View Full Version : I want to lose weight and get fit
Jillybabes 23-08-2005, 10:49 I am not massively overweight or anything but I could do with losing a few pounds. Two years ago I joined weightwatchers and lost over 2 stone but since suffering with anxiety I started to put the weight back on and am creeping back up to my original weight. I know weightwatchers works but having to pay £4.95 every week is a bit steep I think especially when you havent lost anything. I start the day thinking right this is the day Im going to eat healthily and do some exercise but it never happens, I just havent got the determination to start it. Any ideas anyone? I cant go jogging cos I have bad knees and asthma, I like walking but is this enough, and I wont join a gym because I know I will never go.
Swimming is supposed to be the best all-rounder for health and fitness.
b1u3grass 23-08-2005, 11:15 If you like walking, get a dog. Not a small dog, one that needs a few good walks a day.
Very good if motivation is required, the dog has lots! Great company and enthusiasm, they always want to know whats on the other side of the hill. :suspect:
Plus you'll start noticing whats going on around you, not just nature but people too. Get to meet new people and see strange things. :heyhey:

I swam every day for one year, sometimes twice a day on weekends..... I PUT WEIGHT ON ...didn't loose one bit.
i did it mainly for my arthritus which felt great while i was in the water, soon as i got out of the water my joints just stiffened right back up again, and stayed that way till my next swim.
just a waste of quite a lot of money .

You can get heavier and thinner at the same time, muscle weighs more than fat so you can get fitter and put on weight. You shouldn't rely on your weight as an indicator, you should go on your shape.
LordChaverly 23-08-2005, 13:00 Although you rule it out, I think you ought to reconsider joining a gym. I think this is likely to motivate you to get fit in three ways. Firstly, if you pay the joining fee and monthly subscription, you will want to get your money's worth. Secondly, seeing other people work out is a great motivator (much better than doing it on your own). Thirdly, gyms have lots of specialist equipment which will help you to tone up specific parts of your body.
Fourthly, gyms are full of single fit people to get off with.

Thats a good point too Nick, although in my experience people are so focused on their gym routines that very little socialising happens (or am I going to the wrong gym?)

You tend to get chatting in the sauna/spa/steam room I find, rather than on the treadmill where, like you said, people are concentrating on what they are doing.

When i ever go into the sauna, steamroom or spa, there is usually deadly uncomfortable silence.
If you live close enough to work, sell your car and walk everywhere. You'll soon lose weight.
lizzmobile 23-08-2005, 13:15 The walking advice is very good. I walked from Clapham junction to South Kensington in London every weekday for a year, and lost heaps (too much in fact). Get yourself a good walkman and some stomping toons, create a circuit for yourself wiht some up hills and downhills and you'll need new clothes within 3 months. Get music that starts at about 110 beats per minute (uyou can count this yourself) and work up to faster. Try and walk to the beat. Remeber to do acouple of leg and arm stretches after 10 minutes and when you have finished or you'll end up in agony. Also, get some arnica tablets in case you forget! take a bottle of water with you, don't eat before you exercise and don't talk to strangers in the park ;).
You can couple this with cuttin g down on the animal fat you eat, eat less processed food (cut it down even more), try to eat as much raw food as possible (fruit veg, sprouted seeds etc; not meat :loopy:), be mindful of every mouthful of food whilst you are eating and don't eat in front of the tv.
I used to teach aerobics so I know how it all works, and yes, muscle is heavier than fat.
Go on, off you go!
I am in exactly the same boat as you Jillybabes, & I do have a dog! I walk her every morning without fail and when I first got her joined WW and lost 3 stone. I joined a Gym and found it very boring; I've now put 1stone back on.
I think the thing with WW is I used to plan, then I could stick to it.
What part worked for you?

Unfortunately, I'm not allowed in the ladies' sauna/steam room at my gym.
My sister's lost 5.5 stone since christmas and has been accepted to have a tummy tuck operation on the NHS.
She just stopped eating.

Ah, our sauna/steam room and spa are mixed.
i have tried every diet in the world, unfortunately all at the same time (lol)
portion control & exercies are the two areas. with WW u always control your portion size, which i think is what lets everyone down afterwards.
i'm overweight and still yo-yo +or- a stone throughout the year, from where i'm at.
i cycle twice per week, play badminton competitively a minimum of twice per week, and take part in the best exercise in the world every day. it still dont shift it.

you've spotted me watching u then!!
Jillybabes 23-08-2005, 15:47 I already have a dog and do walk him, admittedly not far from where I live, I will have to start going further afield, although there are no parks where we live. Debk I didnt really plan my eating when on WW diet I just stuck to the points religiously and wrote everything down that I ate but this got really boring. I like the walking along with a walkman on, I have a walkman so I will try that one. Thanks for your suggestions folks, keep em coming.
intooblivion 23-08-2005, 16:53 The Cambridge Diet. It's wonderful completely takes food out of the equation. Many people will say it's a bad diet but it's always worked wonders for me to drop a few pounds quickly and contrary to some opinions it does stay off.
Magneteer 23-08-2005, 17:41 A lot of fat women who attend a weightwatchers near me, just don't seem to grasp the basics. They all park their cars as close to the entrance as they can and then go in and pay £5 for someone to tell them to not eat so much and to do some exercise. Surely, if they walked or even jogged down to WW, they may see some speedier results. Instead of taking their kids 200 yds to school in the car, why not walk. It's not rocket science. Walk as much as possible, cut out the chips, biscuits, crisps, pizza etc and the difference will soon become noticable.
Annoni_mouse 23-08-2005, 19:40 For me,the most success i ever had with weightloss was to limit the fat intake for every meal.I used to ration myself to no more than 10g of fat per meal dropping down to 5g's for the last few months. Its hard, but using this method(plus 45 minutes of exercise per night),I managed to drop from just under 18 stone down to below 12.
I think the main thing with any weightloss plan is to find a system you can stick to and which fits in with youre lifestyle-dont be tempted with the fad diets-they never work,in my experiance....
It sounds abit obvious, but why not buy something like an exercise bike for your home?
I have one and find it alot easier doing exercise in my house rather than in a gym in front of people. You can pick exercise bikes up now for probably under £100, and its just a one off payment and you have it for life. They are also good because I think most come with the calorie counter's so it tells you how many calories you have lost, and it makes you feel alot better!
I think it will help you feel healthier and I think that it is more important for now to concentrate on that, rather than thinking I need to loose weight. Once you feel better and healthier I think you will enjoy doing the exercise more and you might start seeing a difference!
Over the past 2 years ive been losing weight, its not just wanting to change in you life style, its getting the boredom factor out of you head too, the hardest thing i had to do is to accept that some of the changes will be really boring, like going to the gym alone - i tried to find a gym buddy no one wanted to go for the same reason as me, so i started alone, i looked at what i ate, and cut out all of the fat and sweet foods, fad diets-they never work, in my experiance - find out what other foods you do like, i bought a good recipe book for tips - a mate gave me some weight watches mags and i picked up a few tips there.. the biggest thing you have to do is...... to "want" to lose weight or just feel fitter if your still only 50/50 its a lost cause. But what ever you do, make sure it fits in the life style you live, that way it will turn out to be fun and not a chore.
I go to the gym 3 times a week and swim each time, i walk around 15 miles aweek, (fast walk) and have just started light jogging... when i look back at my life 2 years ago:gag: i used cruches to help me walk as i was so big... was it worth it i ask my self?:D
I did weight watches once, found it very hard, always hungery, end of the first week i wanted to eat the furniture in the house !
