View Full Version : Setting my memory speed correctly?

Hi folks,

Normally I'd be able to sort this myself but haven't played around with memory/CPU speeds for a long time.

Basically I have this CPU:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Intel-Core-2-Quad-Q9400-Yorkfield-Core-S775-266-GHz-1333MHz-6MB-L2-Cache-8x-Retail

and this memory:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-%282x2GB%29-Corsair-TwinX-XMS2-DDR2-PC2-6400-%28800%29-240-Pins-Non-ECC-UnbufferedCAS-5-5-5-18

Now I've got everything set to auto but the memory only gets recognised as PC2-5300. I'm figuring it's to do with multipliers and what not but I'm not sure what to set in the BIOS.

If I go to manually change the memory speed in the BIOS I have DDR2-833 as an option but not DDR2-800 which is what I expected?

So what do I need to change :)

Ta!
Paul.

if you set it to DDR2-833 @ 6-6-6-20 you should be fine....

but thats the problem with (I assume) cheap(er) motherboards, the CPU FSB is still tied into the RAM FSB and directly effects it..

but to be honest, its a 166 bus with an 8x for the cpu... the ram would be 166x4 (664) or 166x5 (830) - and thats your problem

(the Maths.. CPU Bus of 1333 / 8 = 166, 166 *4 or *5 )

but yeah, as said, 833 / 6-6-6-20 should be fine..

Cheers Ghozer. TBH it's a good board (Asus P5B Deluxe) but it's getting on a bit now :)

I can alter the FSB and memory speed independently but those are the options I get with everything set to Auto.

I'll take a look at your manual a little later and advise the best overall settings then... But for now what I said would be fine.

Cheers, much appreciated. To be more specific it's the P5B Deluxe WiFi/AP model :)
