View Full Version : Plus size fashions/underwear in Sheffield.
alternageek 28-08-2005, 13:18 As just recently moving to Sheffield & England and losing almost 2 stone, none of my clothes fit me properly anymore. Is there anywhere for someone whos a size 18/20 to shop?? I've looked in Evans and all they seem to be carrying is everything thats in that "boho hippie" aka I pay a lot to look like I wear clothes that have been on the floor way too long to know if they're clean or not so I'll still wear it look. I've also tried next, but everything my size is in their catalog (which I am having mailed to me). Neu Look (near the O2 store on the Fargate) or something is okay, but they also carry to a very trendy look.
Is there anywhere else in town that just has Gap-like clothes for someone a lil more bigger? Also where can one find bras that fit some one whos a 42DD and doesnt look like my Nan should be wearing it???
Thanks.
PS. I did a search with nothing relating coming back.
i think there is a big/tall shop at bottom of the moor...but having not been in i dont know if its just mens clothing or not...
i am 6'4 but i seem to JUST get by with most trousers etc..
gud luk
Have a read through this thread for Lingerie shops
http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54269
And good luck with your search :)
Edit: Isn't Elvi a 'big' shop, and BHS used to do a 'larger' range, but the one in town seems to be a clearance shop, so you'll probably have to go to Meadowhall for that.
Debenhams and John Lewis should have something suitable too, but don't quote me on that as I don't wear those sizes myself ;)
LellyBee 28-08-2005, 13:52 Needing an unusual size myself for bra's (40F) I found an online supplier who's based near Blackpool, don't be put off by the Home page with pics of girdles and corsets tho', browse on the site for lingerie, bra's nitewear etc, they have some nice "sexy" underwear on there.
I've found it to be very reasonably priced, and the delivery is quite quick too

hmmm ill take a look through there.. are there any places in town or near to look? shopping online right now is a lil difficult for me at the moment... grrr. lol.
Hi you might find what you're looking for in Mark One on the moor,,,,upstairs they have a department for the larger sizes,,,,to the left as you get upstairs!!!
StarSparkle 28-08-2005, 14:19 The only place I can reasonably think of is H&M, currently available at Meadowhall. They cover all sizes, from really petite to really quite large.
They're fashionable, but not outrageously so, and are priced very competitively. Huge range of colours as well, which is what I like about their clothes.
The quality is variable, however, so take care with that. Other than that, Happy Shopping!

Firstly congratulations on the weight loss...
If you are still losing the weight and don't want to be spending a lot try Primark & Matalan.
If you happy to try mail order to I would recommend Simply Be...website here (http://simplybeuk.drct2u.com/home?title=DAL)
Yes, congrats- wish I could do it!
100% behind H&M at Nether Hell, but it does depend on their stock on the day and your ability to rummage (and on your leg length too).
The larger sizes are upstairs, but not really signposted well, so do poke around a bit, and bear in mind that I'm 6'3" and can buy most of my trousers off the peg in H&M standard length. I don't know how that works for those who are average height. This season, loose drawstring linen trousers @£18 have washed really well, and lycra t-shirts that last ages and don't go baggy have both been worn and worn.
For glammy/formal stuff I have always liked Ann Harvey, also at Nether hell, but I rarely need to wear anything so formal these days (I used to live in a suit) and couldn't afford to shop there often, even when I was working.
Have you looked in Tesco at the bras?
No, really, stop laughing- their plain t-shirt bras in white/black/beige are £6 standard price and go up to an H cup. I'm a Fantasie 40f and Tesco 40f fit fab too. I'm too big for their clothes, but they do up to a 20, and they look pretty nifty and very cheap too. The full range is at the big store on Abbeydale Road.
If you come across any nice bras on your journeys in a 46B please let me know(locally please). Many Thanks
Try M&S; TK Maxx - for good bargains but be prepared to look very hard because it is really a case of searching, sifting and personal taste. John Lewis have fairly decent lines eg Willie (but very pricey) Atkinsons for Anne Harvey both of which are best in the sales.
BoroughGal 28-08-2005, 18:04 Dorothy Perkins also go up to a size 20 too in some, if not all the ranges.
Classic Rock 28-08-2005, 20:10 Last time I wandered down Chapel Walk I spotted a larger sized clothes shop.
Try ebay....ok you can't try them on but it's worth a look.
Monsoon in Meadowhall do 18/20.
Etam do larger sizes too - that's a point, where's Etam gone? It was in Meadowhall but seems to have vanished!
I'll second Debenhams.....the Trader section is smart and casual.
If I see any more I'll let you know.
janjan21 28-08-2005, 20:12 Hi i reccomend Sandras on line at Cleavleys for underwear i told my friend lillbee and she is happy with what she found the prices are great i've add quite a few orders from there check it out. I also reccomend JD WILLIAMS home shopper part of simply be i have lost 2 stone and how great i feel now size 18 / 20 and feeling good im lucky my daughters clothes fit me due to her diet too but she'e 18 im 40+.
Applegrim 28-08-2005, 21:03 I'm sure you'll find Bon Marche have a good selection and very inexpensive,Marks and Spencer have some things, but try Shapely figures on the internet, they have really good clothes, and underwear, lingerie andit's all resonably priced.
dieselbabe 28-08-2005, 21:28 I dont like shops to much has the clothes do not fit as well. But ive got a fairy god mother out there that has the answer.
i use this woman http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Big-Girls-Wardrobe
she on ebay but i never ever sent an item back.her clothes fit for the size you want and very trendy too.and a price to suite pocket ok.
irenewilde 28-08-2005, 22:44 Slightly off topic here but I've recently had to buy an evening dress (my first ever) for a posh do. I'm ahem... rather more generously built than I used to be and trying to find something larger than a 16 was a nightmare! I went looking everywhere, but clearly the thinking is that if you're past a size 16, you don't go out, you just sit at home getting depressed about your size! And bras, even if their cup size is big, rarely go past 40". Still looking for a strapless bodyshaper to go underneath the dress, I'll try that Blackpool place...

You could try
www.amplebosom.com (http://www.amplebosom.com)
for things other than everyday bras. They stocked some fabulous stuff for under wedding dresses and the like last time I looked. Also helps that it is run by a Yorkshirewoman.
Good luck- the only stuff harder to find if you're large is exercise clothing. Ridiculous. I may be big, but in order to get smaller I need to go to the gym!
franc1987 30-08-2005, 14:23 For clothes i would recomend
New Look- a lot of trendy stuff but jeans are ace from there- wash and wear brilliantly. You can occaisionally get a nice teeshirt from there, but i think a lot of the things are too fussy and too "try hard trendy" There is a 8-18 section on the top floor and a 16-30 section on the bottom floor
H&M- Ace for teeshirts/jumpers/hoodies. Be prepared not to wear your normal size in there- i always pick up my normal size and get sorely disapointed when they dont fit. I have come to realise in H&M i am 2 sizes bigger in everything- dont get disheartened their clothes are great and wear well! They have got some gorgeous bits in there at the moment but sometimes you have to search a bit harder- also look out for their clearence racks you can get some reall 99p bargins on there!!
Evans- wont go near- i hate it and there clothes dont fit right at all- but thats just my opinion
Gaps XL size is roughly an 18-20 or so i believe so you could try there for teeshirts and odd bits.
Marks and Spencers, Bon Marche, Debanhams, Etam, Monsoon, Mark One all do bigger sizes but never had any experience of this.
I don't usually have a problem with underwear but know marks do a DD-GG section that you could try- and they dont look like something your granny would wear either.
Good luck in your search- i know how it feels!
banesmabes 30-08-2005, 14:42 I tend to find that for the bigger sizes many high street stores only do long length trousers etc (I find this particularly at H&M). This is really frustrating – it’s like they’re saying if you’re big then you also must be really tall! I’m 5’4” and it is very frustrating trying to find trousers that fit and are the right length. Recently bought some from Wallis and had to take them up by 6 inches, even though they were marked as standard length!
I’m size 18/20 and don’t find one particular shop particularly helpful and end up traipsing about all over town looking for something suitable. Sometimes the main chains have nice clothes in bigger sizes, but sometimes not – it seems really hit and miss. I also hate how most clothes in bigger sizes are like tents and not at all flattering. Just because I’d a size 18 doesn’t mean I don’t have a waist to show off!!

I use her as well - she's great. She told me exactly what size I needed (because I seem to be different sizes depending on the shop) and was right, plus the clothes are lovely.
Does anyone know where to get bigger size bras from as i have trouble trying to find anywhere that does them :)
melthebell 18-12-2005, 21:07 lol, ive just posted your request in irc and got the following reply
"(@deKay) Just buy fat granny knickers and add straps"
margarete 18-12-2005, 21:12 Mail order catalogues usually include large size bras.
Go to Debenhams, Go to Coles, Go M&S .....
sam c i been to marks they dont have my size :s dont know about the others
Perfect Fit in Woodseats does most sizes under the sun.
<---------- search button is in that direction. For the record I dont think anyone other than frustrated men are likely to be interested and if that's what you want try skype's "skype me" service which will keep you so busy that you'll be extremely busy for a year of Sundays. :D
GothicCharm 18-12-2005, 21:27 It can be hard to find larger cup sizes as many of my friends have the same problem. I think people are getting slightly over the top with the anger and should perhaps go and cool off before having a go.
Try Primark me and my mates go there.
Mod Note: Cool off a bit folks - any more personal attacks will result in bans being applied.
melthebell 18-12-2005, 21:42 thank god, i thought that big bra thread had been deleted, it was just starting to get warmed up :)
Just in case she is still looking :)

Squashie28 19-12-2005, 08:58 I seriously recommend Dorothy Perkins, their clothing range goes from a size 8 up to a size 22 and they have a really stylish range of clothes in that store, plus they do a petit range if you are like me and on the short side.
Its a shame they havent got many bras for the bustier lady as I really think their bras are lovely.
For underware I recommend the Simply Be catalogue and Evans store, but just be aware that as well as the nice pretty bras in Evans they also do the big ugly bras with the thick straps, so dont be too put off when you start looking.
The inspire collection at new look is okay, but a bit on the tent side which really gets my goat as most larger ladies still need the tailored cut to show off our curvier figure, the inspire collection used to also do bras for the bustier lady but for some reason stopped doing them, crazy if you ask me.
Hope these recomendations help you, let me know how you get on.
Jo
