Hi all, I have a nice problem with my other PC,
I cannot access any programs at all, there icons are not showing at all, but you can see files for what they are ie, .png or .jpg, I have explored the C drive to get access to system restore and can't, I have no search facilities and there is no open on any programs, I have found whilst exploring the drive a folder which I can't find on another PC, the folder is "Set Program Access and Defaults" something tells me this shouldn't be on the pc, I may be right I may not be, can anyone help and advise. If it is a case of deleting it is just delete, I don't want to cock up anymore. The irony of it is the previous problem I posted where I couldn't move folders etc has stopped, I can now move them all. So just this problem now.
Help!

Cheers

Set program access . . . . . is suppoed to be there.

Have you tried using safe mode ?

Is it Windows XP ?

Can you use internet to download and install a program ?

I haven't tried safe mode, so will try that, I can't get on the web at all as it won't let me access any programs. It is XP and has service pack 2 on it.

I will try and use safe mode and get back a soon as I can as this pc isn't where i am now.

Many Thanks

Noproblem, safe mode shoudl help you out, i thnk it smacks of spyware.

So get SpyBot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) and run it in safe mode, then in normal mode.

Try Adaware too, just to back up S&D.

If this all oesnt work, at lest in sfemode you can jump back to a restore point.

Good luck !

Hi I have managed to boot in safe mode, but still can't get access to programs, I have spyware including search and destroy, and because I can't open programs I cannot run spyware or antivirus. I ahve also looked at the Set Program access and can't hit advanced or find target, incase it is pointing to the wrong folder. What Folder should it point to? I am probably on the wrong track. It went funny after i had supposedly installed AOL updates, but something tells me it was Spyware waiting for the moment I went to install and pounced making me think it was from a trusted source.

The mind boggles

Time for a reinstall.

Should have done a backup and\or set a restore point.

I know this might sound silly, but is there more than account on your pc, yours (or someone else's) being the administrator, and the others being limited, or could you have signed into the XP 'Guest' account?

I can't get on to the internet with my XP Guest account....there seems to be something missing.

I also have a limited account on my pc, from which I have hidden everything that I'd rather someone using that account didn't have access.

If none of the above, have you tried opening another administrator account to see if you can get access to your programs that way?

Another thing, try right click on Start, Properties, Start Menu tab, then Customise, to see whether the relevant boxes are checked.

I'm probably way off beam with the above suggestions, but they are always worth checking out, I suppose.

Cheers for these suggestions I will get back to you.
The restore point would be great if I can get in, I wish it would have been great. The reinstall seems to be the only option, but will try the customise etc first.
