Why cant test cricket be staged in Sheffield?
Don Valley stadium has staged cricket in the past with Yorkshire.
The stadium can hold 25.000 people whilst grounds that are used to hold test cricket like Headenley in Leeds can only hold 14.000 people.
Most people would say that Headenley in Leeds should have been bulldozed years ago.
Some people might say 'its just not cricket' staging matches in an athletics stadium but it would make a lot more money for the game holding it in a bigger more modern arena.
In my opinion Sheffield city council officials should be in contact with cricket officials at Lords to see if it is possible to bring one of next years tests to the city.

Laying the wicket is the first hurdle Gerry, and Don Valley is never going to rival Headingley, Old Trafford, Trent Bridge or Lords because they are purpose built as cricket grounds also Don Valley isn't a big enough ground for the cricket outfield.

Bramall Lane on the other hand could soon be knocked back into shape. ;)

Whats wrong with Abbeydale??!!
Seriously though, we can't even get Yorkshire to play in Sheffield, never mind England.

It all boils down to finance (as usual). Yorkshire would have to hire Abbeydale, if they ever played there. They have plumped so much money into Headingley that it would not make sense to use any other ground where they would not come out of it with a profit.

In addition, the advertising revenue and bar takings from any game at Abbeydale would not go back into the Yorkshire C.C.C. bank account. No, we have seen the last of 4 day county cricket in Sheffield. The only hope would be a twenty twenty match sometime in the future but don't put any money on it.
