You can put a sand bath in though (with chinchilla sand). It'll give their coat a good clean and they love rolling and digging in it:thumbsup: I gave my last Syrian one of those trick-or-treat buckets that kids have a halloween... filled it with chinchilla sand and hid treats in the sand - she loved digging and rolling around in it, and it's good for their coat. gamer dude 02-04-2010, 16:24 No, definitely wouldn't bathe a hamsters. FallenAngel6 02-04-2010, 16:29 in any pet shop, i know firth park pet shop sells it Berkana 02-04-2010, 16:34 Most pet shops sell it - go for the chinchilla sand rather than chinchilla dust. Most pet shops will buy big sacks of it and bag it up in 1 or 2kg bags, which is usually a lot cheaper than buying the ones individually packaged by the manufacturers. I think the pet stall on the moor (open every day apart from thurs & sun) sells it in 1kg bags for about a £1. A tupperware box will do for putting it in - so long as it's big enough for hammy to roll about in :) gamer dude 02-04-2010, 16:46 How much is it? Berkana 02-04-2010, 16:54 A couple of quid at most if you buy the stuff the pet shops bag up. Or about £3-5 if you buy the ones manufacturers bag up. sarahjh25 02-04-2010, 16:59 you cant bath hamster cus they will get wet tail which which is diarrhea and even result in death ami_j 02-04-2010, 17:18 you cant bath hamster cus they will get wet tail which which is diarrhea and even result in death bathing them doesnt give them wet tail letting the hamster get scared or not drying it properly may make it ill though it depends why you want to bath it...i would only bathe a hamster if it got itself in a right old mess and then i would only clean it from under the front arms towards the rear with a bit of water then towel dry and make sure its kept warm. most cases it will clean its self though the only time ive had to bath a hammy is when it was one of my older ones and she was having trouble keeping herself as clean as she did sarahjh25 02-04-2010, 17:23 bathing them can distress them which can lead to wet tail ive had my hamster for 3 years now they dont need no cleaning or anything to help them stay clean they keep them selfs clean. only chinchillas have sand baths. Berkana 02-04-2010, 17:24 I'd go for a soft damp toothbrush if hammy is having trouble keeping clean and only actually bathing as a last resort :) Berkana 02-04-2010, 17:27 bathing them can distress them which can lead to wet tail ive had my hamster for 3 years now they dont need no cleaning or anything to help them stay clean they keep them selfs clean. only chinchillas have sand baths. Hamsters can have sand baths too. It's not necessary for Syrians, but most do enjoy it and it helps to keep their coats in good condition. Roborovski hamsters do need sand baths though. ami_j 02-04-2010, 17:31 bathing them can distress them which can lead to wet tail ive had my hamster for 3 years now they dont need no cleaning or anything to help them stay clean they keep them selfs clean. only chinchillas have sand baths. i know distress can give them wet tail but its not baths that cause it. i used to breed them and never had a syrian get wet tail from being bathed but they only got a little wash if necessary sarahjh25 02-04-2010, 17:47 ive just confirmed it on a website saying do not attempt to bath hamsters as the stress can trigger the illness to start again or become worse! it u have to clean ur hamster just use a cool wool or pad dampen it a little with warm water to wipe them but do not get them too wet sarahjh25 02-04-2010, 17:48 sorry ment a cotton wool or pad PrincessKate 02-04-2010, 17:50 Chinchilla sand sounds a good idea, bet they love it, my chinnies love rolling around in it, im sure a hamster would too :D Berkana 02-04-2010, 18:01 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdA8hD1YQEs&feature=related :) ami_j 02-04-2010, 18:15 ive just confirmed it on a website saying do not attempt to bath hamsters as the stress can trigger the illness to start again or become worse! it u have to clean ur hamster just use a cool wool or pad dampen it a little with warm water to wipe them but do not get them too wet well it never hurt any of mine , the point is not to stress them out and only do it if vital which in the few cases i bathed mine it was |
