Last year I was a member of the university gym - S10 - and it was very good, no joining fee, £20/month off peak, pretty much exactly what I was looking for. However, now they have no off-peak option unless I was to join for a whole year, plus I have a friend who wants to join, and now there is a £20 joining fee.

I've been looking around previous posts to see what people think about various gyms in Sheffield (of which there are a lot more than I realised!), and have emailed various places to ask about their membership options. However, I was wondering if someone may be able to recommend one from first hand experience.

I'm looking for something that's nearby the S10 area, or something that's easily walkable. I haven't got a car during term time, and what with tram prices etc being raised, I can't really afford to pay for that every other day. I'm looking for something that isn't that expensive, and a place with a nice atmosphere, with people who are not exclusively fitness fanatics. At the moment, Fitness Unlimited is looking fairly good - £19.99 off peak, there doesn't appear to be a joining fee, but the closest one is Ponds Forge, and while that is do-able, it is a little far...

At the moment, I'm thinking that my options are, I pay more for convenience (i.e. S10 gym), pay less but with a long walk (FU) or go without. As I'd rather not go without, but would like a nice in-between of S10 and FU, I was wondering if anyone knows of any places?

... I just remembered about cage, but can't seem to find any info on memberships on the internet... that would be a perfect in-between if the price was right! Anyone know anything about this?

Thank you :)

the cage is shut, closed a few months ago. Why your uni gym has added a joining fee is strange and annoying, this is something that should be raised through your Student Union as joining fees in most cases are a rip off and an excuse to get more money off you.

try the Hallamshire next to endcliffe park. They have a special sept - june student deal which is cool. The gym is basic but has everything you would need, plus you can play tennis and squash as well. For some memberships there is a joining fee, however I feel this is justified with the Hallamshire. the hallamshire is a sports club, and has lots of social activities, a members lounge/bar. By being a member, I can enter club comps, meet up with mates at the bar, or drop off my kit safely and securely in the changing rooms at go for a run in the park. With a joining fee, if you are to pay it you must be joining something other than the gym, some extra benefit you are getting.

I was thinking of joining the S10 gym but was told there was only one weight bench. Could anyone tell me what places are good for free weights round here: How many weight benches in each gym, which places get packed etc and what weight the free weights go up to.

Thanks in advance

Ian

Only one weight bench? S10 has the largest and most varied free weights set up of any gym I've tried so far!
