areas being requested by students if you want peace and quiet.
The East end is the post-industrial bit, but making a slow recovery.
South of the city is the new urban sprawl.
Generalisation is a precarious business, 'cos someone is now going to post a reply accusing me of favouritism/racism/placeism or not being a vegetarian, but suffice to say, I moved to the east end from the west because I needed access to the M1, not because I wanted to improve the area!

Goes without saying that you are going to need a bit more brass to live in the quiet areas, unless you stay in the outskirts.

If you want what you say want...I don't think it exists in Sheffield!!

S8 will give you local access to Virgin Gym, Fitness First, and Esporta!!

Good shops, housing and local ameneties.

Can't guarantee peace and quiet though!

Avoid S2, specifically the Manor estate, it's full of Chavs (http://www.chavscum.co.uk).

S6 is great though, Hillsborough, Walkley, Stannington, Rivelin, all great areas with easy access to shops, public transport (OK the buses in Stannington ain't much cop  ) but mostly fine areas with very little crime or anything like that...

Somewhere near Abbeydale sports club might do the trick.

Hi, I moved here last year to work at the Hallamshire. I rented at Walkley which I came to hate because it's all hilly terraced roads which were just choc-a-bloc with cars, it was noisy and I thought most of the houses should come under a slum clearance scheme. I found the west of the city rather like the suburbs of London and started to look around for somewhere less congested. I rather liked Grenoside but there's not much to rent but then I moved to Rotherham hospital so started to look in Rotherham. I finished up at Whiston which is lovely and am now looking to buy either at Bramley or Brinsworth, both have lots of decent housing which is so affordable and have so much in terms of shops, pubs, transport, sports facilities etc. and you don't have that claustraphobic feeling you get in streets and streets of horrible terraced housing. At the end of the day you've got to get to work so that will dictate your choice. I personally found Sheffield city centre the pits so I've been lucky I guess.

the manor isn't as bad as it used to be, i lived there for 19 years, (i'm only 21). now living in parson cross (s5). beleive it or not, in the quiet part of it, nr ecclesfield. hillsborough would be a decent move, lots of ammenities, public transport running throughout, dunno bout the peace and quiet bit though.

Didn't realise that you were such a noisy person, so the advice then would be to avoid the area near the water tower?
Sheffield 8, Woodseats, Norton, Greenhill, Bradway, Chancet Wood, Derbyshire lane, these are all area's that I'd consider depending of course on your budget and the type of property you require.
I'd avoid Batemoor, Lowedges and Jordanthorpe unless youu are used to living on a council estate and it's associated problems.

I moved to Sheffield 6 years ago and have never looked back!

I always rented in the S10 and S11 areas - which I'd heartily recommend over anywhere else in Sheffield.

I've now just bought a house in Crookes.

Hunters Bar/Ecclesall Road is fabulous - beautiful park, Botanical Gardens, great shops, pubs, restaurants - everything you need on your doorstep. There's also a squash club and a very nice Green's Gym in the area.

It's quite a studenty area but is residential too - and generally we weren't too bothered by noise.

It can be pricey - though not too bad if you're renting.

We couldn't afford to buy there, so my boyfirend and I have just bought a house in Crookes and we LOVE it there.

We thought we'd really miss Hunters Bar but Crookes is great too. Again, everything you need on your doorstep. It just has a really lovely feel to it and is a great place to live!! Our street is just off the High Street but is surprisingly quiet and we're never bothered by noise. You can also use the S10 Universtity gym which is very well equipped - plus use of the sports facilities.

Feel free to PM if you need any details.

Good luck - I hope it goes well. If you stick to S10/S11 you can't go wrong!!
