View Full Version : Toddler having an MRI under general anaesthetic - any experiences?
Birth-Peace 24-03-2010, 08:56 Hi, My little girl (she will be two in May) has been quite poorly for a long time and she wakes up screaming in agony from headaches two or three times a week and then can't function the following day.
She has an MRI scan booked for Tuesday and it will be done under general anaesthetic. Obviously this will be at the Children's. I was wondering if anyone else's little one has had this done and if they could tell me what will happen on the day and whether the results are immediate or not.
Many thanks x
missflirtuk 24-03-2010, 09:10 Sorry OK I can't help you but Roo woke yesterday holding both sides of her head and screaming. She hasn't done it today but she is made up with cold and has to have an inhaler so wonder if this is related. Why don't you try ringing someone at the Hospital and see if they can offer you any reassurance. Hope your little one is ok. x
SpeedDemon 24-03-2010, 09:16 My son had one last year but he was 10 so he was awake, watching a film. As far as i remember, the lady who did it said she could not see anything obvious on it but then we had to see the consultant again. Good luck Ollie, hope she's ok
BobbyBunny 24-03-2010, 15:03 Good luck, hope she's ok. Tegan has had about four MRI's under GA. Childrens are fab. She'll be fine, try not to worry. They normally give you a preliminary outcome, without much detail. If they find something, they'll say something along the lines of we found something but we'll need to consultant to check it out. If they don't they'll tell you they didn't see anything.
I have no experience of it, but just wanted to pass my best wishes onto you and hope all goes well on Tuesday.
Birth-Peace 24-03-2010, 18:19 Thank you. She has been ill since September but it has got alot worse in the last month.
honeyb35 24-03-2010, 21:41 Hey hun, Mattys had quite a few MRI's.
When they are ready for her, they will come and collect her for the GA. Sometimes you're allowed down with them until they are about to administer the GA, other times they will ask you to wait elsewhere. I'm not sure what they make the decision with, but I've done both.
If you go down, they will let you lay her on the bed, then give her a kiss, then you'll leave whilst the administer the GA, Mattys had it by a facemask, and I 'think' he's had something injected into a canula before.
Whilst you're waiting DO NOT sit on the ward as it will make it worse, believe me! Go down to the canteen for a cup of tea, or even to the hossie shop to buy her a 'big brave girl' pressie. If they need you they will get in touch with you, just let them know where you're going to be and they can phone down.
I cant remember how long they take, I'm sure its about an hour, but obviously depends on how many pictures they need to take.
When shes back in recovery, they will probably let you go and sit by her bed till she wakes up. Some kids do wake up crying and really upset, some have the shakes etc. Thats normal and just the effects of the GA wearing off.
Again, I cant remember quite how long it took for the results to come back, as they have to be assessed by a consultant. I think I've seen Mattys the following day, or within a few days, but obviously he was an in patient at the time and his consultant was there.
Have they said if she'll need to stay in overnight?
I hope none of this is scary, I've tried not to make it so! But I remember what it was like when medical staff were spouting various terms at me, and no one actually told me what it was like.
I'm sure it'll all go ok, and your princess will be fine. I'll be thinking of you.
rubydazzler 24-03-2010, 21:59 Scary stuff, don't know anything about it, just wanted to give you a bit of moral support! I hope it goes ok for both of you, and that you find there's nothing to find. I presume they've ruled out migraine?
Birth-Peace 25-03-2010, 15:21 Thanks HoneyB, thats really useful info. I'm so upset about it, shes so little. Ruby, migraines are definite possibilities as are cluster headaches but they have to rule the nasty stuff out first. She has had one seizure and one faint aswell, and just hasn't been herself for such a long time.
She has a chest infection at the moment and its reminding me how incredibly tough she is as it is hardly bothering her at all, which makes it all the more upsetting when she screams in pain at these headaches. She becomes almost like a feral kitten, doing anything she can to get away from any source of light.
mistyraven 25-03-2010, 17:56 Olliekitten sorry to hear your little one is not well.
My daughter had to have an investigation I was out of my mind with worry but the staff at the childrens hospital were fantastic.
I went for a walk round the park biting my nails I was.
She was up and around about four hours later.
Big hug to her and I wish her well.. Misty.
Birth-Peace 30-03-2010, 17:40 HI Guys, Just to let you know that we went for the MRI today and survived :)
We took her in at eight this morning and she played in the DayCare room for a few hours and then it was time to take her down. Daddy and I went down with her but only one of us was allowed into the room with her, I went in.
She was sat on my knee reading a book about a bus and some sheep :) whilst they put the canula in her hand (they had already put magic cream on her hand so she wouldn't feel it) the anaesthetist then gave her some drugs and she went to sleep. It was actually really shocking to me, which was ridiculous as that was clearly what was supposed to happen. But she went so limp and her eyes rolled and all of a sudden she looked so so tiny, my heart broke as they rushed her off.
I went back outside to Rich and cried into his shoulder alot then we toddled off to the cafe (very yummy sausage and egg sandwiches by the way) and stayed there for about 40 mins. We then made our way back to the DayCare ward, and waited just five mins before we were called down to recovery where our baby girl was still asleep but mildly stirring. I was quite shocked at the impact seeing her again (after only an hour) had on me, I couldn't stop touching her face and hands. She was wheeled back to the DayCare ward and I held her on my knee till she came round more. We had to wait till she had a drink and something to eat and then we were allowed home, so all in all not something I want to have to go through again but much better than I expected.
Thanks for all your support x
So glad it went well for you. Although it sounds like an awful experience to watch your child go though something like that. I hope the results are good news.
