Ade65 05-04-2010, 23:42 Bruce Lee used it as the basis for his martial arts development...... Davemantis 06-04-2010, 15:12 wing chung isnt a sport SiSiSi 06-04-2010, 15:41 Didn't I say that? kered9 07-04-2010, 06:10 Wing Chun is among the best (depending on the teacher and student) but you need dedication. Is it self defence though? They hit pretty hard. Carcass 07-04-2010, 09:09 Bruce Lee used it as the basis for his martial arts development...... ...and then decided that JKD was a better idea. SiSiSi 07-04-2010, 13:28 Now I'm confused. What is JKD? redkat 07-04-2010, 13:43 they used to run wing chun classes at the church on bramall lane Ade65 07-04-2010, 14:11 I think the Chinese Community Centre on London Road still run classes. SiSiSi 07-04-2010, 19:29 Wing Chun is among the best (depending on the teacher and student) but you need dedication. Is it self defence though? They hit pretty hard. Please explain. Steve70 21-04-2010, 23:29 Does anyone rate it as a good method of self-defence (rather than sport)? Hmm You could say its not the style that is a good self defence method but the student and teacher ( how its taught and how the student trains) there are a few factors to consider when asking if a certain style is a good self defence method: Including students; age, weight, height , gender, how they train, mental attitude. example could be if a 6ft doorman( who often finds himself in the middle of fights due to the nature of his work) practices tai chi is it the tai chi that has improved his self defence skills or just the fact that he is a hard ba****d. Corn2 21-04-2010, 23:46 Now I'm confused. What is JKD? JKD is Jeet Kune Do, a fighting and philosophy system founded by Bruce Lee. kered9 22-04-2010, 04:51 Carcas - Beginning with one style then founding another does not mean that the beginning style was not as good as the new one, it is nothing more than a reflection of what Bruce Lee thought was ideal for himself and his students... who were not chinese. Bruce Lee did not master Wing Chun before founding JKD. SiSiSi - I am hesitant to label any fighting system 'self defence' but if I had to Wing Chun would not be the first. Basically it obliterates the opponents attack and uses that space to land some hits that might be considered excessive force. I suppose it depends on how it is taught and how it is used, but there are plenty of martial arts more suited to self defence. Wing Chun will certainly keep you safer than many of the other options. SiSiSi 22-04-2010, 09:49 What do you mean when you say that 'WC would not be the first'? Obliterating someone sounds like pretty effective self-defence. Can you explain further please? ShotoKarate 22-04-2010, 10:44 What do you mean when you say that 'WC would not be the first'? Obliterating someone sounds like pretty effective self-defence. Can you explain further please? I think he was saying defence isn't the right word to describe what Wing Chung is effective at???? Offensive/excessive (by the word of the law) is his suggestion. SiSiSi 22-04-2010, 11:00 Which must make it a good method of self-defence. Am I right? ShotoKarate 22-04-2010, 11:44 Which must make it a good method of self-defence. Am I right? IMHO any system is a good form of self defence if you have the right attitude. I think the remark you questioned was suggesting that it is a good self offence .... I know it doesn't make sense ..... gfm1970 22-04-2010, 16:44 i once trained at a wing chun club out of curiosity,[ive dabbled in most fighting arts]& found it a straight to the point fast fighting style a good in close self defence system but it did like a lot of styles have downsides to it like they [or this club didnt] believe in or practise high kicks & in my experience if you dont practise high kicks how are you goin learn to block them. |
