The house I'm currently living in has no smoke alarms, and I know in some areas of the country the Fire Brigade will come out, give you a fire safety assesment, and a talk and install free fire alarms.
Does the Sheffield Fire Service do that? And how do I get in touch with them? Any idea?

has contact details for the fire safety department.

Yes the fire service does provide this service. You can visit the above mentioned web site or go along to your local fire station who will advise you and arrange a home visit and will fit the alarms - usually 2 will be fitted free of charge

Because it saves lives, most fire brigades in the country do it.
Our landlord is meant to provide fire alarms by law, but he's pretty crap at stuff like that, he's a really good landlord but he's bad at remembering the small things. Therefore I'm loathe to go out and buy some myself, especially if a) we can the fire service to come out and give all my housemates a talking to about fire safety, some of them don't have a clue, and I'd love to know what other sort of safety precautions we could do with and b) I'd love to get something outta my taxes ^_^
Our landlord charged us a flaming (excuse pun) fortune for this piece of work

The law now states that if there's 6 or more people living in a rented house, the landlord has to provide smoke alarms. There are some in the house already, but surprise, surprise they don't work!
I think I'll pick up one cheap one until everybody else arrives, and then get the FSO to pop over for a chat with everybody about fire safety. Especially Ishani who doesn't even know the difference between the oven and the grill, that could result in disaster >_<

It's all down to a switch in Government policy from fire-fighting as it was to Community fire safety. Anyone can contact the fire service by phone, web-site or just call in at your local station, to organise a visit & inspection at your convenience at home for free advice & free smoke alarms fitting. The visit lasts for about 10-15 minutes at the most with no obligation other than a weekly test & battery check.

if you fit the criteria yes if not buy your own... for your own safety:clap:
And I forgot to mention all of the service charges they've added on for maintenance, upkeep, writing off and replacement etc. So much for comptetitive tendering. We're paying for their incompetence.
