I don't like Star Trek.

I don't understand it very well. All these funny hand signals etc. So is Dr Who for the thickies amongst us?

Where did this rumour that they don't get on come from? Looking at SFX magazine, the editorial team and writers there seem to like both, as do most sci-fi fans.

I'm not going to vote as I like them both. Saying that though I can and do critisise them both at times. Doctor Who went rapidly downhill with Tom Baker and the following doctors although the latest series has kept me glued to the television. Star Trek has minor problems as well, two that I remember off the top of my head are Kahn never met Chekov in the TV series so how did he know him in the film and in the latest series they made a big gaff with the Defiant in the mirror universe.
I suppose I'm a bit more of a Star Trek fan simply because i know more about the series.

I cannot vote either as I like both, I am yet to find anyone who doesnt like one or the other, I know it happens with football teams.

I once got hammered in Bath and ended up back at a flat shared between the editor and a writer of SFX. They had a HUGE fight about which was best...it nearly ended in blows.

I reckon a lot of people who like dr who would have slated it before the new series came on tv. I like all the eras for different reasons, even, shock, horror, Colin Baker's.

I've never been into Star Treck.

Dang!
When I read the thread title I was expecting to see a "diary dates & events" type thread giving details of a mass brawl in Norfolk park between 2 armies of bespectacled virgins, smelling of biactol & clearasil!

:D

What a let down. :hihi:

Which side was Dave Golder on? He always struck me as a trekkie (from his spoiler zone reviews), but has been raving about Who for the past year now.

Wallbuilder - What was the error with the Defiant? I was under the impression that it arrived in the Mirror Universe after events in TOS Tholian Web episode saw it vanish. Also, the Chekov thing was covered in an interview back when the film was released when the idea that Chekov was on the ship, but was a minor crewman at the time - hence Kahn knew him.

i heard the rumour on the hallam fm show nick@night, hausted by nick margerisson. he favours doctor who and he once said on a show that he was in a dr who fan club and the star tek club stole their projector, this sparked a rivalry.

It sounds like something made up by the sensationalist media in the hope of getting a silly season story out of it.

It reminds me of the great Oasis versus Blur non-debate of '94.

I've never bothered to look up Chekov's Star Fleet record and so can't comment on whether he was a crewman on the Enterprise when Kahn tried to take it over or not, I'll get back to you on that.
The problem with the Defiant is this,it ends up in the past in the mirror universe in the time of Archers Enterprise. However when Kirk ends up in the mirror univers 100 year or so after Archer the Enterprise in the mirror universe is just like the one in our universe.
Are you following this?
So if the mirror universe had had 100 years to look at and examine the Defiant surely they'd of made some big leaps in technology and so the two Enterprises wouldn't of been the same.
I know it's only a minor point but it does bug me.

I think that is the least of the things that can bug you about Star Trek. Watching it bugs me enough...

Having said that, when i've been forced to watch the odd episode one thing really got on my nerves. On voyager the ship escapes a blak hole through a 'crack' in the event horizon.

The Event Horizon isn't a sodding wall, it is the point at which light and space bend back in on themselves, meaning once you're past an Even horizon, you could try and turn around and go through but you'd just end up curving round and facing the centre, despite walking in a straight line in all conventional physics terms. The idea of a crack in this is simply as ludicrous as you can get.

At least Dr. Who never tried to say it was theoretically credible, Star Trek seems to give off this aura of 'we could do this if we all got along'

Wilf

I understand your frustration. A quick check of the biog for Chekov in the Official Fact Files (yup...as a true geek I collected the lot) reveals he would have been on the ship during season 1, just not as bridge crew.

With the Defiant problem, yeah...I guess it kind of makes sense that the technology should have advanced. I suppose you could assume that the tech was so far advanced that it took them ages to deciper half of it?!?! Look at it this way, if I went back in time with a plasma screen TV and gave it to people in 1901, what would they make of it, and how long would it take for them to suss it out? I know....a bit of a huge suspension of disbelief, but...well....I couldn't think of anything better.

Cheers for the answer anyway.

I've been having a look at Pavel A Chekov's career in Star Fleet and it does look as though he was a crew member on the Enterprise for approx four years before Kahn was found.
He did very well in his cadet training and so when he became an ensign Kirk wanted him as a navigator on the Enterprise.
Black holes and their workings?
Hmmmn!!!!! Hang on I'll get back to you.

Phew!!! I didn't realise that there was such hostilitiy towards Star Trek! Well I like no, love the whole concept, but yes sometimes the theiry of how they solve complex problems with inane quantum equations is sometimes questionable, the SFX is superb as in A year of Hell. Great double episode.
Dr Who, ....hated it from the beginning and still not tookeen on it now as it has a lot of ground to cover and keep the viewers interested.

I wait patiently for the new Star Trek series to return (whenever that will be) so on with the re-runs.

I like both.

But especially Star Trek, favourite series has to be the later seasons of DS9, followed by TNG (The Next Generation).
