Well I've picked up my new Notebook and it has built in 802.11/g wireless LAN.
The problem is it's not finding my wireless router :? I've checked my router settings and it's not hidden in any way. I know it's working because it's picked someone else's up fine.

Anyone got any ideas what to do next?

PS. It's a BT Voyager 2100 wireless router.

Is SSID brodcasting enabled?

might be a silly question, but it is enabled isn't it. Worth checking the fn keys and the bios to ensure that it's not turned off.

And you are using the windows 'wireless zero config' service and not a third party driver?

Can you see any networks when you search, or it just constantly says that it can't find any.
I had mine turned off the other day (did it on the train to save battery) and spent the entire evening rebooting and reseting the access point to try and solve it, before spotting that the blue light wasn't lit up.

Joelc: No idea what the broadcasting part is :? I placed the router name/group in the SSID and it did nothing.

Cyclone: It must be enabled because it's popping up all the time telling me a connection is available. I even connected to it for a few seconds to try it

I added the network using the wireless set up wizard. It is there but it has a cross at the side of it.

Any more ideas (In Numpty speak please  )

Ok, you know I'm non-techie ;) but.....

Can you plug into your router with a cable?
Can you connect then?

Do you have any other equipment that can see the outside world through it?

Yep,yep and yep Strix...... 1 desktop, 1 laptop already connected fine and i'm using the new laptop at the min connected with the cable.

It's got to be something to do with the onboard card but i'm looking about in the dark when it comes to wireless networks

[EDIT] If this bloody D-Link connection keeps flashing in my face, i might just use it! :suspect:

So basically the laptop says 'hi router' and the router can hear, but says 'sod off, you're not coming in' if you've got that on display?

I'm starting to think the router doesn't support this built in card :?

The software that came with the router only supports their own network cards :(

Only if it's been told to ;)

I'm assuming you've delved into it's set up manually?

(grandmas and eggs and all that?)

Can't say as I know of a wireless router\access point that will only work with its own products. Wireless is wireless, it's like wired, only with no wires. You shouldn't need any software that came with the router installing on client machines in order for them to connect.

I've had trouble setting my wireless up in the past and have had to enable SSID broadcast and drop security to connect, then one by one put everything back to the way it was and it works. The main 2 thing usually is SSID broadcast.

Well i wouldn't know SSID Broadcast if it hit me in the face :?
I've looked in my router settings and i can't see anything amiss there.

When you say you've looked at your router settings, what did you do?

have you used your internet browser to look at the 'pages' (address?) for the box, or did you just get a windows popup style box with a few lines of nothing much on?

Nah, i can access the entire router settings while i'm connected via the cable. Everything is fine with the router settings so i'm going through everything on this Notebook until i find it! Muhahahahahah

Go into the router setup, turn off SSID broadcast, turn off security settings, try to connect then.

If in doubt, RTFM.

I've plugged the Voyager 1060 laptop card in and it's working fine.
If nobody has any ideas i might just have to buy another one of these cards

I take it that the other network that was being offered is a neighbours network or something?

So that rules out a physical problem with the adaptor, and your other machines connect okay, so that rules out a physical problem with the access point.

ssid broadcast is where the name of the network ie Belkin in your neighbours case is broadcast, the very smallest step in securing your network is to disable that broadcast, which means you have to put the ssid in manually, but it sounds like you've already done that.

You haven't at some point enabled MAC address filtering security on your access point have you? Although that would only explain things if you'd once added the voyager card as an allowed address.

It's worth disabling all the security and then turning it back on step by step...
Strix - you obviously have a different router to vidster, they don't all have the same menu's or indeed even the same options.

I don't have any security switched on at the minute Cyclone. I'll switch it on once I've got this problem sorted.
I've just switched the laptop on and the other network showed up straight away. Strange how it can't see my network.

Any more ideas?

Could IP Filtering have anything to do with it? It's switched on for all outbound traffic at the minute but i don't want to touch it unless it's a possibility.
