View Full Version : Isn't it annoying how things end in 99p? Who are they trying to kid?
Don_Kiddick 27-08-2005, 10:26 £199.99 (bargain!)
£200? I'm not buying it - rip off! :loopy:
Is this just kidology? Do we really fall for it? Would we have bought it at a round figure anyhow?
It bugs me = wondered if anyone else got irritated by it?
banesmabes 27-08-2005, 10:35 It bugs me as well, but it must work on some people otherwise they surely wouldn't persist with it.
M&S have stopped it for some things, although not others. So I've noticed their clothes tend to be round figures (bought a top last week for exactly £22), but their food is still rounded down (bought a bottle of bubbly last night for £11.99).
Wasn't there talk a while back about phasing out 1 and 2 pence pieces because people just don't value them anymore? I assume if this happened we'd be swamped with products at £199.95!
£199.95!? I'll have two at that price!! :D
what would happen to the 99p shop though, would it have to resort to being just another £1 shop? :?
I heard somewhere that one of the reasons shops sell items for 99p etc is so that the staff will have to ring it through the till to give change, therefore reducing the chance for staff to pocket the pound coin......not too relavent with more expensive items though.
LordChaverly 27-08-2005, 10:52 Some of the items in the 99p shop are exactly the same as items in the £1 shop. As they are at opposite ends of town, I wonder if anyone walks between them in order to save a few pennies (or conversely to avoid having pennies in change?). We do discuss some profoundly important topics on this forum.

This is true. That was the original reason for prices ending in .99, but people soon figured out that it also made things seem much cheaper.
mojoworking 27-08-2005, 13:23 It’s called price rhetoric. An age-old marketing ploy.
We subconsciously think something is significantly cheaper if it's £99.99, than if it were £100.
99p
£1
i think it works on that scale
Retailers have found out they make more money and sell more if an items marked...Buy one get second one for a penny,
instead of the old..Buy one get second one free !

I read this article in yesterdays papers...very interesting read!!
I hate it when a huge advert says ALL stock now under £10 etc d when you look at the label it is £9.99!!!
:(
It is annoying actually, but only for the reason that you end up with loads of dirty copper coins cluttering your wallet. I think copper coins should be got rid of, along with 5ps for that matter as they are too small. Everything should be rounded to the nearest 10p.
Usually regular items on sale can be advertised as being in the 'SALE', items marked SPECIAL PURCHASE are not in the SALE but sounds like they are, usually crap things brought in as a fill in/

I suppose if people hate all these small bits of change they could always put them in a charity collection container [preferably an animal charity]
I used to work in a shop and virtually everything ended in 99p and somehow it did make the articles look like a bit more of a bargain. I did find it rather silly though marking something at £849.99 to me that is and always will be as near to £850 as makes no difference which to me is a lot!!

I nomally do when I get too much of it. Either that or change it in the till when I'm at work.
pattricia 27-08-2005, 21:36 Yes, I hate everything ending in 99p.I always subconciously round it straight up to the next figure. And they always say " ONLY" 29:99 What does ONLY mean. Maybe we should bring out a special 99p coin,as so many things cost that now. Then we can smirk and hand our 99p coin over, and not be bothered with all that loose copper.
