'Evening all,

After a brief discussion on the subject with D2J at tonight's meet, we've come to wonder...
We all hear or us the saying 'donkeys years', but how long is a donkey's year ?

I don't think they have years any longer than ours, just they have a lot of them - 30 or so, about the same as a horse. Perhaps it's in relation to a dog's lifespan of about 10 years.

I'm pretty sure it's related to how long a piece of string is ;)

On average they will live longer than horses. Horses average 25 to 30 years while donkeys average 40 and have been known to live upto 60 years.

The term 'donkey's years' is actually a pun on 'donkey's ears'. Donkeys of course have long ears and therefore the analogy is with something that is very long (but indeterminate). It is not equivalent to a baker's dozen, which does have a specific meaning.

I dunno. Seems to me that a donkey and a human and an elephant and a fly - a year is 365 days (though not always ;))

A donkey can live to be anything it want - but a year is a year.

Donkeys years may actually refer to the fact they are pack animals and their life span in that regard may be either long or short depending upon the care taken of them.

Guess you would have to look at the origin of the species to figure anything out for sure.

Are we sure it does not mean Donkey Seers - those shamanistic asses who believe they can do more mysterious things than their brother and sister donkeys?

No. I doubt it, because "Time and tide wait for no man"!

But it'll wait all day for donkeys. Where do you think King Canute got the idea from?

When in actual fact Time does wait for every man. It is highly believed that without man there would be no time - that it is an invention by which we can measure the passage from one point to another without having to enter the realms of chaos.
