For me it's a toss up between John Wayne or Clint Eastwood.. Not that I ever saw any John Wayne movies, he was a bit before my time, and I tend not to watch all those old films they repeat every Bank Holiday weekend.

Has to be John Wayne.

El Dorado, The Sons of Katie Elder, True Grit, Chisum....

All great Sunday afternoon memories from being a kid.

Then there was The Searchers, The Cowboys.....

Another contender for the crown? "The hell there is...." :)

I'm torn between Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne here - but the Duke ultimately has to win as he IS the personification of Westerns.

Although the sentimental part of me would love to vote for Audie Murphy - both me and my sister really fancied him when we were kiddies! :D

costner is really a jack of all trades type, open range & wyatt earp are fairly accurate portrayals of western life.
however "The Duke" is always thought of as a cowboy, even though he made other genres of movies.
clint eastwood was invented by the western, nobody knew him until Rowdy yates appeared, actually just like Charles Bronson i think who started in a tv western.

"I though you was dead" Richard Boone
"Not Hardly" The Duke
Big Jake

Who's that old fella who always drove the 'chuck' wagon in the John Ford westerns? No teeth, tall hat, bow-legged and Kentucky accent.

He's got to be up there with the rest of them.

I vote for Clint over The Duke by a whisker. Both great actors when it comes to westerns

Thanks mikeyspikey:thumbsup:

Gabby Hayes. Now that's how I would imagine true cowboys to be. Wizzened, worn out, toothless, cantankerous and hornary.

Gabby gets my vote every time.

I would go for Eastwood overall, especially his wonderful portrayal of the enigmatic, 'man with no name' . I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Lee Van Cleef, who played the villainous 'Angel Eyes', sometime 'ally' and enemy of Eastwood's character in the 'Spaghetti Western' films. Van Cleef played the best 'baddie' ever, with his snake-like eyes, high cheekbones and sinister smile. He reminds me of a retired ex-Tax Inspector of my acquaintance.
