View Full Version : Howard Street alterations
(rant alert)
The stretch of Howard Street from the Howard Pub to the Globe Pub must be the most expensive piece of road in Sheffield, or perhaps the country.
I know that it is all part of the re-development which includes the work at Midland station etc., but the work on the road has been on-going now for nearly a year and they still are no-where near finished. There must be a team of about 20 builders working there, and the work progresses at a snails pace.
What is even more infuriating is that every week they seem to have to dig part of it up that has already completed! I dread to think how much money has been spent on this.
(rant over)
But its nearly done? and it hasn't taken that long.
Captain_Scarlet 25-08-2005, 13:53 The streetlights they've installed are bent :loopy: :loopy: and you can't drive through it either

Taking a year to do such a small section of road???!!!
sniperwookie 25-08-2005, 14:23 It has been quite a bit less than a year, as the initial work in that area was the construction of the new bit on Hallam University which was started last June/July time (IIRC). They've not been working on the road and paths for the entire time.

And, if my memory serves me correctly, the work on the road started at virtually the same time as the new entrance to SHU.
sniperwookie 25-08-2005, 14:28 No, it was fenced off (the left hand road when looking downhill, and the car park etc), but only for storage of equipment and materials. They didn't start pulling the road up 'til hallam was finished.
monkeylove 25-08-2005, 15:04 the work started at the same time as the new hotel in-between the winter gardens & the town hall
so they've built a 400 room hotel in the same time its taken to pave a new road.
the difference being one is for the council & one is a private company
can you guess which is which?

Puts things into perspective doesn't it.

Up north where I used to live the council (stockton) decided to repave the pavement in my street, in a week they managed about 100m (bout 1/50 of the street) and the week after a private company turned up. They managed to do the entire street in 2 days. It just begs belief as to why the council can't just contract everything out.

it is a private company but the attitude is very different. they dont have the same pressure
they do everything really slow for 9 months then spend 16 hours a day on it in the last 6 weeks so they can get massive overtime pay
Talking of slow work, Gleeson are a private company and are currently in the progress of finishing off the development where i live.
When the by manage to turn up, i see three very fat builders lying sunbathing for a large part of the middle of the day. I know everyone has to have breaks, but they just take the p**s. They finished the housing in July and seemed very keen to get people in, now, they are going like snails.
I know its nothing to do with the station, but i dont think all private companies are fast fast fast!
So cheeky because they have got the houses sold and are happy to leave the drive way/entrance/security cameras etc for months and months. You'd think that they would just want to get it finished and move onto the next development.
Rant over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I take it you mean howard st, not howard road?
monkeylove 10-11-2005, 12:48 they're still no closer to getting it finished
surely, this has to be the most expensive stretch of road in sheffield
its an absolute joke
But look at the people that they have got working there, to me none of them seem to really know what they are doing. They dig up part of the road to put it back exactly the same the next day. I seriously think that I could have done it better and faster with 5 people.
1Man&hisBMW 10-11-2005, 13:49 I used to pass it every day. I often see one person digging or fixing some pipe with three others watching him.
Right now there is 12 people there, all stood in groups of 2, out of the 12 1 is kind of working (more like moving a bit of mud with a shovel) and the other 11 are stood talking. I think I need a career change, I would love to do that and get paid!
They've also had to do it slice by slice as there constantly needs to be a route for pedestrains to take. The work in earnest hasn't taken more than 10 months if my memory serves me right and that seems fair considering they've completely relaid the street.
