View Full Version : How much to service a car?
susa41981 26-08-2005, 20:56 Hi
Can anyone give me any idea about how much a car service will cost. I have a 95 Fiesta and want to get it serviced before winter kicks in. How much is the norm and whats usually included.
Also can anyone recommend a decent place to get this done, needs to be around S5 area.
Thanks
Unfortunately there is no such thing as an average cost for a car service. A mechanic will be able to quote you an hourly rate and the quoted number of hours it should take to do the service you require, but that can vary from 1 to about 6 hours dependent on the service (minor, intermediate, major) and will be without the cost of parts, the cost of which also vary from service to service.
This is also dependent on whether there is anything unplanned wrong with the car. The service schedule may include 'check brake pads and disks' but doesn't include time or parts if the disks need changing (which incidentally means that you need both disks and all of your pads changed on your front wheels).
I have known a service cost £50 all in (a customer's car) and also one that cost £700 (unfortunately, my elderly SAAB). I hyperventilated after that one for a while, and that was at staff rates too!
I'm sorry that there is no standard answer, but for economy a Fiesta is a good bet. If it's a minor service and it's healthy, it shouldn't be too painful. Sorry too that I can't recomment anywhere, but the garage I used to work in was in Doncaster, and I now drive a dealer maintained Motability car.
kall_sheff 26-08-2005, 21:38 A1 garage on staniforth road , buy your own parts oil,oil flush ,plugs..(cost you 30£).10£ for service. I am not sure if its same charge for you.
UnkleBob 26-08-2005, 22:03 for a 95 fiesta i wouldn't want to pay a king's ransom! If you went to Partco on Broadfield rd, Heeley you'd expect to pay £40-£50 for oil, oil filter, spark plugs and an air filter, and if you can fit the above you'll save £££££s!
If you're hapy to let someone else have a go, i think you'd do well to give Highfield Motors a call, they're on Attercliffe and are the first people i call when i need a job doing, number is 0114 2441697.

I once had to pay £850 for a service to my elderly Saab. Even worse, I was subsequently told by another Saab garage that £700 worth of the job (a replacement manifold) was totally unecessary in my particular model. Still, I learned a lesson: never get a Saab serviced at Gordon Lamb!
Now, can anybody tell me where to get a Chevrolet dayvan serviced?
Imho a '95 fiesta should be driven into the ground. I'd only be considering changing the oil if it had done over 25K since the last change.
Its a nice feeling when a mass market cars tyres, disks, pads, clutch, exhaust all start to pack in at the same time so it can head to the scrappies where it belongs and you know you extracted all its life force for the minimum outlay of cash.

Dan,
No problem! I am part owner of a shop. Just bring your chevy on by any time you want. Although I would give you a great discount, I doubt that you would want to travel quite so far....:D
I have my 94 Fiesta serviced at "One Stop" at the bottom of Rockingham Street. It costs me £80 for a full service.
I use them for all my servicing and MOTs, a great bunch of guys that don't try to rip you off.

Damn! You got my hopes up then. If I'm ever near Chicago, and happen to have had the van shipped over with me, I'll take you up on your offer.

I'll second that post about One Stop - they even have the prices of services and most other routine jobs up on the wall in their office. If they find anything else that needs fixing they'll ring you for your go ahead and give you the cost.
I've been using them for about 7 years and absolutely no problems with them.
Their phone no. is 272 2211
