Seeing the other thread about the Nelson & Wappentake brought back memories of Rebels night club. Do you remember it, around 1982 or 3?

I'm sure a lot of the regulars on the forum will know about this site now but here is the link again for newbies

http://www.rocknroll.f9.co.uk/pubs/rebels.html

Lots of plans and info on the place and a seperate section Rock Reunited with loads of pics of some of the customerrs.
Are you to be seen anywhere i wonder?
The White Lion had a brilliant juke box and if you were a regular in there in the early 80's we probably know one another by sight if not by name.

Hi Wallbuilder,

Thanks for directing me to that website. Sadly I'm not on any of the pics, but I recognise one or two people I'm sure!

Doesn't it look so dated??!!

I recognise the DJ

Dated?????
How dare you!!!
The denim and leather look is timeless, or at least that's my excuse for not buying a new wardrobe.
If you go in the White Lion you can still see some of the old crowd lurking and nowadays 'creaking' in the shadows.
The pics do seem to cause a certain amount of amusement and a great many nostalgic sighs.

Tee hee wallbuilder,

Lurking in the shadows at the White Lion, huh?

Has the White Lion changed? I think I last went there circa 1982. Remember it always had All along the watchtower playing on the juke box and also Band of Gold.

We spent a lot of time in there...

PS have sent some of my pix to the Rebels website. Look out for them.

.

The White Lion of old is remembered fondly by a lot of older rockers as it was one of the few pubs to be packed on a sunday night with wall to wall denim and leather. The juke box had some real classics on it although people putting Janis Joplin on were regarded as bizarre, [me]
When a new landlord took over about mid 80's he ruined the place by taking the juke box out and having the toilets redone so we lost all the funny graffiti in the blokes, you often went in there for a wee and ended up spending five minutes just reading. Tetley's managed to get their hands on the back room as well and so it got nicely carpeted and the tatty furnishing was re-upholstered and they even put a bit of stained wood in and stained glass by the bar. I don't think the place has ever fully recovered although some of the oldies have returned but I often wonder where all the others disappeared to.

The White Lion is at heeley just up from Ponsfords

Oh how I wish I could go back to Rebels for one night only. I used to go late 80's. We'd always start off at the Yorkshireman's, then down to the Wap and hide as we were under age and Olga might throw us out! Then we'd stagger down to Rebs at 11 ish and dance the night away, Les usually being the DJ and the toilet floor usually swimming with water!

We used to go on Mondays and Saturdays, and of course to the rock night at Roxys which was once a month if I remember right.

We also used to go to the Wap on a saturday afternoon before climbing aboard the bus back to Stocksbridge and falling asleep all the way home.

The Penthouse has been mentioned on the forum before and my memory of the loo's was the dark doorway leading into a pitch black room so you couldn't see what you were paddling in or at times if you were even aiming in the right direction.

played a gig there age 16, in 1982. They didn't care how old you were - I used to be this heap on the floor by about 1 am on Thursday nights, which was Goth night in those days.

Yep, some songs are forever Rebels in my mind too:-
Round and Round - Ratt
Rescue Me - Y&T
Unchained - Van Halen
Runaway - Bon Jovi
Too Fast for Love - Motley Crue
Up Around the Bend - Hanoi Rocks
Barracuda - Heart
and many, many more

Found "Working for the Weekend" by Loverboy on a tape a few weeks ago and it all came flooding back. (Well the bits I remembered past the next morning anyway!)

My sister Jenny worked on the door in the Penthouse / Rebels back in the late 70's early 80's. I remember one of the DJ' was Larry and he was always sniffing after her. Until she paired up with Luger that is! Anyone remember those names / faces?
