Several times a day I get a 'mystery sound' coming from the laptop. I don't actually have to be doing anything for it to happen. There are no programs open other than pidgin and Seamonkey browser. The sound is three notes, each progressively higher in tone, lasting approx two seconds. Sometimes the notes play 'backwards'

I had Audacity recording but it didn't record the sound (so not coming through the sound card?)

Running Windows 7 Home Premiumon an Inspiron 1525

It's not a problem - just curious!

Could be anything..

a New email warning,
battery warning,
do you have msn messenger open? (or any others?)
could be something you have plugged in via usb?

there's a number of possibilities...

Hi Ghozer, I did consider that it might signify something like new email ... no new email arrives with the sound, battery is fine, nothing in USB - I do take your point, but nothing new seems to coincide with the sounds...

It's pidgin, that's the alert for when one of your buddies signs on or off (ascending tones is sign on, descending is sign off). Right click the pidgin taskbar icon & select mute sounds.
