I'm really fancying the idea of just chilling-out some evenings - just relaxing with the lights off, some candles on, and maybe a good bottle of wine - with some appropriate music to listen to.

Chill-Out music is not my forte, however, so I wondered if other forummers more knowledgeable than me could suggest some suitable material?

I'm kind of thinking along the lines of The KLF and The Orb.

Cheers,

StarSparkle

And the following by Fila Brazillia, the finest chill out music you can imagine

"Luck be a weirdo tonight"
"Black Market Gardening"
"A touch of cloth"

Astralasia is trippy but good, recommend Axis Mundi.

William Orbit' strange cargo is very good too, although I've really only listened to it in passing

Also Making Music - Zakir Hussein. It's not electronica, but you don't care.

Although that sometimes becomes "wig out music" rather than chill out. Bitches brew anyone?

I really liked Michael Grech's "Open Heart Zoo" (did I get that right?)

Does anyone know if the album from which it came from as good as that track?

Starsparkle,

Have you thought of Classical music? There is a near inexhaustible well of chill out music to choose from - for example, Mozart or Haydn string quartets, or almost anythng by Vivaldi, or piano music by Mozart, Chopin or Field. There are lots of 'chill out' classical compilations to choose from also.

try listening to Biosphere.. really good ambient music to imagine yourself in faraway places

Fila Brazilia too :)

I'll second the Miles Davis call, but would specify 'Kind Of Blue' as supreme 'chill out' (as opposed to 'wig out') music. Also in the same vein, and equally lovely, is 'Idle Moments', by Grant Green, if only for the title track (all fourteen heavenly minutes of it) and track four - the others are a bit 'Tomorrow's World', if you know what I mean, but great when you're in the mood.

Lord C makes a good point re. classical music. I would recommend a collection of Mozart Adagios (ie slow movements). HMV stock an excellent compilation on the (sometimes dodgy) Naxos label. Chopin's Nocturnes are also absolutely beautiful and perfect for that 'late night stillness' vibe.

Robert Rich - Below Zero
Robert Rich/B. Lustmord - Stalker (a sombient classic)

Almost anything by Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Biosphere, Dilate, Lightwave etc etc etc.

Portishead and Tosca are possibilities for this time of night.

Although recently I've been selecting classical pieces at this time of night.

There are times for Razorlight to be played loudly, there are times for classicak to be pkayed loudly. Although 0115 usn't a good time for my second suggestion!

Personally for chilling out I play any of the following:

Softish Rock: Joe Satriani, Pink Floyd, Ayreon

Classical: Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons, various Mozart pieces, Tubular Bells 2

there are probably others, I just can't think of them at the moment :?

Radio 1's chillout radio show 'The Blue Room' is available to listen to over the internet at any time, it gets updated every week after it is broadcast to that week's show.

I always find that to be a good choice of relaxing stuff. Plus it's free.

Very many thanks to everyone who replied to my thread - some fantastic suggestions that have really got me thinking. Sounds like you've come up with just exactly the sort of music I was looking for, so cheers everyone!

In particular, I think William Orbit, Massive Attack, Portishead and Pink Floyd (how could I forget "Wish you were Here"? :loopy: - silly me) are just what I want. Also possibly the Aphex Twin and Morcheeba.

I think I'll start with a chill-out compilation tape though, to get a feel for what's out there. Maybe listen to Radio 1's "Blue Room" chill-out show - thanks for the suggestion, BrainThrust

And Richard Hawley - I'm already a big fan of the man - but I wouldn't see him exactly as chill-out, myself. I'd put his music on to specifically Listen to it, if you know what I mean, rather than having it there as more background music. If that makes sense?

Lord Chaverly and Lord Snooty - thank you both for your classical music suggestions. Excellent choices, I'm sure. But I'm funny about classical music - some pieces I absolutely adore, but most just leave me cold, I'm sorry to say. :( It's a failing, I know, but perhaps I'll learn to properly appreciate classical music one day. Who knows, maybe chill-out music might be my route to the classical composers?

Again, many thanks to all - much appreciated, cheers

Mr Kiddick, I salute thee:thumbsup:

I've got most of Classic FM's box-set compilations.

It's not so much chill-out music but music to melt to.

Absolutely fabulous, one can really go places in one's mind with this music. Utter chillability. (Can I copyright that phrase?)

well, if you ever want a chill-out compilation tape done I'd be delighted to oblige. I do make a mean compilation tape (if I do say so myself) :D

a lot of classical leaves me cold as well. I like classical music mixed with slightly newer stuff

I agree with the Sigur Ros suggestion. I've been a fan for many years (brand new album out; Takk) They're Icelandic and sing in their own language which they call 'Hopelandic'

Try this, it comes from their offical website (so these are not illegal copies or anything). It's perhaps there most famous track.

Good suggestions everyone...
I like listening to Portishead, Zero 7 and Assemblage 23. Assemblage 23 aren't that well known. it's just one bloke who does everything and it's slow EBM music.

some people call it 'electronic bleepy music' but I think it's meant to stand for 'eltic body music'. I think bleepy is better. It's sort of like industrial music but with more electronic dance elements. Sometimes can be a bit trancy even.

I'm a big fan of chillout or "downtempo" music as it's known across the Atlantic. I usually listen to live365.com that has several stations dedicated to chillout/ambient/downtempo, or I use Winamp to tune in to stations such as Monkey Radio or Secret Agent Radio. I would suggest trying internet radio - it has a great variety of stations.

My fave chillout stuff is Orbital, and Morcheeba (The new album is fantastic). Also like Irreverance and Reperspective by Faithless (Same albums as Reverence and Outrospective but with an extra remix of some tracks).

One suggestion for relaxing music would be John Hackett's Velvet Afternoon - original compositions for flute and piano.

One website describes it:

One CD which certainly fits the bill is a CD from local resident John Hackett entitled Velvet Afternoon . The music on this CD is all by John Hackett and features peaceful compositions played on flute and piano. Absolutely ideal for swinging dreamily in a hammock on a sunny afternoon with a chilled glass of De Koninck nearby. Priced at a modest £9-99, this is well worth exploring.
