hello just wanted a little advice please. Last week were at the park and found 2 kittens dump in a box :( of course my wife and kids were there so instantly fell in love, we brought them home and took them straight to the vets there are about 7 weeks old now and were in good health apart from being under weight which we are sorting. We have obviously had these kittens just over a week now and our children are getting quite attatched we do not have any other pets and have been lovely additions to the family they are coming out their shell and love attention. The idea was to get them on track and give them away as my wife has only 2 weeks left to go before baby number 3 is born. We would all love love to keep the kittens as have come this far with them and they fit in with our family we actually love them to bits but quite afew people have said cats and a baby are no no  probably a silly question but as have not had pets before would like some advice on if we could keep them or if it is now time to think about rehoming them please thanks very much

We never had any problems with having cats and young babies - everything should be fine...

In fact, it all started off when one night in the pouring rain we found a very young kitten sat on the doorstep - that was 10 years ago and my ex wife still has him :hihi:

Agree, I have live in cat households from birth and my sister had a cat when her daughter was born. Depending on the temperment of the cat (and the baby!) it may be wise not to leave them together unsupervised but other than that there shouldn't be any issues. Enjoy the kittens and the new baby!

thanks everyone thats what we thought :) kids and wife will be happy and saves us looking in future for a pet as im sure i would have had to give in eventually they are such lovely little cats and its sad to think someone could do that to them but will be well looked after by us were still learning things and today have learnt we need a scratch pole if we would like our leather sofa to stay as it is :hihi: well another trip to the vets next week then for another checkup and to arrange vaccines then arrange getting them done as we found out at vets last week there both female too and we do not want any more unexpected pets :D thanks everyone

Did she have to go for custody or was it amicable :D on a more serious note pets and kids are meant for each other just don’t leave them unattended as someone as already said.

I had a 2 year old cat when i had my little boy the thought never crossed my mind to get rid of the cat he was more of a baby than the baby. Everyone was warning of how not to leave them alone etc which of course is common sense but if you get your kits used to been in one room eg the kitchen then it will prob make things easier for you, Just don't let the wife near the cat poo while she's pregnant. My leather suite took some hammer when mine were kittens until they mastered that the could jump on the suite instead of climbing up it  Try zooplus for a scratching post they have some great offers at the moment. Shop around for innoculations/spaying some vets charge the earth! Beech vets at high green are defo the cheapest i've found and the staff are great!!
Hope this helps

Well done Matt and family for doing the right thing for these little ones :)

As long as you teach the babies to let the kittens have their space and teach the kittens to let the babies have their space then everything should be fine- 99% of all problems with children getting scratched are caused by the children squeezing the kittens, holding them in a way that hurts, scaring the kitten or not allowing the kitten to leave from a cuddle or game when they want to. Sort out that bit and your brood should grow up in a happy and loving relationship!

So glad you're keeping them!

I think it's just an old wive's tale about not having cats and babies - I can remember when my brother was a baby (47 years ago!) my mum put a cat net over his pram when he was out in the garden, so a cat couldn't sleep on his face and smother him!!!!:hihi:

If your kits are strong and healthy then they should be ready for vaccination at 9 and 12 weeks (a little later if they're held back by being particularly small or have diarrhoea or other health problems) and ready for spay or neuter at 6 months.

You also need to be worming them if you haven't already- virtually all kittens have worms so you'll need some worming syrup or granules to give on a 3 weekly basis until they're comfortably over 1kg when you can give them a quarter or half a Drontal (worked out as a proportion of a full pill- a whole pill treats 4kg of cat) every 4 months to keep the worm loading down. You can buy Drontal pills online much cheaper than from a vet.

Add into that a spot on flea treatment (which you can also buy online, including the kitten weight drops) and that's your general maintenance schedule for cats, unless they get ill of course.

ah what a lovely story with a happy ending! Congrats on your new babies - 5 kids, 4 cats here. Always had cats, since before the kids were born. I think it's lovely for children to grow up around pets. Don't forget to post photos, we like photos on here :D

All you need to do is not let them upstairs or let the baby near their poo..otherwise cats are beautiful alongside babies. :) the only thing is toxiplamosis is when they are little but along as the poo is away then it is fine :)

Don't let the cats or kids out to play at night
Clean up all your household pet poo and don't give it to the neighbours
Don't let the kids eat the cats food - but of course it's ok to feed the cats whatever the kids eat :)
But most of all enjoy your new family.
