My company use Fastways for UK deliveries. They're quite good from a customer service and price perspective. I understand they keep costs down by franchising their rounds to self-employed drivers. So I'm guessing all the capital outlay and overheads (van, petrol etc) is the responsibility of the driver. We've had a couple of drivers who have done quite well out of the franchise and sold it on at a healthy profit 2 years down the line. But it really depends on the attitude of the driver. The ones it works for are more sales-orientated and will ask around nearby businesses and promote their services. Others who treat it like a job, and just do the work the main office gives them, start to look a bit hacked off after a few months!!!

my dad works for TNT and he wishes he could earn £12000 a year! Mind you after you put it all through the books you end up paying if you are clever enough about £100 in tax.. I used to earn about £33K yet my tax bill for a year was £438. Win :)

no i meant they wanted £12,000 off me
I use Fastways and recommed their services to my customers. They do offer a great cost effective next day service.
I can send anything up to 25kg or there abouts picked up for £2.95 and then locally delivered same day or next day for S postcodes. Can't beat it.
£325 for a pack of 50 red National tickets so each is £6.50
Good luck as it is hard work and the lads I have seen do it live in the nicest parts of the area.
