View Full Version : Whats the most beautiful song you've ever heard?
susa41981 22-08-2005, 20:43 What does everyone rate as the most beatiful song they've ever heard. Just listening to Eva Cassidy's songbird and got to say 'Fields of Gold' could make me cry if it let it. Also the way she sings 'Over the rainbow'. What do you class as no1?
Fields of Gold
Sting
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold
So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold
Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold
See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in fields of gold
We'll walk in fields of gold
Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
touches you doesn;t it. makes me think deeply
crowefan 22-08-2005, 21:42 "over the rainbow" by Eva Cassidy and of course Judy Garland
"Moon River "sang by Audrey Hepburn
and The Windmills of your mind" from the film The Thomas Crown affair
:| :|
I'd go with Eva Cassidy - Rainbow, and also I like John Lennon- Imagine- and Now We are Free from Gladiator.
is it more beautiful if the person is dead? seems to be a theme going round here lol.
i dont know really....i just hope no-one mentions coldplay :gag:
susa41981 22-08-2005, 23:02 definately NOT Coldplay
Aaron Neville & Linda Ronstadt - I Don't Know Much
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
banesmabes 23-08-2005, 21:11 For sheer beauty of the vocals it has to be the Fugees version of Killing Me Softly - Lauren Hill has one of the greatest voices in the world (IMO) but the backing vocals are worth concentrating on almost as much - they're hauntingly beautiful.
pete_fcs 23-08-2005, 21:26 that bluetones first hit
pulp something changed

"Hallelujah" to that

White Horses by Jacky (Lee), theme tune from the 1968 kids TV programme The White Horses. I recently rediscovered this song whilst mass-downloading TV theme tunes from various sites, and amassed lot's of brownie points from my wife who absolutely loved this song when she was young(er) :)
absynthfairy 23-08-2005, 23:49 Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton and Bridge over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel.
also - All I Want is You - U2
Cannonball by Damien Rice does it for me every time..
Most of my 'favourite' songs are upbeat but as for beautiful, I'd go for these:
Dubstar did a Mark Radcliffe session of 3-4 songs that was totally gorgeous, sometime after Stars came out first time round (1995?).
Roxette - Never is a Long Time - it's an album track off Tourism and is totally precious
Beth Orton - Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine
Catatonia - Bullimic Beats - the bit where the string section sweeps in is heartbreaking
Your Song as it's done in Moulin Rouge is one for making you feel like a big gurl
Jeff Buckley Hallelujah is awesome too but for Damien Rice I'd go for Delicate.

Ooooh I like the Blowers Daughter... I saw Closer at the cinema and the scene that its playing made me cry... not in a "titanic" way but even so...
miwinter 24-08-2005, 10:54 Maxwell - "This Woman's Work"
I have to say there are many songs I would class as beautiful but my favourites have to be:
Without You - Nilsen
I'm still Waiting - Diana Ross
Over the Rainbow - Eva Cassidy (I prefer her version of fields of fire as well)
and a song I heard recently now comes under 'my favourites' is by a singer I haven't heard of before called Gretchen Peters which is called Tomorrow Morning with a B side called Child of Mine.
Tubthump 24-08-2005, 12:09 Thank God no-one's mentioned James Blunt.
I read an interview with Ralph Little in monday's Metro where he claimed that if you play a girl "Hallelulah" on a first date, you're guaranteed to get laid.
Agent Gypo 24-08-2005, 20:37 Most beautiful song has to be '(Twist) The Knife (Slowly)' by Napalm Death.
threecolours 24-08-2005, 20:58 Ones that come to mind quickest....
Gabriel - Lamb
Adagio For Strings - William Orbit
Love theme from romeo and juliet the film - Des'ree (yeah...i know..)
Spiegel Im Spiegel - played by anybody as long as its well done! Google for it....its sooo relaxing
Elvis Costello - All This Useless Beauty
Give it a listen before you judge it.

I'll keep a listen out for that . His "Good Year for the Roses" is another beautiful, sad song that sometimes makes me cry.

Does white noise count as a song? More importantly, is it over 10 seconds long? Any longer than that and it would qualify as Napalm Death's "Hey Jude" ;)

Great song. Written by Ewan MacColl, who was Kirsty MacColl's dad.

Fantastic lyrics with a brilliant get out clause at the end!

Personally, I find there's something about Elvis Costello's voice that's very poignant and can be very moving. I also think his version of "She" is gorgeous, whereas Charles Az-no-voice's version just leaves me cold.

mikeyspikey 25-08-2005, 18:05 fields of gold by eva cassiday always gets to me as does her version of over the rainbow---sadly missed and taken before her time!

I wouldn't argue with you about She, but even Elvis worships at the shrine of George Jones.
I thought most of the Almost Blue album was pretty good, although I read recently that Elvis now views the whole exercise as little more than parody. Oh well.
radiohead "no surprises" is just haunting.
Currently like Adems "Statued" from Dead Mans Shoes soundtrack
Radiohead - Pyramid Song
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb - How soul lifting is that guitar solo
Stereophonics - Billy Davies Daughter
Loads of other I can name. Does anyone notice how some of the hard core metal bands come out with the most fantastic acousitc songs, Slipknot - Vermillin pt 2, Disturbed - Darkness
Joel
Radiohead, 'Let Down' from OK Computer.
It's a perfect song.
