My girlfriend and I are moving to Sheffield from Cardiff in September and would welcome any advice/ opinions on the best places to live.
We definitely want to be in the SW of Sheffield as one of us will be commuting to Buxton (HSL) each day and it sounds the 'nicest' area. From looking at previous threads and properties available in Sheffield, we are thinking of areas like Ranmoor, Broomhill, Crookes, Sharrow and possibly Nether Edge. We fall under 'suitable for professionals' bracket and are wondering whether to go for a terrace house etc. or for a flat in one of the numerous new developments that seem to be prevalent in Sheffield, some even having an onsite gym and swimming pool! Does anyone live in one of these?
At the moment we live in a top floor flat overlooking a recreation ground a few minutes walk away from trendy shops, coffee houses and restaurants. Ideally we would be looking for a similar location - does it exist in Sheffield? We would like to live in a reasonably quiet and safe area however, and think that somewhere like ecclesall road may not suit us?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Hi have pm'd you may be able to help with advice!

Ahhh the old S10 versus S11 question :)
There is no right answer, however S10 is a bit "safe" except for Broomhill which is a bit busy in term time (being polite).
Ranmoor is lovely but nowhere near anything walkable.
Most of S10 is a white middle class ghetto - this may or may not be your thing.
Nether Edge is handy for Eccy Road and better value.
Nowhere around this bit of town is more than a 4 quid taxi fare, although the buses can be a bit ropey unless youre not in a hurry.
Cheers - you may find S11 more to your taste.

That's a bit misleading to say the least. S10 and S11 in particular cover huge areas of the city. For example, Sharrow and Whirlow are both S11 but are worlds apart (and a good 3+ miles too). Both S10 and S11 start heading out from the city centre as being student zones and gradually become more suburban.
Edit - also, much of Nether Edge is actually S7 and it's not *that* handy for Ecclesall Road compared with Hunters Bar or Endcliffe. A taxi fare to, say, Lodge Moor or Whirlow would almost certainly be more than £4 from town.
If you lived overlooking the beautiful cardiff bay, i am sorry there are no such developments in sheffield! Though SW Sheffield has got a different kind of feel to it which is nice.
Definately anywhere near ecclesall road is vibrant and if you are a young professional couple as you said, then you might want something closer to this road.
Gleesons estate on the old netheredhge hospital site looks something your taste, from what you say, as it has all the facilities like pool etc though i personally dont know anyone who stays there at the moment.
As for S10 vs S11 , i found S10 quiter and more to the taste of people who have achieved their goals and "settled" in their peaceful quite life. As for S11 you see lots more younger people in the "climbing up the ladder and achieving things" phase.
On the other hand, my impression may be completely wrong and the replies to this post of mine by other members will prove it!

Did you just completely ignore my post? I'll repeat again - S10 and S11 are huge areas that take in a variety of places. Would you say Whirlow (S11) was full of young people "climbing up the ladder"?! Would you say Crookesmoor was full of people who have achieved their goals and are "settling down"? I don't think you can generalise so much about either postcode as they both cover the entire radius of the city. Both start off "vibrant" heading away from town towards more "suburban".
