View Full Version : Owls vs Blades the Thread
canadablade 10-04-2010, 16:15 Well this is it.
Will the Blades do the DOUBLE and be eating Jelly and Ice cream as we help send the owls down or will the owls win and save their trotters ?
Or will it be a dour draw and not help the owls at all.
On current form i am thinking a 0-0 draw but it is a derby match so who knows.
NERVY-OWL 10-04-2010, 16:22 if wednesday do get any points out of it i'm guessing dour 0-0

you obviously haven't seen us much then if you think we have, both teams might aswell bypass the midfield but in wednesdays case maybe they should bypass the strikers aswell:(

not knowing who you support, your post makes no sense, i'll assume your a united supporter as it seems to be thier credo to use the names pigs/ pink chums or basically every name under the sun except swfc.

Oh yeah good old holier than thou wednesdayites never call Blades owt like Blunts etc
Even heard an irate wednesday caller calling us Blunts on P or G tonight before he was so rudely cut off.
jaystarchic 10-04-2010, 20:58 well wat a game next week-end.i ask will it be a fixed game so the owls win which will keep them in the league.as i am neutral supporter.

Must admit I called em Blunts at one time, then my age reached double figures.
Billy Casper 11-04-2010, 09:47 2 poor teams, Wednesday slightly worse than Blades but what with us needing a win and Uniteds naff away form i can see this game being an absolute footballing spectical...for all the wrong reasons :hihi:
CorkerSWFC 11-04-2010, 09:51 It will be nervous for us Wednesdayites thats for sure, I'm not sure i can remember a derby match which takes such significance.
Its a dangerous game for us because we have to put up with all the pressure on us aswell as try to perform, something we have not been doing.
We were terrible in some parts at QPR and we could easily be down already when you look at the season as a whole, were lucky we still have a chance to save ourselves from this disastrous season.
Whatever the result it wont be the final nail in the coffin but it might leave Cardiff and Palace with an easy tack to hammer in over the last 2 games
We still just need to match or better Palaces next 2 results and then its all to play for in the last game. Maybe a slight advantage playing on the Sunday if results have gone in our favour on Saturday but Irvine has definitely got to get the team up for this one from the off.
Que sera sera.....
CorkerSWFC 11-04-2010, 10:19 Im sure my fellow Owls will remember what we did to Cardiff in the last game of last season, they will be wanting revenge on us thats for sure.

Was just going to post that...You will know how the other relegation threatened teams have gone on on saturday so there should be extra incentive to beat us if there wasn't enough already.
All Blades have to play for is another Sheffield DOUBLE and we've done that so many times it gets boring ;)

canadablade 11-04-2010, 14:07 cup final time for blades
You had 4 Cup finals left and have lost one of them already.
3 to go --- Twitchy bottom time :D
P or G was quite good yesterday if you are a Blade, funny how most owls dont think you have a chance of stopping up :hihi::hihi::hihi:

no they prob dont, going on the 43 games we've played so far dont really think anyone would say we'd deffo stay up
Too true
We've had barely a handful of decent performances this season, so its hard to see where we are going to get another 3 from
CorkerSWFC 11-04-2010, 17:52 I really do fear the worse me, obviously United won't want to do us any favours, Cardiff hate us after what we did to them in the final game of last season, and anyone could win between us and Palace.
Three points is essential from either the derby or the Cardiff away game.
NERVY-OWL 11-04-2010, 19:46 should be an interesting game win, lose or draw. if we get a holiday from the derbys for next season or so then i wont lose too much sleep over it, can get abit annoying sometimes. hopefully irwine wont play it safe though. united are nothin special and we need a win, if jj is on form then he should cause their defence a few worrys, just need the team to make any chances they get count
CorkerSWFC 11-04-2010, 19:58 In all fairness i watched United the other night against Newcastle and in all honesty they were pretty good in spells, they got hammered down the flanks though with Guiterez and Routledge, so a fit Johnson should pose a few problems against a weak looking pair of full backs.
United also had there chances and suffered from a bottler of a ref.

i'm not saying there a bad team, just that their no newcastle or west brom. varney and jj hopefully should give them plenty to think about. they have a couple of players that we need to watch, mainly cresswell and little i'd say but a few utd fans at work aren't expecting much from the team so we'll see. end of the day it's a derby and anything could happen

Yeah true m8, lets hope its the same ref who took charge when Kilgallon got sent off against us, we could do with a slice of luck like that.
We haven't been having the run of the green, but 46 games is more than enough to seperate the crap from the good.
alex3659 11-04-2010, 20:10 I expect we will help you escape the drop.
CorkerSWFC 11-04-2010, 20:19 I expect we will help you escape the drop.
I hope you do, Blackwell hasn't exactly been pulling the results out away from home so heres hoping Al.
scoobydotcom 11-04-2010, 21:09 I'm getting less confident by the day!!
Three draws may well be enough (as long as Palace lose their next two), and you're more than capable of grinding out three 0-0s.
Palace have Derby away next Saturday, then a tough last home game against WBA (if they're still fighting for the title, otherwise they may have the deckchairs out).
Certainly there's no excuse for the owls players not being fired up next Sunday with everything that's at stake, while there is nothing more than a double for us to end a mediocre season. Given a neutral and competent ref, it's got 0-0 all over it, two poor goalscoring sides...
The Manager 11-04-2010, 21:39 Fingers crossed owls will at least get a draw , and blades im sure will get at least one player with a red card ;)
scoobydotcom 12-04-2010, 12:18 I'd go for
Grant
Spurr
Beevers
Purse
Nolan
Tudgay
Potter
OConner
Varney
JJ
Esajas
sounds a bit odd but we need some creativity upfront and i think varney and tuggy work harder and are both more than capable of putting in a good performance on the wings... tuggy's not on goal scoring form as we knew so we'll not lose goals by putting him out there
defenders dont like playing against jj and esajas changed the game at the lane so might be worth a punt

Tuggy :hihi::hihi: Was getting bashed right left and centre on P or G after the Middlesborough match for his lack of effort and general not being bothered, he always seems to play well against us though, so maybe a chance to redeem himself

we will have connelly back though and he is a decent fullback. i just hope he plays Little, he is the best footballer at the club
come on wednesday, please win
Grappler 12-04-2010, 18:22 Irvine has been calling for "mental toughness" from his players in recent interviews in "The Star", and I think this game will show him, one way or another, what they have, or have not got. Sheffield Derby, in front of their home crowd, against a team who can just go out and enjoy the game, rather than being under pressure to get out of the bottom three under the glare of the home supporters.
I actually think a draw is a possibility and if Wednesday committ themselves to push forward, who knows what might happen?
If they act like shrinking violets then I expect Little to cause mayhem and Big Darius and Cresswell to make the most of it.
Rocklegend 12-04-2010, 19:50 In all fairness i watched United the other night against Newcastle and in all honesty they were pretty good in spells, they got hammered down the flanks though with Guiterez and Routledge, so a fit Johnson should pose a few problems against a weak looking pair of full backs.

Don't even know if he will play yet but he did a full 90 mins on Saturday without a prob so that will have done him some good.
eastbank 12-04-2010, 20:14 we deserved a point at boro and didn't get one....so we may scrape a win sunday....if palace lose saturday then i'd go for it sunday...and not be negative like qpr....
whatever the results i still think the palace game will decide it..
Earwiggo 13-04-2010, 16:55 Just a few thoughts.
Creswell has scored more goals on his own than Wednesday have over the last 3 months....... almost. Playing against his old club? Need I say more?
Tudgay. With a bit of luck, he'll be at Meadowhall or somewhere on Sunday, cause he might has well have been there every match day for the last 4 months. IF he does play, and he's bothered (some chance), then he can make a real difference. If Irvine feels like he HAS to play him, fGs please play him wide right out of the way, to allow some one who just might be interested to play up front. A one legged man trying, is better than a bloke who can't be r'sd.
NERVY-OWL 13-04-2010, 16:58 i just hope cresswell doesnt play his first ever good game at hillsborough on sun!!
thats a given, i'm expecting the first goal to be scored by him:hihi:
Earwiggo 13-04-2010, 17:03 It's coming to summat when fans are calling for Jeffers to be included!!
In fairness, the lad can play, but a goalscorer he's not (not for years anyway).
I would include Jeffers (in desperation) but not as a striker. I'd make him playmaker instead of Potter. He may get up there and stick one in, who knows?
Clarke and JJ are both doubtful (allegedly) and Sam Ellis could have put the muckers on any chance of a class display from Glen Little, after his 'roasting' the other day.
Earwiggo 13-04-2010, 17:50 The last time I felt so reticent about facing the Blades at home, Wednesday won 4-0.
It was a fairly big shock then in '79, a similar one is needed this time.
Mind you, we had strikers in 1979.
CorkerSWFC 13-04-2010, 21:51 Doesnt matter who they are if they cant be up for a sheffield derby then they shouldnt be playing for either club.
scoobydotcom 14-04-2010, 08:23 Jeffers can play 90min but ouldnt rule out a 20min cameo - scoreline pending
I'd play Jeffers in the middle but its such a big game for a gamble, saying that though we havn't looked like scoring goals all season.
Tudgay has gone downhill and Clarke isn't good enough but its a bit late now for change so its keep up this season and AI to start again next.

I think its going to be a close one with wednesday taking the lead in the 1st half and going in at half-time 1-0 up followed by a strong comeback in the second half by the blades with us scoring 2 quick goals in the 70th and 81st minutes to finish the game 2-1 victors!

Play jeffers up front and drop tudgay, should have happened weeks ago !!! Eveyone on jeffers back for not scoring , but what do you expect when he only comes on for last 10/15 mins. A fit jeffers is still a class act so give him a start ( what have we got to lose ) I had black hair last time tudgay scored .

Have things really changed that much at your place?.
As for Jeffers, I have never seen a mans own fans give a player as much stick as owls give him on here, practically praying for him to leave.
As for Tudgay, owls fans on here were terrified of him being sold shouting his praises.
Surely things haven't changed that much?.

i think he still tries but just can't get a goal at the minute. if i was picking the team i'd probably play him as a winger for the united game, maybe give jeffers a try up front but how people can say we should drop him from the team completely i don't know
CorkerSWFC 14-04-2010, 18:21 To be honest when i have seen Jeffers come on this season he has looked well off the pace, bench warming the amount of time he has been is bound take its toll on his ability to perform in professional matches be it the Championship or the Conference.

Yeah things have changed that much , Tudgay for my money isn,t half the player he was last season ( maybe the burnley interest influenced that ) but hes just going through the motions, his body language tells us that. As for jeffers give him a start and lets see if hes up for it , We have only scored 18 goals in the 20 matches since ai arrived, DESPERATE TIMES CALL FOR DESPERATE MEASURES
CorkerSWFC 14-04-2010, 18:45 The lack of goals is down to the defensive system (even at home) he has been playing.

I would put a bit of Tuggy's poor season down to Potter's lack of creativity from midfield, he's dropping deep all the time cos nothing comes out of the midfield
But they're all to blame for the poor season - with maybe Grant being the only exception

NERVY-OWL 17-04-2010, 11:09 im trying to be confident, its proving to be tricky!!
i think both sides are thinking the same, it's just theres alot more riding on it for us, wouldn't of been so bad if we had got something at the lane though:(
Panthera 17-04-2010, 11:55 I think the if the results go our way today, united will have a fight on thier hands tomorrow. If results dont go our way then it'll be 50/50 which team turns up for wednesday
Titanic99 17-04-2010, 11:58 I can see us having most of the play but not being able to turn it into goals and losing 1-0 to a late goal!
LADYBIRDS 17-04-2010, 12:20 Just a fun day out for us Blades, nowt to play for fans and players will be relaxed and that will work in our favour, 28,000 fans begging for the Owls to turn it on, may be to much pressure.
1-3 the Blades.
Panthera 17-04-2010, 12:25 do you think the blades team could be too relaxed?
If the players aren't up for this match, then they deserve to be relegated. They won't get contracts elsewhere unless they pull their fingers out.
I don't think United will take it lightly either....Blackwell will be desperate to get a double over Wednesday, especially with missing out on the play offs.
It's a derby match though, anything could happen.

Watford could lose 9-1 today and still have a better goal average than wednesday HAHAHAHA

not too sure yet. got kids staying over but can go out in morning whenever so should be able to meet up depending what your doing
Earwiggo 17-04-2010, 19:07 For it be any sort of a contest, Wednesday have got to score first.
If United score first, and Wednesday fight back to a positive position, I'll be amazed, but flippin ecstatic! :)
Earwiggo 17-04-2010, 19:10 I still reckon our nearest rivals for the drop are Watford.
I reckon they're on -13 goals, and we're on -19 so a nice 7-0 win over United will just do us nicely!
Assuming of course, we whup Palace in the last game.

He'll have enjoyed it because it feels more like a win to United and more like a loss to Wednesday. United have managed to keep Wednesday right in the thick of the relegation trouble. I must admit that I thought this was Wednesday's best chance of a win in the last three games, but you never know.

Outplayed 47% - 53% in your Cup final speaks volumes about how crap you are, i wont disagree....3rd from bottom got to win and bottle it says it all.
How you think you will do against Palace when the nerves are even worse than they were today for your players ?
You wont be there anyway so it wont matter to you :P

Titanic99 18-04-2010, 14:39 Just about a fair result today, if anyone shaded it it wasn't us.
I don't understand why Esajas wasn't tried for the last 20 minutes as a draw was about as useful as a defeat today.
Anyway it is looking bleak but at least we might win afew more games in league 1.
By all accounts?
I don't think so.
A draw was spot on unfortunately.

Happy enough with the point (certainly after having been behind), even Lee Bullen reckoned United at the very least shaded it.
At least it's in your own hands, if you go down you've no-one else to blame... Palace aren't exactly unbeatable, and Watford are still in real danger of pipping you both to League 1.

It's between us and Palace now, if we win both games we are up, if we draw at Cardiff and Palace win then we are down whatever happens.

That point might be critical - a win in your last two games might be enough to pass Watford now, regardless of how Palace do next week? Two draws probably not enough, with Watford's better GD and two point lead... 51 points is guaranteed safety now.
Must be a guaranteed home sellout for the Palace game (and surely live on tv too), unless you lose at Cardiff and the other two get a win next week. At least you'll get the chance to show the blades how to win these last-day ultimate battles that we always seem to lose (e.g. Wigan, Chelsea, numerous playoff finals!).
Well done to the blades players today, and Lee Williamson in particular - could easily have not been that bothered, but sounds like we gave it a good go at S6 for a change! :)

At least you've got the chance to put pressure on Palace, as they don't play until the Monday at home to WBA. You certainly can win at Cardiff, and seem to have a bit of a recent hoodoo over them, though they probably want revenge for the last day of last season!

Wow! Us being at home is 4 miles from where you live, and you didn't go.
What's up, too far to travel?
I was just reminding all Blades that Wednesday fans (unlike Blackwell) have not tried to blame anyone else. It's not the Wednesday way.
We know how bad Tudgay and Clarke are, and there lies the blame.
You know full well that Wednesday fans are just as fickle as United fans for blaming all sorts of things, particularly the ref, as well as their own players (e.g. your current scapegoat is Tudgay, for us Quinn) - but as it's not been as good a day as you'd hoped, we'll let all that slide :)
Just seen the goals on SSN, two well taken goals, and a poor miss by JJ at the end.
eyretile 18-04-2010, 15:15 THIS started the 'he didn't go' banter.
No I didn't go, and neither did you.

Oh and for the record YOU started the "he didnt go" banter
al_partridge 18-04-2010, 15:19 Apologies for breaking up the bickering between people who didn't go to the game, but I did and have to say I agree with the blades fans who were at the match and singing "that's why you're going down". Spot on, we've got no threat up front, a midfield who create nothing, and a manager who's priority even in must-win games is to defend.
A draw was a fair result on the day but given the importance of the game there were far too many SWFC players who just didn't look bothered today, as per usual. Unless there's a massive clearout we'll do nothing in League One either.

So earwiggo doesn't go as often as he would have in the past - doesn't make his opinion any less valid (or wrong!) than anyone else's really - most important incidents will be on tv at some point anyway, and often what fans at the ground think they saw at the time was less than accurate under the spotlight of the cameras :)

Honest opinion as usual from Mr P. I'm sure there are plenty of Palace and Watford fans who're saying very similar things about their own teams though, so don't give up hope just yet!

Gorra go.
Both Sheffield clubs are crap.
One's cheap and sh 'ite, and one cost a little bit more. but is still shi 'ite.
Better than having bobbar in my pants like most owls though innit mate :hihi::hihi::hihi:
often wonder how old you are cos out of all blades on here you are so childish with your constant name calling you make yourself seem about 6
scoobydotcom 18-04-2010, 15:41 I guess it was a deserved scoreline because both teams scored a goal (which is the most important bit) but Wednesday should have taken the 3 ...
Wednesday were better team first half and we deserved to go in 1-0 (lovely finish from Potter)
Think we should have been 2 up by the time United scored (lucky goal but it went in so not much you can say really)
Then United fans woke up and sung their first song of the game and I thought they were gonna push on but game and the atmosphere died after that, Wednesday having the best chances but never really creating much, Blades having a lot of possession in midfield but never looked dangerous really
United celebrated a draw like they'd won a cup final and Wednesday fans were gutted which tells you what happened on the pitch really
Also, I really didn't get the "We're sending you down" song but nevermind
Palace have got WBA i think next game so could still go down to the final day
Next stop Cardiff!

Only going on the RS broadcast, but from their account it came across United were the better/more dominant side until the JJ/Cresswell incident, and that while we were down to 10 men you were the better team, and scored against the run of play. The second half sounded more even, United deserving at least the point they got overall, though the owls wasted a very good chance in stoppage time.
United fans celebrated like they'd helped push the owls a little closer to relegation (just as i'm sure you would've the other way round), and apparently late in the game, the RS commentator said it was that quiet in the ground, you could hear a pin drop!

yeh was quiet near the end all over, leppings lane end was quiet for 93mins (apart from cheering ur goal) - united kept it in midfield for a bit of the second half
im going on what i saw not what i heard on RS thats my view on it anyway
off to the pub again now!!

United started off better than Wednesday, but towards the end of the first half Wednesday got into it and scored. I thought Wednesday were ok until United scored, then United seemed comfortable but without creating anything. Wednesday had two clear cut chances at the end to win it..but as usual, our strikers don't take their chances.
First half to the Owls, slightly better team and probably had the better chances
Second half to the Blades, as soon as they equalised they grew in confidence and passed the ball better. Wednesday seemed to give up with 30 minutes left and were more worried about losing the game than pushing on to win it.
Very poor quality from both sides in the final third of the pitch
Can't honestly see where the goals are going to come from to keep us up

The atmosphere in the home sections was superb until the last 10 mins. United fans only really got loud until the last ten mins.
Apart from O'Connor those players don't deserve anything. Wednesday fans turned out in force today and really got behind the team. Some of them do not deserve to play for us.

I'm sure the opinion will be different from those in the Leppings Lane end... just as at the Lane, the owls fans were virtually silent until they scored in the second half (apart from their greeting to Ward on the stretcher of course).

That's a fair point. Leppings Lane though usually can be heard from the Kop, cos that low roof keeps all the noise in.
I have to say I'm glad Wednesday and United fans didn't cause any trouble, well I didn't see any, apart from the one blade taken off the Kop. Both sets of fans outside were wearing colours with no trouble from what I saw...makes a change.
missymoo73 18-04-2010, 16:15 ok, game wise.
For the record, I don't Wednesday to go down next season, I for one enjoy the derby games.
Roll on next season, new players and fingers crossed a new Manager

I don't know if he was brave or stupid. He persisted on shouting at all the Wednesdayites as he was walked out. Glad the police got their first..otherwise some of the idiots would have had a field day. Apart from that though, I didn't see trouble anywhere.
NERVY-OWL 18-04-2010, 16:33 Blades sold out there allocation and some even went in the pigs ends.
Only 35,485 there in your World Cup stadia that holds 39,000 +
So no excuses from wednesdayites saying they couldnt get a ticket
the capacity wasn't 39k though:loopy: corner not used, not all seats on utd end were used. i barely saw any spare seats in the home end, saw more gaps on the away end.i'm guessing the actual capacity for the game was 36kish, so a near sell out, certainly less seats spare than there was in your home end earlier in the season;)
NERVY-OWL 18-04-2010, 16:46 it was a fair result in the end, strikers let us down but a good goal from potter anyway. just no invention really as most of the season but i don't think utd would of scored apart from the fluke goal, which is abit of a shame but thats how it goes sometimes:(
i didn't rreally hear much from the utd fans until the last 10 minutes, that seemed to be when the wednesday fans quietened down abit although i was sat right next to the band so not much chance of me hearing much anyway:hihi:
hurstyowl 18-04-2010, 16:48 JJ was dire today, no control what so ever just ran into the utd players every time he got the ball. purse just seemed to lump the ball up with no composure, but camara looked a very good player for utd, caused our defence a few problems when he came on
Plain Talker 18-04-2010, 16:50 Well, I've finally got back from the derby, via the Northern General.
I went with Paulblade as my assistant, to the derby match, and we missed pretty much everything after the united goal. as I ended u in the ambulance room, thanks to some cretin (supposed) united fan.
As we scored our goal, and somee pillock "celebrated", by letting the firework (signal flare?) off on our end, some cretin decided it would be fun to dive, 10 or 12 feet, off the upper tier in the away end, down onto the wheelchair-users' viewing area, knocking PB out of the way, and landing on my head, giving me whiplash, and needing a trip to the Nor Gen.
I'm not a happy bunny. I'm darn annoyed at missing the last 1/2 hour or so of the match (I'd been looking forward to the derby, all flaming season) and I'm damn fuming at the cretin who thought it clever to crowd-dive from the upper tier. FGS, he could have left me parylised! as it is, i've got a trapped nerve in my neck, affecting my left arm, a headache, and whiplash.

sorry to disapoint but the SYP PIGS....had a few blocks empty there was only 1,500 spare tickets so yet again the police spoit it...why not give you the wedge another 1,000 sold in our world cup stadium...so if truth be known the actual attendance could have been nearer 37,000

It was chokka in the lower tier, there were 2, possibly 3 half-rows cordoned off in front of the wheelchair spaces, which I presume was to prevent those standing from obstructing our view.

Student17 18-04-2010, 17:33 This has not been a good season all round for both clubs and whatever happens to wednesday, they both need to have a real shake up in my opinion.
Plain Talker 18-04-2010, 17:37 never said you did...but fellow blades launched them into bramall lane stand hitting two kids....
Wasn't it just two so-called Blades who did that cretinous and despicable act? and didn't they get punished? And the club, punished, too, by being forced to "up" security measures, and having to close down G and H blocks, on the south stand?
and hasn't the consensus, from all we Blades on here, to a "man", been that this was despicable and that we in no way endorse what the cretins did?

That was me, yes, the disabled supporter whom he landed on. I didn't see it coming, I was watching the goal, and all I know is, all of a sudden, "WHACK!" he lands on me, from somewhere above.
I'm in pain from the whiplash injury, and have a sore head, where I was hit, but yes, I'll live!
(all I could assume was that he'd either been pushed, or leapt over the front wall of the upper tier! whatever he did, he fetched me and PB a fair old whack!)
What a fantastic atmosphere from the Blades fans today! I was exhausted 15 mins after the game started - the fans were fantastic. Only heard the Wendies after they scored and then second half we just raised the roof......

You must have been at a different place to me then cause we didn't hear a dickiebird from the kop, for all the fans you had there it was crap singing.
I was pretty gutted from both sides vocals if I'm being totally honest, nothing like you see over Europe with even crowds of 10.000, embarrassing at times.

It didn't carry very well then, virtual silence for an hour until you scored, then a few chants followed by a cheer at the end as if you'd won the title instead of getting a draw thanks to a fluke goal against a terrible side.

Cheers for that Sheff.
The way I see it, if I go to see a film and it's crap, I don't go to see it a second time.
I've given Wednesday 3 'second times' and that's more than enough.
Both teams are crap.
I just hope Wednesday can stay up to keep the Sheffield status quo for next season.
If they go down they deserve it, due to 3 or 4 players not being bothered all season.
I blame the manager(s) for picking 'em.
Me being there or not, has not made one iota of difference to the lack of effort some 'stars' have shown.
Love is blind for people who want to continue watching that dross.
I have chosen not to.

yep, i was on the kop and barely heard the away end, well north aswell. i was bang next to the band though so didn't help. only heard the utd fans after they had scored. it's pointless arguing who was loudest anyway. if you are in a crowd of fans making alot of noise it's going to drown out any other supporters, especially the away end. certainly felt the kop was in good voice for most of the game though

True...The Kop was very loud though, cos it even made the band seem quiet from my seat and their noise normally dominates the Kop.
