The Pill often causes a bit of weight fluctuation unfortunately. Though not as much as pregnancy. ;)

If you're unhappy, go back and see about getting it changed. I tried about 7 pills in all trying to find the right one.

Good luck.

I don't think this is a type of contraceptive pill - am I right? Just the phrase "I had it fitted last year" leads me to believe it must be a coil or something similar.

Is that a coil? You shouldn't put on weight from a coil

Is mirena one of the hormone releasing coils? In which case it could make you put on weight in the same way as the pill.

I have a coil but its a non hormone releasing one (was sick of artificial hormones messing with my body) and I haven't noticed any weight change at all.

Here's a useful page on Mirena, how it works and the side effects:

http://www.medic8.com/healthguide/articles/mirenaiud.html

It does mention weight gain as an 'isolated' side effect.

Had a quick nose on the Mirena site :

www.mirena-us.com

and these are the common side effects - cant see anything about weight gain though !

Menstrual changes
Lower abdominal pain (cramps)
Acne or other skin problems
Back pain
Breast tenderness
Headache
Mood changes
Nausea
Ovarian cysts have been diagnosed in about 12% of Mirena users.
In most cases, these cysts disappeared spontaneously during 2 to 3 months' observation. Women who have, or have had, breast cancer should not use hormonal therapy.

This bit describes what Minera is :

Mirena® (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is a unique form of long-acting birth control that virtually eliminates the worry of unplanned pregnancy.
Small, T-shaped frame is made of soft, flexible plastic about the size of a quarter
Placed in your uterus by your healthcare provider during a routine office visit
Continuously releases a very small amount of levonorgestrel (a hormone commonly found in some birth control pills)
Prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years or until removed
