I think the two compliment one another; any women who wants a manicure is obviosuly very fashion conscious and jewellery is an integral part of fashion.

Have you thouhgt of setting up as a mobile manicurist...you will have a captured audience for your jewellery as well (two sales opportunities for every client visit)

Speak to BiG in Sheffield for help and support and the very best luck to you too.

About craft fairs for the hand made jewellery? There's always people on here wanting stalls for their events

Good timing, there's the Enterprise Show next week: http://www.theenterpriseshows.com/ShowDetails/Sheffield.aspx

I went there several years ago when I was looking to start up my current business. It's a handy place to gather contact details for all the people you need.

Highly recommended.

No Im not unfotunetly. Im a single mum trying to get off benafits :(

My advice would be to get a job in a nail salon. To be able to start a business you need to know the industry indside out.

Hours may not be perfect but there are ways to sort it. Too many people go into self-employment as it is an easy way to get the hours they want on the terms they want. Whilst you are getting off benefits it is best to have a regular income from an employer. You will get to know people and could start the business in your spare time, and if it proves a success then you could leave the job and become self employed full time.

Not necessarily. It depends on many factors. If you want to be very successful in a very competitive market, then yes you do need to know it inside out, but if you're offering something a bit different or just want to improve your own situation, then you may not.
And it depends on your overheads. If these are kept low, then it doesn't matter so much if you can only work a bit.
Whilst you are getting off benefits it is best to have a regular income from an employer.
Something that they won't tell you around here, and indeed will deny all knowledge of, but in other parts of the country there are schemes to help people on benefit get started.
In fact, these schemes are simply a presentation of the existing rules, so you do not need to be on the scheme to do it (I think).

How it works is that you financially separate yourself from your business. Then when you engage in your business activity, any money coming in goes into your business.
The business can spend this money on things for the business, but if you yourself don't take any, then you should still be eligible for benefit.

However, the Jobcentre here do not seem to have the faintest clue how to deal with this kind of thing.

BiG was the Sheffield name for the now nation wide Solutions For Business. Some of the business coaches are based with SENTA and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce together at Albion House near The Wicker.

Before you see a SENTA business advisor you will need to see a Solutions For Business Enterprise Coach.
