Are you sure it's not just the fan coming on and off kall ?

That's the closest thing to a buzzing sound i have. It could also be the hard drive but that's more like a 'chattering' noise :?

Kall,

Assuming there's not a bee trapped in there.... :)

Next time it buzzes, gently apply pressure with your finger tips at various points around the case.

If the buzz stops or changes, then it may be a loose screw that's just rattling in it's hole, or sme other loose mechanical bits and pieces.

It does sound fan like - not all fans sound the same, of course.

The other possibility - have you turned down the volume on the laptop? If there's a floating connection on the audio side of the PC it's possible that that might cause a buzz from the laptop loudspeaker. If it stops when you turn the volume down or mute the audio then that would be the problem.

Joe,

When i turn the volume down the buzzing sound drops proportionately and no sound when you mute.

Do you figure its got to with laptop speakers

are you using windows xp with it? there is a known problem with some HP laptops (particularly the nx8220 range) which causes the bluetooth/usb units to emit a high pitch noise..

there is currently a fix available for windows xp (you are right, it is to do with the acpi settings), but if you're trying to run linux on it there's not a lot you can do..

I had something similar with a desktop computer. Re-installing the sound drivers did the job nicely.
If your using XP just uninstall the sound drivers and reboot. XP will load a new set for you.
