The Wall sounded dated and plodding in 1980 - 30 years on I dread to think what it will sound like.

Thanks for your opinion which I would fight to the death blah-de-blah...

Me ... I thought I might like to go to a show.

I've seen Floyd put on some brilliant ones but they were nearly 40 years ago - before nearlly every song had a leaden blues solo from Gilmour.

I agree with you totally about the Wall. The album started off strongly but disappeared up its own backside toward the end with all that pretentious operatic stuff about Vera Lynn. It does have some great songs in there though, most of them by Gilmour.

Speaking of which, I must disagree with you on your second point. Gilmour is a fabulous guitarist and only got better as time went on.

The only blues solo (leaden or otherwise) you'll find on a Floyd album is Money from DSOTM and even that is partly in 7/8 time which lifts it away from the run-of-the-mill blues structure.

I agree he does have a certain similar approach to many of his solos but it's not usually based on a pentatonic blues scale.

I saw Floyd live when Syd was in the band and I feel that as a guitarist Gilmour has always been streets ahead.

He sure does. All the same plodding pace - the same "spacey" effects - essentially slightly more dynamic versions of Pete Green doing "Albatross". He was better impersonating Syd on Ummagumma.

Surely that's more of a criticism of Floyd's overall sound and song structure than Gilmour's playing? He can only work within the framework of what he's given.

But yes, I admit they did love that slow Em to A major vamp, especially on DSOTHM.

Then again, the aforementioned Money and Have A Cigar from Wish You Were Here were quite a different matter.

If everybody had the same opinion on things then the world would be a poorer place. Personally I still think it is a brilliant album and love listening to it and will be going to see the show.

Brilliant - when? Where? (apologies for being off topic)

I have to agree with Longcol and Mojoworking regarding The Wall, but I hope everyone who goes has a great time.

Spalding, Lincs 1967. The first LP was still some months away, although I think they'd had a couple of singles out.

See the poster below. Note Floyd are 4th on the bill.

Not a bad line-up for a quid, is it? :hihi:

Not a bad-line up! That's quite an understatement. ;)

I bet that was an incredible night! I'll try to contain my envy...

It was more of an all day event than a night Jen. :hihi:

At that point Floyd's light show consisted of a bedsheet draped over the amps, upon which a school projector showed wonky home-made liquid crystal slides.

Here's a link to a website with recollections of some of the fans who attended.
