A friend who now lives in Canada mentioned this - is there a map anywhere?
I think it runs round Shalesmoor and Kelham Island?

View Full Version : Where is the Real Ale Trail please? lauramottram 22-08-2005, 14:51 A friend who now lives in Canada mentioned this - is there a map anywhere? I think it runs round Shalesmoor and Kelham Island? E x the fonz 22-08-2005, 16:06 Here is some info: http://www.quaffale.org.uk/crawls/sheffield/sheffieldcrawl.html no map im afraid though and it does involve going into Hillsborough Bilge 23-08-2005, 12:24 I can't find a map either - maybe someone will put up an updated one before long. Pub news here: http://www.sheffieldcamra.co.uk/sheffieldnews.htm It's debatable which pubs are included but a crawl using the tram can cover all the main recommended ones (beerwise) in this part of town plus a couple of others nearby. Here's one possible route with a round figure of 10 pubs which serve cask ales to choose from. 1 and 2 are well worth the effort by the way... HILLSBOROUGH tramstop: 1. New Barrack Tavern [5 mins walk from tram] LANGSETT tramstop: 2. Hillsborough Hotel [adjacent] SHALESMOOR tramstop: Most of them are around this area so do a circuit with your route dependent on which ones you're going to include. Kelham Island area can still be slightly dodgy at night (though it's gradually regenerating) so take care: 3. Cask & Cutler [adjacent] 4. Gardener's Rest [5 mins walk from tram - it's actually slightly nearer Infirmary Rd tram so you could get off there and do Cask & Cutler last, but there's not much in it] 5. Kelham Island Tavern [5 mins walk from tram] 6. Riverside [getting on for 7-10 mins walk from tram] 7. Fat Cat [5 mins walk from tram] 8. Ship Inn [2 mins walk from tram]. WEST STREET tramstop: 9. Red Deer [2 mins walk from tram] 10. Devonshire Cat [5 mins walk from tram] [Obviously you're back in town by this stage so there are several other options nearby too.] spiffymonkey 23-08-2005, 13:42 Originally posted by Bilge SBOROUGH tramstop: 1. Devonshire Cat [5 mins walk from tram] [Obviously you're back in town by this stage so there are several other options nearby too.] This is my local trail. I used to live in Upperthorpe but moved over to Longley, so starting at the Hillsborough Hotel and working along via the Gardners, Fat Cat, Kelham and then up to Red Deer/Devvy Cat (only visiting the Riverside and the Ship if time permits) is just about right to end up in town in time to get a taxi back again. Not been in the Cask for a few years, though. What's it like these days? noseyrosie 23-08-2005, 14:23 Gardener's Arms?! It's called the Gardener's Rest! Cardinal 23-08-2005, 14:23 Was in the 'Cask & Cutler' a couple of weeks back, still pretty much as it's always been. In need of a lick of paint (arguably) but the beer is good!! ;) bellis 23-08-2005, 14:28 Originally posted by noseyrosie Gardener's Arms?! I don't think she'd be too happy about that, whoever Ken Bates is. K. Meaks 23-08-2005, 16:03 lol - Yes, thats Eddy and he does look a bit like Ken Bates! :hihi: Bilge 23-08-2005, 17:59 Originally posted by noseyrosie Gardener's Arms?! It's called the Gardener's Rest! Yeah, brain not engaged - sorry! Another stop could be the Red House - which is arguably a 5 min dash from Netherthorpe Rd tramstop. But I've never been in myself (it was shut at about 9.30 last time I tried) and it's not that easy to find - so maybe best left out. Meaks 23-08-2005, 18:03 When did you last try and go the Red House Bilge? Not been for a few weeks as I fell out with them, I think its days in its current incarnation are numbered - have heard other reports of it being closed in the week :( Oh and he doesn't have much in the way of ale these days. lauramottram 24-08-2005, 11:40 thanks guys, as usual a good service provided from fellow forumers :0) e x Bilge 01-09-2005, 14:00 Originally posted by Meaks When did you last try and go the Red House Bilge? It was a few months ago when I went. Been meaning to go in for years as the beer was always supposed to be good and it had live music on, but I never knew exactly where it was and didn't fancy stumbling round that area looking lost. I later heard it often closes when it's not very busy - which doesn't really encourage me to try again. |
