Not being from Sheffield I could do with some help on this one - I have searched through the archives but not found a definate answer with real evidence and wondered if anyone can help me out with this -

Which ground Wednesday or United - was built on a pig farm?

Just curious as a couple of my collegues are disagreeing about it.

Thanks

This is an extract from a document from the Sheffield Local History Society, which can be viewed at Sheffield's Central Library.

"The Wednesday football club was formed on 4th September 1867. The football club first played its games at the Olive Grove Sports Ground in Heeley before moving to a new stadium in the Owlerton district of Sheffield.
The first Ordnance Survey maps (1850's) mark a building close to where the stadium now stands as 'Swine Cottage'. They also show another farm on Penistone Road, south of where the North Stand is situated, which was also believed to be a large piggery. Pork farming is thought to have been practised in the area since the early 1800's, and did not cease until around 1900 when the city's rapid expansion put an end to livestock production in the area. At its height the "Owlerton Piggery," as it was known, provided work for some 50 employees.
Initial discussions about a nickname began soon after the Wednesday arrived at Owlerton. In reference to their new home, most club officials were in favour of "The Owls." However, another suggestion was also popular. In view of the area's strong tradition of pork farming, a popular grass-roots alternative was "The Pigs."
Although the name "Owls" prevailed, many working class supporters continued to refer to their team as "t'pigs." A popular song of the time "They may be t'Owls to some, (but they'll always be pigs to me)" was performed in music halls across South Yorkshire. As late as the 1920's, fans used to welcome their team onto the field with the characteristic grunting sound we still associate with the club. This peculiarity was once referred to by BBC commentator Edward Milburn, who famously described Hillsborough as a "sea of grunts" moments after The Wednesday won the First Division title in 1932.

So there you have it. Put those paint tins away.

I don't know, United vs Wednesday - seems to me like a tramp arguing with his rabid dog. I would say that Bramall Lane was built on a sty; Hillsbrough is more of a farmyard.

My Husband is a Sheffield Utd fan and so is my Dad. so the influence on my little boy was obviously Utd, a couple of years ago we were driving down past the Wednesday ground, and my little boy seeing the owl on the side of the ground said "which football team is that dad"
My husband said "it's the Sheffield Wednesday Team"
to which my little boy said " I thought that they were the pigs"

:D :D :D

There are plausible explanations from both sides.

There is historical evidence to supprt the claim that Hillsborough had a pig farm.

United fans call wednesday 'pigs' as a mocking substitute for 'owls'

Wednesday fans call united pigs because of the red and white 'bacon rasher'

Even if people claim that Bramall Lane was a pig farm, Wednesday played there first... so same answer... Wednesday are the pigs.

Well i have got maps of Hillsborough from 1850 and 1902, there are no buildings on the land where the Wednesday ground is whatsoever, and in 1850 the land from the point of leppings lane to Broughton lane including all Hillsborough Park belonged to James Dixon a silver smith.

James Dixon sold the park to the corporation soon after when Sheffield expanded the city boundaries for what was said to be a quite considerable amount, And around 1898/9 sold 10 acres of land to The Wednesday for £10,000, said to be “meadow land covered in dandelions”.

Herries road did not exist that is marked as a footpath. Opposite what would be the ground where the fair is, that is marked as “new dam”, and at the side of that Wardsend steel works.

Hillsborough is a very industrial area full of Foundries, Steelmaking, Brickyards, but no Farms at all, the nearest seems to be up Wadsley lane and Longley.

In 1850 from the river to the point of Leppings lane and Penistone road there is 2 buildings on one half acre plot, about where the shop is now and that is marked pump,

In 1850 the bridge at Leppings Lane is not there it is just marked stepping stones, but in 1902 the bridge is built.

I think the real piggies are trying to change history.

Obviously, this pig farm malarky is all complete nonsense.

I don't remember either side calling the others pigs when I was a little lad, I first heard it as schoolboy in the late 70's. I don't ever remember hearing my dad or grandad refer to either team as the pigs (they were both wednesdayites).

I don't think there is any historical precedence for this, but I'd be interested to know when other members first heard the term used.

This post has been "moderated" by David Daft.

David Daft no longer wishes his words to be associated with the Sheffield Forum. In an exclusive interview today, David stated "this is a knee jerk reaction to the Mods' ever-changing moods and the cove's chameleon-like rule book."

When asked if he would be sad to be leaving the Forum, David responded with "not really, there all bumders anyway!"

getting away from the pig farm debate. i dont think it is to do with the teams. its more to do with the supporters. blunts are usually - more ignorant, ugly, mardy, smelly, poorer, more inbred, thicker and live in deprived areas - pigs in other words, end of story!

It does not take a lot of common sense to work this one out, lots of pork butchers shop in Hillsbro wednesday called that, due to the pork butchers taking that day off to play ,and the guy with the map must have used a antique globe not to see all the little stys on it. I cannot see the problem its fun Derby and Welsh clubs fans sometimes sing 1-0 to the sheep shaggers when they are winning but no sense of humour in Sheffield 6

Taken from the Doomsday Book 1067 by Will The Conqueror -
" Yea verily forsooth, there be a field in the lane called Bramm Hall in the village of Scheffeld in ye County of Hallam where ye pigges do frolic and playe. Henceforth shall all who do play upon yon field be called pigges by those who dwell therein."
So there it is. Undeniable, irrefutable, cross my heart etc etc.

As a 100% Blade, can I say... "ENOUGH ALREADY!!!" Wednesday call United Pigs. United call Wednesday Pigs. Why? Because it's funny in a childish and immature manner. Any historical backing for either claim? Of course not. Celtic call Rangers the Huns: are they really descended from warlike Central Asian equestrian nomads? No.

Now may I suggest that the children tidy their toys away while the grown ups have a nice soothing drink...
