View Full Version : Gold Star for Sheffields Highway Dept for waste of money
Went over the top of East Bank Road tonight. Led to believe that they have resurfaced the road due to the sign that says 20MPH. If fact they have not levelled the pot holes, or cracks in the road. They have only papered over the cracks. From what I can make out is that they have washed over the road with a tarmac solution thrown some sort of grit over it that washed away with the rain.
They do it every year, Desy. They've done it all over the place and presumably when Yorkshire Water have finished desecrating Handsworth/Retford Road (yet again), that will also get its annual (waste of money) treatment.
*Twinkle* 27-08-2005, 19:10 Brilliant first post!
I know what you mean about East Bank Rd... It's an absolute nightmare... All those stones get kicked up and hit people's paint work and windscreens... It's a joke
If you're gonna do a job.....
I've heard people in Sheffield going on about the roads since I moved here (in 1997) but never really thought much about it.
I started riding a scooter about 3 months ago, and man, some of them are terrible!
If you're in busy traffic you can't see the road ahead and some of the holes/cracks/bumps are just crazy.
At best it's fudging my wheels, at worst I've nearly come off twice and not even at a very high speed.
It needs sorting.

Oh yeh that top bit at the end/begining of the 3 lane section.
I was appaulled to see that new layer of now vanished grit they put as for once the road they've replaced was actually alright ! I know I drive on the damn thing every evneing after work (not in the morning, as the junction with Daresbury prevents you turning right onto East Bank = FOOLS)

It's called Surface Dressing. As the name suggests, the surface of the road is 'dressed' to help prevent a road from deteriorating when it begins to show signs of wear, and also helps prevent skidding.
Many roads are done in this way, as it is much cheaper and faster than entirely resurfacing the road (removing the top surface completely and re-laying it).
The chippings which are left on the road will then bed into the bitumin, and the rest should be swept off within a few days.
Fell over in one of many massive potholes in Sharrowvale Road and hurt myself quite badly so went to my GP who promptly recognised the problem. Interestingly the Council repaired it within 2 weeks. Perhaps more people should hurt themselves in Sheffield's countless potholes and the roads might get repaired more quickly.

Got to agree with Saxon they make a mess all over Sheffield. But I am afraid that this is the worst of the lot.
Sniperwookie I am afraid Sheffield councils idea of road standards have never been high. The dressing may be put on to stop further deteriation but when the roads have already deteriated to a standard that the average driver thinks is poor then the standard needs hiring. It is when they set the standard BS 5750 you could set your own standard it didn't matter how high or high low you had to maintain it. Sheffield council have maintained it and it is very very low.
It seems that exactly the same thing has been done on Redmires Road by Claremont Hospital.
New surface and chippings, but the road still has all the appalling humps and holes, crests and general unevenness that makes it VERY uncomfortable to drive along.
Compared to the work that was done lower down a few years ago this work is a complete waste of money.
If you think the roads in Sheffield are bad you should drive in Kent.
It's bluddy lucshury in s Yorks.
