View Full Version : Sharing a scanner over a Windows Network?

OK. Here's the deal..

We have a local network consisting of:

1 Internet facing PC configured as a gateway & local server - Win 98.
4 PCs (various Windows OS) connected to PC 1 via 5 port switch.

All the network functions perfectly.

My problem is, I need to share a scanner connected to PC 1 with all local users as I really don't want to use it on a single machine.

I know of only two ways to do this under Windows 98 which are:

1 - VNC (http://realvnc.com/index.html)
2 - Remote Scan (http://www.remote-scan.com/)

Route 1 is out of the question as the kids will be needing the use of the scannner.

Route 2 looks promising, which is what this post is really about.
I'm wondering if there's anyone on here that has experience of this software (before I part with my cash;)) ie. does it work? Or can point me in another direction?

BTW I've looked on the Mustek website as some scanners do allow network sharing (but not my model:().

I spent a while looking in to this for someone and found the software you mentioned to be the best solution, but they decided not to bother in the end. I can't really see the benefit myself, someone still has to put the document in the scanner. While they are there they might as well stick the scanned image in a shared folder.

ps, did you manage to find that software pretty quickly? It took me ages to figure out how to do a search for network scanner software that wouldn't bring back a list of software that will scan your network!

I found it pretty easily TBH.

Simply googled for "share a scanner over a network" and a link was given to it on the forum of the second link (if that makes sense??).

Cheers Joel. The SANE drivers for windows only allow it (Windows) to access a remote scanner, not actually share it under Win, and I really don't want to have to install Linux/BSD etc onto the machine as it would (more probably) confuse the kids:(.

Looks like I may have to "bite the bullet" and buy RemoteScan above..

Remote scan does work fine ocne ou have it set up, but i soon uninstalled it.

I got sick of running up and down stairs. So i just scan upstars from now on :)

You can buy a new scanner for less anyway, have one on each PC

This is not an issue for us (the entire LAN is on one level, and all are relativly close to each other):).
