View Full Version : Advice on areas near the M1
Me and my partner are moving to Sheffield later this year and wondered if anyone can recommend an area near the M1 to live (preferably near junction 30 or 31). Neither of us work in Sheffield and need to be near the M1 for commuting. I have looked at previous postings about Eckington, Aughton etc. but some are a bit old and some advise to move to South West sheffield - which isn't really something we want to do. Our general leanings are towards a village location that has a nice pub, a few shops and a bus service to sheffield. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
Are you planning to head south on the M1?
I'd look at Aston, Todwick, Barlborough, Renishaw, maybe the nice parts of Clowne.
And any other villages close to the ones i've mentioned. If you find out the postcode that will cover a reasonably large area, so just put that in on the property search engines.
My partner works near mexborough and I will commute South on the M1 once or twice a week.
We did the same as you, and wound up in Woodhouse ;)
Crystal Peaks 5 mins
Meadowhall 20 mins
Town 15 mins
Fields on our doorstep
Decent sized Co-op
Night bus
Train station (town 10 mins, m'hall 20)
Beighton is similar in it's villagey feel, but not too isolated ;)
Aston, Swallownest, Beighton, Woodhouse - all handy for the M1 with good links to Sheffield too.
Lived in Killamarsh for a few years and hated it. Happily been in Woodhouse for 6 years now.
The house prices this side of town are good value for money and the areas are on the up.
What sort of place are you looking for? There are some new builds at the moment going up in Beighton, Halfway and Renishaw. Halfway has excellent links for the tram and crystal peaks shopping centre.
Woodhouse has the advantage of a train station and plenty of buses as well as quite a nice village centre (though parts of it would benefit from a cash boost).
Aston/Swallownest has a few new estates, some are closer to the village centre than others, but it has a lovely village feel and some nice pubs too.
Todwick and Kiveton are the other side of the Motorway, Todwick is nice. Kiveton has some new builds - Strata I think and the old mining area is being re-developed (almost finished) into a country park similar to Rother Valley I believe. There's Wales too - next door to Kiveton. Kiveton has a railway station but is a bit further out from Sheffield than Woodhouse. Woodhouse is the second stop on the line from Sheffield, Kiveton Park the third I believe.

MosboroughWeb Here (http://www.aburke.freeuk.com/index.htm)
There are lots of options close to the M1. If you want semi rural (ie close to shops, good transport links, village pubs etc) then Marsh Lane and Ridgeway may be worth a look. Ridgeway rarely gets mentioned but you have the best of both worlds there. There are 5 pubs and there is a Somerfield and 4 take aways at Gleadless Townend/White Lane or through Marsh Lane at Eckington, there is a good co op. Crystal Peaks is also nearby. The M1 is within a 15 minute drive.
I have lived at Eckington and enjoyed my time there but the nearest tram is at Halfway whereas Ridgeway has a couple at Gleadless Townend.
I would consider renting in an area that you are considering living in. It can be an expensive mistake if you make the wrong choice for you. Main agents for areas accessible to the M1 from the side of the city that you are looking at can be found at Crystal Peaks Shopping centre. From memory these are Blundells, Haybrooks, Halifax and there is one other.
Happy hunting.

Ridgeway is very expensive. You would be looking at upwards of 400k. After saying that there are two properties at the top on High Lane that are up for rent at the mo.
Very Royston Vasey there though in a 'local' kind of way.
you can get smaller ones(3beds) for 200k easy if you can find them, usually on the estate opposite the pub.

There isn't an estate opposite the pub.
The school is opposite the Queens and the craft centre is opposite the Swan.
rdigeway arms on corner estate on left hand side runs round to garden centre - i thought it was part of ridgeway on that side of the road.

No Willman, they are all Sheffield wallers who like to try to impress by saying that they live in Ridgeway. They don't they live in Mosborough, like it or not :hihi:
Ridgeway Heights was just the fancy name given to the estate by the builders for marketing purposes.
Ridgeway doesn't start until you hit the 'Derbyshire' sign just after the other housing estate on the RHS (think its called Cam dale).
yep just tracked it down its actually called HighLane along the top of quarry lane i think.i remember seeing the signs as i drive to norton every week.
Thinking about it though there is a council estate at the top of Ridgeway which is gradually becoming a private estate under the right to buy scheme.
Properties sometimes come up for sale on there but even then the price is reflective of the area. They are also made of concrete which has the spalling problem and I know that some of the sales have had to be on a cash basis as mortgages couldn't be obtained.
My friend had a lovely cottage in Whiston (just off Junction 33) and has now moved to a new development in Treeton which again seems nice. Price for 4 bed new build about £190k. hth
malay2001 22-09-2005, 18:55 I cannot recommend Woodhouse enough, definately a place on the up. Beighton too. Most of our friends are in Fulwood or Lodge Moor, we were initially recommended to buy there too. We have now been in Woodhouse for nearly 5 years. Haven't regreted it one bit.
