View Full Version : Broadband Speeds
ianbrownfan 08-04-2010, 11:43 I currently live in Walkley (1 door away from being Crookes) have Orange Broadband. Unfortunately I can't get over 1MB download speed and have looked at all providers and can't seem to get any faster. Is it possible I just live in an unlucky area?
illusion 08-04-2010, 11:57 ADSL is limited by the length and quality of your phone line so yes, it's possible you are unlucky and live really far from an exchange.
1Mb does seem quite low though, when I was on ADSL I managed 4 - 6Mb being 2.5km from the exchange.
crashmepleas 08-04-2010, 12:41 Yes 1Mb does seem quite low.. I wouldn't say the exchange is too far away either, odd. Do you know where your exchange is?
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/SLBH perhaps?
ianbrownfan 08-04-2010, 12:44 I think it's in Wadsley Bridge last time I checked. The Orange Broadband I'm on however does say "up to 8MB Broadband" so not sure if it's the line or what :(
Ivor&Mel 08-04-2010, 13:42 I'm a long way from my nearest exchange, and was told by Plusnet that I couldn't expect any faster than the 2200/443 download/upload speeds I was getting. And I believed them for 2 years... Last month, I decided to move to Andrews & Arnold, and since then I've been getting 4000+/800+ speeds... reliably... And for less money than I was paying Plusnet...
i live in walkley and i was on orange broadband for a while and i was getting really slow speeds too, sometimes less than 1mb, phoned orange up and they said thats all my line supports, then after a lot of arguing with them i ended my contract and gone with bt, now i enjoy speeds of around 3 mb
auto98uk 08-04-2010, 16:23 I can get a massive 512k on mine - found an exchange map, and we are as far away from an exchange as it is possible to be in sheffield city :(
To add to that, I am in charge of all the computers at work, we had 2 lines installed at the same time, one went one route to the exchange and would give us a 1meg connection, the other line is now running at 20! (8 at the time)
Im sure the website i found with the map had the name "tom" in the title, but i can't find it now...I'm sure someone on here has mentioned it before, so if it was you who knows it let me know!

If your exchange is Wadsley Bridge then you can subscribe to O2 which uses ADSL2. I was getting 4k with Plusnet but now get 1.4Mb with O2.
