I went to watch the steelers as a child from 1991 when they started until about 2003. As a family we stopped going as it got very expensive.
In 'the good old days' going to the steelers was an AMAZING night.
A fewdrinks and meet friends in the Enfield pub.
Atmosphere entering arena was amazing, pompoms, rattles, whistles etc.....
Each player had a nickname which simmsy used to let ppl vote for.
throughtout the game adrenaline was pumping, nothing better than a good fight amongst rival teams!! You couldnt go through 1 period without a good old passionate scrap!!!!
Merchandise stall packed out with goodies and fans buzzing round it at every interval!
Sponsors like M&Ms handing sweets out to the kids.
end of the match meeting players like shudra, tommy, hand, priestly etc... In Enfield for a chat n drinks!
Going to virtually every away game, meeting the players back at the arena, getting to know the players families......
I could go on!
Only been a few time in last 8yrs and it's so disapponiting and leaves me longing for years gone by.
Tonight was a sad night watching them retire rons shirt, but nice to remember the above.
I sat watching the tonight and felt nothing of the passion the team and fans had before. Tonight was packed, over 8500 ppl and we kicked the flop cats backsides, but that alone was it for me.
At one point 2 players got into a 3 second heated discussion and some ppl behind me where shouting
'go on, have him'..... I just found myself thinking 'you ain't seen nothing'
the passion just isn't there, the atmosphere isn't there and most of all the entertainment isn't there. The players and fans were a big family at one point.
A sad rememberence day for me.
