View Full Version : Footballers and drinking
It's a disgrace.
They should be role models.
After hearing Milan Baros saying that moving to Villa isn't a backwards step it must be rife all over the Premiership

I dont see why they should be role models, they are just doing a job afterall. As long as they arent drinking on the pitch (drinking at work) then I dont see the problem with what they do in their own private life.
They SHOULD be role models.. kids look up to them and try and emulate them dont they?
I mean I dread to think what some poor kid has learned from Gazza???
Don_Kiddick 22-08-2005, 22:50 How to cry & throw a tantrum if you don't get what you want with minimum effort?
Oh yes!!
Teaching our kids and our future athletes to cheat, beat women up, and basically be complete yobs.
For shame!
And its always ENGLISH players... its never foreigners, have you noticed?

Allegedly!
Not proven at the moment though :)
I have thought of two foreigners who you could class as yobs I suppose- Di Canio and Cantona.
But in defence of Eric, if someone shouted out to me within earshot that my mother was a french whore... I would drop kick them as well.

great role model you would be then
Greenback 23-08-2005, 08:26 Oh dear, I think this one has flown high into the stratosphere and over a few heads!
Think he'll be a decent signing for the Villa though.

Sticking up for me mam in public, I would think so mate :)
And certainly the guy cantona was giving a beatdown to was a bit of a loony anyway- he tried to attack the judge in court so to me Eric was justified!

I'm not being funny now robbie but you are starting to **** me off royally now.. its ok to start on me in one topic but dont carry it onto this one as well.
So if you were cantona- and some thug started calling your mum a whole, and just started mouthing off at you- which cantona did say happened- would you not have done the same thing? But I suppose you are so god-like.. you'd have just sat back and taken it right?
Funny that, I heard it was the judge he attacked- I will check on that though.
I do go on about role models, or lack of-- I do condone what cantona did.. someone discrespects me, or my family.. I'd do exactly the same... as would you in life-- unless your a bit weak really.
EDIT: You were right!
Just found it here http://www.footballsite.co.uk/Statistics/Articles/Cantona.htm
However Matthew Simmons, the Palace fan, was found guilty of provoking the attack and was fined 500 and banned from all football for 12 months. He was also jailed for a week for jumping a bench in court to attack a prosecuting solicitor!
I was wrong- :(
Guderian 23-08-2005, 22:03 Hey Angelus!

what your saying though is footballers should be role models.... he was paid around 2 million a year at that time or something?? so yes he should have let it roll off his back..... but as stated before.... it was not to do with his mother... see below link

Erm no.. actually- Eric himself said that the Matthew racially abused him- AND called his mum a french whore.
a better man would walk away
Sorry to say this- but call yourself a man?
I have to laugh at that really.
i generally am right :heyhey:
You are really arrogant and patronising you know as well.. cocky as well perhaps :)
40summat 24-08-2005, 14:54 I see no reason why footballers shouldn't drink so long as it doesn't affect the job, same as any adult really.
to rugby players it's part of the culture it's only because the media don't make an issue of it.
From what i gather (media fuelled again i must add) gambling is the new 'vice' of footballers now.

Ruud van Nistelrooy did say (a couple of years ago) that gambling was rife at Manchester United.
Michael Owen's also well into his gambling apparently, which is pretty appropriate seeing as he may soon be joining Newcastle Comedy Club.

I've not heard the rumour about man utd coming from Ruud, but I would not be at all surprised really.

I'm trying to hunt it down for you- as I knew you would ask :)
I'm after the video footage of him saying it for you as well - just to make sure.

Are you a lady then? LOL....

Agreed :)
Guderian 24-08-2005, 19:21 I heard that Simmons said "f off back to France you French Bas***d"
I seem to remember that Simmons own account went quite differently. it was hilarious - he claimed he had said:
"Its an early bath for you Cantona!", as eric walked past, and this was enough to provoke Eric into battering him!
Agent Gypo 24-08-2005, 20:16 Just a thought, but perhaps if some parents looked after their children properly, they wouldn't have to look for footballers paid £70,000 per week to be role models for them....

but it is only natural for them to be role models......
they wanna be like them, and copy what they do
i think that environmental factors affect whether they are violent or not as well as education, so although the fact that gazza may have slapped his wife doesn't mean all his fans are gonna copy.
children need a role model & personal aspirations, its no worse than wanting to be an author or film director - if they were more "newsworthy" we'd find that they were druggies/alco's or abusers as well.

Oooh Mr Loving. Not wanting to comment on footballers and drinking (clearly, they shouldn't) just wanted to say hulloooo! Not seen you for ages!
Sorry folks. Back to the topic :(
There are some things you just have to do...
dishwasher 29-08-2005, 08:41 If professional footballers are seen boozing in public, it can leave them open to damning criticism.
If they and their team are doing well, winning regularly, people will say they're celebrating etc and good luck to them.
But if their team is drawing or losing, people will say, well what do you expect, I saw XXXXXX XXXXXXX supping booze. No wonder they're not winning if they're all out on the lash.
Some may be able to burn the candle at both ends - Tony Adams, for example - but it's hardly good PR to be a professional sportsperson and be seen boozing.
Some members of the public can be very critical, and quick to criticise, and often they'll pounce on anything.
