Joelc 30-08-2005, 07:52 My faves are (In no particular order): Lee Evans Ross Noble Billy Connelly Dave Allen Bill Bailey Joel xxALxx 30-08-2005, 11:03 I've voted for Richard Pryor but I would also go for Chris Rock as well. A mention should also go to Denis Leary. Regular visits to the Lescar mean that mentions must also be made of: Ross Noble - great on TV but has to be seen live to see the best of him. Daniel Kitson - surely the best comedian on the UK circuit at the mo. Seen him twice so far - the first time he did about 5 encores and the second time he went on until 11.30pm. Noel James - Welsh surrealist (anyone heard his joke about the man who rubbed baked beans into his eyes...) Dan Antopolski - Weird, surreal, genius Brendan Riley - Scouse, brilliantly funny If you haven't seen Woody Bop Muddy make damn sure you make the effort next time he is around - totally bonkers :loopy: , record graveyard, and RICE. Doesn't sound great but he's the only guy I ever saw get the full attention of the audience at the Cavendish. And finally it would be a crime not to give a shout out to Toby Foster  - 'nuff said. floyd77 30-08-2005, 11:57 Originally posted by xxALxx A mention should also go to Denis Leary. Not only was he p**s funny but he said a lot of truth as well. Chris Rock and Peter Kay mebbe for silver and bronze. Though Eddie Izzard is good an all nick2 30-08-2005, 12:40 Les Dawson should be in the list. saxon51 30-08-2005, 12:44 Who is the greatest male standup comedian? Didn't Norman Wisdom have his act 40 years earlier? Peter Kay - Very funny comedy actor / writer, but you need more than one routine on stage, and I've heard 'big light' and 'spitting' a few too many times for it to be funny obsdervational humour. Eddie Izzard, Comedy genius but he once utterly bored the pants off me at one gig, so it couldn't be him. There isn't really any single person who could take such a title as it depends on lots of personal / individual preferences. Richard Pryor is well deserved to be on that list, but not a single one of the others IMO, especially Eddie Murphy who just ripped off RP's act. Chris Rock? Puurrrleese! Hmm, now here's a good one to think about going on the list though - Tommy Cooper. spyro2000 30-08-2005, 19:53 Originally posted by Tony Didn't Norman Wisdom have his act 40 years earlier? Peter Kay is very funny, I wouldnt rate him as a top comedian though, well not for standup anyway Eddie Izzard - I cant say that ive seen much of him so I cant comment. Tommy cooper - Not my cup of tea, but I can certainly see why people like him (if that makes any sense). Richard Pryor - Always been my favourite. As for the comparison with Eddie Murphy, I think their styles are quite different, yes there are a few similairities, but I wouldnt go as far as saying Eddie ripped Pryor off, more that Eddie got his inspiration from Richard Pryor and moulded his own routine around this. spook 30-08-2005, 22:31 ............ Saw VW at the City Hall - and she was just so funny. Have to say, the late Tommy Cooper was brilliant. I also admire Eddie Izzard, having seen him at Derby Assembly Rooms. But the best, the very best, just has to be Billy Connolly!  spyro2000 31-08-2005, 00:07 You know ive never ever found Billy Connoly funny at all. I dont know why. A viciously funny and bang-on-the-money social and political commentator, with huge intelligence and perception, and the guts to tell it as it was. A very brave man to do this in 80/90s America. Zinger549 01-09-2005, 11:44 Bill Bailey i've got part trol on dvd. it's so funny daverity 01-09-2005, 12:15 I voted other because my all-time favourite is Dave Allen. One person who doesn't readily spring to mind was the late Bob Monkhouse. I went (very reluctantly) some years ago with my Dad to see him at a show in Liverpool. I had a road to Damascus conversion in there because quite simply he was brilliant. He just reeled joke after joke off for nearly two hours, I PMSL throughout and I just couldn't believe the difference from what he was like on the telly. I've seen Peter Kay twice live. The first time it was funny, second time well to be honest I was bored with it. He's much better as a comedy actor and writer. Steve Coogan's live shows are brilliant but wouldn't class him as a 'stand-up', he uses all his comedy characters in the show and does it well. He was supported by John Thompson, who did Bernard Righton, the politically correct version of Bernard Manning the whole show was hilarious. Coogan seems to have stopped doing the live tours, which is a bit of a shame but I read somewhere that he is doing a film version of Alan Partridge in the near future so that's something to look forward to. Zinger549 18-12-2005, 20:41 Just been watching my Peter kay live DVD's. there so funny coudn't stop laughing :hihi: chocotiger 18-12-2005, 20:44 Peter Kay  Phanerothyme 18-12-2005, 20:59 Bill Hicks of course. The others are nothing but comedians. Rich 18-12-2005, 21:03 Best stand up comedian live I'd say is deffo Billy Connolly, I cried with laughing when we saw him at the City Hall in 2003... It was just after the 9/11 atrocities in New York, and he was courting conroversy by doing jokes about Afghanistan and bin Laden, or bin Liner as he called him  Honestly I was PMSL all night! crazybabe 18-12-2005, 23:41 Peter Kay is funny the first time, but after that it gets boring as its the same stuff over an over again, theres only so many times ya can hear the garlic bread an cheesecake gags before it leaves you screaming running outta the room. My vote would be for either Toby Foster or Jimmy Carol, they are hilarious both live an on the radio. Hecate 18-12-2005, 23:51 Another vote for Bill Hicks. He was a god of stand up. punk 19-12-2005, 00:16 Yet another vote for the late great Bill Hicks, I never knew so many people liked him! Bill Hicks classic: "I was doing a show in Fife, Alabama last year. After the show I went to a Waffle House. I'm not proud of it, I was hungry. And I'm alone, I'm eating and I'm reading a book, right? Waitress walks over to me: <smack smack smack smack> "Hey, whatchoo readin' for?" Isn't that the weirdest ****ing question you've ever heard? Not what am I readING, but what am I reading for? Well, godammit, ya stumped me! Why do I read? Well... hmmm... I dunno... I guess I read for a lot of reasons, and the main one is so I don't end up being a ****ing waffle waitress." More at http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks Phanerothyme 19-12-2005, 00:56 Yet another Hicks quote - The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey – don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride ..." And we ... kill those people. Ha ha, "Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. Jesus murdered; Martin Luther King murdered; Malcolm X murdered; Gandhi murdered; John Lennon murdered; Reagan ... wounded. But it doesn't matter because: It's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. Thank you very much, you've been great. and "Actually, I'm against drugs being legalised, and this is why. Last weekend, my friend and I went into a farm, took some mushrooms, and we sat on a field, I looked up into the sky, and saw God, he told me that there is nothing to fear, that he loves every single creature on this planet, and he showered gifts of forgiveness and love onto the earth, and I realised that there was nothing to fear, and I loved everything...Now, if that isn't a bad thing for this country, I don't know what is. How can we continue to make weapons if we love everything?" noseyrosie 19-12-2005, 01:20 Four for Bernard Manning? Blimey. I vote for Bill Bailey ALL THE WAY!!! Closely followed by the likes of David Cross, Doug Stanhope, and Daniel Kitson. I like my standup comedy inciteful and close to the bone. I can't stand Peter Kay AND I'm a Northerner (wow!). I recommend any of the above to Hicks' fans. Cross and Stanhope are about as close as you can get to the spirit of Hicks in any modern standups without being useless imitators. Both have their own distinct styles and are great in their own right. Kitson is just the best British standup period. quas muddycoffee 24-12-2005, 15:54 I've never seen ethier of them but Ross Noble and Johnny Vegas have me in stitches when they are on the radio. They find it almost impossible to not be funny. I used to think Chubby Brown was funny when I was a kid at school but I went to see him at the city hall about 17 years ago and didn't laugh once. I had heard all the jokes before. Also I recently saw Jimmy [? can't remember his surname] the bloke from radio sheffield at a party in a pub and I was disgusted. His whole act was just mocking other people. He was extremely racist and he used the most disgusting bad language onfront of some little girls who were present. sTaGeWaLkEr 24-12-2005, 17:15 Strangely drawn towards Jimmy Carr.... Internetowl 24-12-2005, 18:38 Dave Allen - rest in peace EdnaKrabappe 29-12-2005, 13:45 Can't believe no one has mentioned Frank Skinner?! Yeah the stuff he does on the tv is suspect sometimes (lets forget the taxi driver thingy) but live, he is hilarious and he deals with hecklers aptly. The sofa stuff can't be funny off the cuff all the time. Depends what you determine stand up comedy. Is it the guy at Takapuna or Last laugh who is dealing with a heckler or someone on stage at Sheffield Arena who has a prompt guy if things go wrong? Prerehearsed and practiced stuff will always be funny, i love Steve Coogan (when will he tour again?) but I know it's been done over and over again before i see it so i expect it to be. Found Victoria Wood hilarious when i was younger, but now she talks about hormone replacement therapy which is not pertinent to me so no longer funny. Cardinal 29-12-2005, 14:19 Have seen both Peter Kay and Bill Bailey live, and they were especially the first time - less so the 2nd time when the 'act' had a certain sense of familiarity. There are so many top comedians out there, and many many different opinions. SpeedwayDan 30-12-2005, 13:22 there's too many really, its like music, you have your favourites, but its always hard to say who's the best, as they're all good at different things. my favourites are: eddie izzard and ross noble (these two are very similar) dylan moran peter kay jack dee (although he doesn't seem as funny as he was a few years ago) billy connoly bill bailey dave allen Johnnywarren 30-12-2005, 13:22 You have to remember we're talking about the best of all time here So Jimmy Carr, Jack Dee, Lee Evans, Peter Kay etc etc have no chance. An expert in timing, it's a real shame he will be remembered for his material, rather than the masterful way it's delivered. But he's no-one to blame but himself! And what's the point of having a poll entitled "Who is the greatest male standup comedian?" if you're not looking for the best of all time. Perhaps you're right. Pipine 30-12-2005, 14:14 Another vote for Bill Hicks from me.. no-one else has ever come close. I have never stopped wishing that he was around to comment on whats been happening in the world.. imagine what he would have had to say about Sept 11, Iraq, Bush etc... It was huge shame he died so young. 2nd in my list is Eddie Izzard... a bit patchy sometimes but when he's on form he's hilarious.. shoeshine 30-12-2005, 14:47 The greatest...beyond doubt....engages the audience in the comedy....clean jokes...entertains the kids...no smut...is known for keeping people entertained till he is dragged off the stage...........But not mentioned yet, I think............................... its.....KEN DODD kay_cee 30-12-2005, 15:21 Aawww come on!! Wheres 'Peter Kay'???????????????????? spyro2000 30-12-2005, 15:24 Originally posted by kay_cee Aawww come on!! Wheres 'Peter Kay'???????????????????? Hes been mentioned plenty of times. Nate 30-12-2005, 20:11 Ross Noble for being 100% spontaneous and most likely about 90% insane... and: Jimmy Carr for having gone further over "the line" than any other living being! Quicker wits than most! quas 01-01-2006, 16:05 Originally posted by HondaNate Jimmy Carr for having gone further over "the line" than any other living being! His shows are excellent value for money - LesMcQueen 11-01-2006, 16:16 Saw Daniel Kitson at the Lescar last night. Wow! I was blown away. Definitely my favourite stand-up at the moment. It's a pity there isn't any stuff to buy, or bootlegs to download.......or is there?..... ;) Fantomas 11-01-2006, 16:19 I was there too - he was superb. I've seen him 3 times in the last year, each time he's done well over 2 hours and hasn't repeated himself - impressive! I've got a couple of bootlegs - they're out there on the p2p networks if you look hard enough. venger 11-01-2006, 16:35 I saw Ross Noble about 18 months ago, I barely raised a smile :( Terrorist 12-01-2006, 16:47 Bill Hicks of course! A bit too razor sharp for some peoples sensibilities though! RIP the Messiah I'm 100% goatboy, Bah Bah! Looks like Hicks is the clear winner! News headline: A Young man on acid thought he could fly, he jumped of a building and died. What an idiot, you don't see birds lining up for the elevator to fly south, they take off from the ground. Other Shout outs go to Al Murray (Pub Landlord). Chris Rock. Richard Pryor. Hate: Jimmy Carr (His angle is that he's a southern kid who talks like a northerner would (no beating about the bush) but he does it with a posh accent, and thats it, very two dimensional). emma2686 13-01-2006, 17:42 1st Bill Bailey 2nd Dylan Moran (I'm a huge Black Books Fan BTW) 3rd Eddie Izzard riot187tns 14-01-2006, 14:40 Originally posted by mikeyspikey sorry none of the above so id have to go for--charlie williams!!! C'mon! caramac55 15-01-2006, 08:06 Have to agree that Ken Dodd was superb as a stand up comedian, but now (as has already been said, has to be Peter Kay zoboz111 17-01-2006, 06:05 I like Jimmy Carr and Peter Kay is top's. mark1971 17-01-2006, 13:19 The accolade must go to the comedian's comedian the late tommy cooper (pure class) sarah2213 17-01-2006, 14:55 i like lee evans - he really cracks me up! :D fozzybronze 17-01-2006, 20:58 OK...its taken a while to read thru the entire thread. Bill Hicks gets another vote here.... try surfing the web for the "Suck your own c**k" routine... "Girls, if men could.... you'd be here on your own tonight...................watching an empty stage" As for UK: Billy Connelly, follwoed by Eddie Izzard. Jimmy Carr's TV work is funny, but I haven't seen him in stand-up... so the jury is out. H.P 21-01-2006, 07:49 Bill Bailey.. he's just the best  used to like dave allen too venger 21-01-2006, 08:42 Originally posted by sarah2213 i like lee evans - he really cracks me up! :D He makes me want to labotomize myself.
