View Full Version : Russell Howard-BadNews
gluedtopc 30-03-2010, 19:03 I recorded last weeks show and watched it the other night. I think he's funny on Mock the Week, but all his show seemed to consist of were video clips with him in between, shouting , a bit like a poor man's Harry Hiill, but having to swear to make himself sound funny. Shan't watch it again.

I already expressed my comments about this show in the Harry Hill thread.
It's pretty awful, in fact it's naff.
Russell swears, shouts, repeats himself and often had to resort to sexual related material to get a laugh.
And even though the show depicts Howard in front of an audience, If you listen carefully the laughter sounds like canned laughter that is added in.
I certainly won't be watching the next episode.

A new series on BBC 3.
Russell Howard is a skinny looking young chap who presents clips in front of an audience a cross between Charlie Brooker's News wipe and Harry Hill's TV Burp, although is not nearly as funny as either of the 2 aforememtioned.
Take a look, although I frankly wouldn't bother!

I think a lot of these "comedians" are rubbish-give me Tommy Cooper any time, I got one of his box sets for my 90th Birthday!
alchresearch 31-03-2010, 07:34 Look out for this on next week's show:

He's absolutely awful!.. not funny in the slightest and over-exagerrates everything to try and squeeze a laugh from the audience.
Glad it's not just me then :)
I thought it was dreadful, was thinking it would be funny, as he is on mock the week, but nope, wont be watching it again.
Past series were OK. Infact quite funny. I gave this another go for the new series and found it disappointing. I think it's one of those shows where you have to be rather drunk of a Friday night after the pub to find amusing :hihi:

You would have to be comatose to enjoy this unfunny idiot.

Each to their own. Can't say I enjoy the new show either. He's better on panel shows
Saw a few episodes of the last series, watchable if nothing else is on, funnier than harryhill but wouldn't watch it. He's ok on mock the week and some stand up when he's not repeating himself but this is a much lower standard - thought things/ratings must be getting a bit desperate when I saw that cringe worthy advert about it.
Look out for this on next week's show:

Has he picked up on the journalists name or should I be doing his job?

I don't think he's fantastic, but he does entertain at times. His only problem is that he is not as funny as he seems to think he is, and definitely doesn't have the wit to garner enough material for a 30 minute show each week.
At least (so far) this year he hasn't done that pointless part of the show where the wheel someone in and he has to guess who they are. All that managed to do is show how useless at real improv he really is (and highlight how staged Mock The Week really is).
I don't go out my way to watch him on TV, but don't switch off if he pops up.
Harry Hill, on the other hand, was funny...once....way back in the early 90s, sometime before the badger parade. By "once" I really do mean "ONCE".
AJ sheffield 31-03-2010, 21:52 Howard is about as funny as having an ovary grafted on, then trapping it in a zip.
Yet more dross on telly, will not be watching that again!

haha, well spotted .... I'd imagine he will pick up on it!! :)
ralphy666 05-04-2010, 10:29 I love it, very funny
flamingjimmy 05-04-2010, 14:06 His show comes across to me as a left wing televised version of the daily mail.
Stupid, wrong a lot of the time, and rarely funny.
mathew87 05-04-2010, 15:51 i actually quite like russell howard's good news and mock the week, i was in the audience on the christmas special and am going to the recording tomorrow too, and i can tell you, the laughing is all real, no canned, even russell laughs at himself when nobody else laughs, and if its not funny, then russells laugh just makes everyone laugh , I already expressed my comments about this show in the Harry Hill thread.

HAHAHAHA , well said mate, i love harry hill and russell howard, i think this is a place for the men and women with midlife depression who have no sense of humour if you dont like at least one of em, :hihi:
The fact that Russell laughs at himself is one of the things I love about him!
Especially with that gormy look he's got about him!
Hehehehe! I watched a night of episodes of Mock The Week on (Dave) on Friday night and the show wouldn't be NEARLY as funny without Russell and Frankie Boyle, (now gone?) But I haven't seen any episodes without him in yet, but all is saved if Howard stays!!! :D
(By the way, whoever books that awful Lucy Porter for the show???!!!! Dear God! She is so unfunny, she makes me cringe with embarrassment!!!! :o )
BasilRathbon 06-04-2010, 11:39 The thread title pretty much sums Russell Howard up.

exactly, when i was at the recording for good news, somone asked russell who is his funniest comedian , and his answer was frankie boyle, some of frankies jokes on mock the week , has offended allot of people with his diana, richard hammond and heath ledger (whats that joker? you'll be back? somehow i dont think you will be) jokes , but thats what makes him one of the best comedians on mock the week.
and russell howard is reading his jokes from a screen which are all pre prepared scripts , he has to read them for the purpous of the shows recording. and some people are saying he resorts to swearing to get a laugh, well what do you expect? you think roy chubby brown would be as succesful still doing clean jokes??? swearing makes people laugh, its a fact. and just a handful of people are here moaning about how bad it is , while russell is becoming a well known good comedian. :loopy:
Kingmaker2 06-04-2010, 20:11 [B] and i can tell you, the laughing is all real, no canned,
I am not disputing that the performance is done with a genuine audience who genuinely laugh, however when watching the show on TV it sounds very much like canned laughter has been edited in.
I know I'm not alone in thinking this as other comments on other forums also suggest that canned laughter is edited into the show.
Kingmaker2 06-04-2010, 20:37 and some people are saying he resorts to swearing to get a laugh, [B]well what do you expect? you think roy chubby brown would be as succesful still doing clean jokes??? swearing makes people laugh, its a fact. and just a handful of people are here moaning about how bad it is , while russell is becoming a well known good comedian. :loopy:
But the point is the better comedians don't have to swear to get a laugh.
Just as the better actors/scripts don't require use of expletives to get their intentions or emotions across to translate on screen.
Swearing is generally crude and unnecessary and certainly light entertainment could do without it.
flamingjimmy 07-04-2010, 02:32 Swearing is awesome, and funny.
It's all well and good to say 'but the best comedians make you laugh without swearing' but that's just silly. You might as well say 'but the best comedians will make you laugh without visual gags'. Sure it would be harder to be a comedian if you couldn't do a certain type of joke because you'd be restricted but that doesn't mean that it isn't funny.
Kingmaker2 07-04-2010, 16:10 Swearing is awesome, and funny.
Yeah for those like you flaming, nuff said:rolleyes:
