View Full Version : What do I do with this fish?
valentine 26-08-2005, 11:48 My Hubby has taken up fishing and last night he appeared home with 2 what we think are Perch, (but not sure).
Trouble he is really proud of his catch and is insisting I cook them for tea tonight, and I haven't got a clue what to do with it.
So if anyone out there has any tips or receipes I would be really grateful.
I do have a quiche in reserve in case it all goes horribly wrong.
Jillybabes 26-08-2005, 11:59 If I were you I would take it along to your local fishmongers (if you have one) and ask them to gut and de-bone it for you cos that job is just disgusting, I know I couldnt do it. Failing that if you arnt too squeamish you could look on the internet for how to de-gunk a fish.
I'd just treat them like trout.

The gutting is not that hard, but getting the scales of is a bugger.
Berberis 26-08-2005, 12:07 I hope you husband has permission to remove fish from where ever he is fishing. Not many places will let you do that these days!
valentine 26-08-2005, 12:18 Thanks Nick I will try the Delia Smith receipe after HUBBY has de gunked it, cos I am not touching fish guts. :nono: :gag:
Serapis, I don't know about permission I will check with him tonight, although after he has de gunked the fish, he may be looking for a new hobby
the_rudeboy 26-08-2005, 12:18 Someone once told me that they taste foul....very strong flavour apparently.
Baking them seems to be one of the favoured ways of cooking them
Two parrots on a perch.....one sez "can you smell fish?"

Genius!
My dad always told me that Perch are not edible, although that may have just been to discourage me from ever trying to take one home for my supper.
they are classed as coarse fish, not game fish, he should have returned them to the water after catching them

I was thinking something along those lines too, although couldn't find any info to back it up.
valentine 26-08-2005, 13:51 OMG I am married to a poacher :shakes:
I may just give them to the cat to get rid of the evidence

I may just give them to the cat to get rid of the evidence not a poacher if he has a licence, but it is unlawful to remove coarse fish, even to transfer them to another lake or river is against the law unless they are sold from a stock pond that meets the rules on fish transfer, its to stop polution and infection caused by putting deseased fish into other waters
As a rule, you're not meant to take Perch from the water.
They are fished for as a sport, not as a food.
steevie/d 26-08-2005, 17:50 if i was you i would have kept quiet about this stealing fish from the place from whare it was cought is totally illeagal and he should have had more sense and a pearch too the record for perch is only about 4 pound so you would have hardly got a meal out of them any way pearch are classed as fresh water fish and dont come under the same rules as trout he shuld be prosicuted for theft dont know about feeling proud its people like him what gets angling a bad name:rant:
evildrneil 26-08-2005, 18:02 They are definately eddible (see mrs beeton! (http://thefoody.com/mrsbfish/friedperch.html)) though not sure about legaly edible!
steevie/d 26-08-2005, 18:26 edible they may be but on no circumstaces should they be removed from from the place whare they were cought you only have to read the day ticket for the rules of the fishery ive been fishing for more years than i care to remember here is a short note taken from one of many sites regarding rules
Please: use barbless hooks; use a landing net; return all fish to the water quickly; use an unhooking mat if you have one; and use the litter bins. If watching others fishing remember that fish are easily put off by noise, vibration and seeing people on the bank, so avoid this. Many visitors will be fishing close in, please respect their fishing too. Do not use any bad language. Complete your catch card.
