View Full Version : Could you go a day without buying something?
I think I'm addicted to shopping.
I don't mean just clothes shopping either. Seems I can't go a day without making some form of purchase. I tried to today, but only made it to 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Then an overwhelming sense of anxiety forced me to buy some mineral water from a rather nice shop.
Made me think. Is it possible to make it through a day without buying?
Is it something that a lot of people do all the time? Do you make pack lunches and bring in a flask to work? Is this going on? How do you not get so bored you want to die?
And why is it that nipping out to 'grab a latte', or popping in to pick up some 'something nice' is so addictive and comforting?
lizzmobile 21-08-2005, 21:55 I think you need some help darling.
I've not bought anything today......

Neither have I!
:)
What, not even a Sunday paper? Or a snack??
There have been days when due to no money I've not bought a sausage.
Walked to work, walked back, taken lunch from home.
:)
StarSparkle 21-08-2005, 22:11 It's very easy to go a few days without buying something when you've got no money, Deavon! :D

No, I mugged a passing child and stole theirs instead. :D
redrobbo 21-08-2005, 22:27 I've not been out of doors today, and haven't spent a penny. I think I went 4 consecutive days last week without finding the need to buy anything, as I tend to shop for food every few days, rather than daily. Why this compulsion to spend, spend spend Deavon?
fnkysknky 21-08-2005, 22:46 Probably end up buying something everyday but that's mainly because I work all over the place so purchase fuel, food etc.
LordChaverly 21-08-2005, 22:47 Deavon,
Its generally known as retail therapy. The therapeutic aspect derives from the instant 'hit' or gratification you get from making the transaction and the anticipation of using or consuming the product. It makes one's life just a little bit more exciting and also breaks up the routine of our daily existence. There is a gender aspect, in that in men it frequently manifests itself in an addiction to buying gadgets (as in my case) and in women an addiction to buying shoes or other articles of clothing. For some purchases, we also expect a transformational or life changing experience. Its also known as Ebayitis.
I used to work with a guy who only took 32p to work each day, so he could buy a Star. He never had any other money on him, so if there was a collection for somthing he used to have to give an IOU and then bring cash the next day.
I usually spend somthing each day - but recently when I was ill I didn't leave the house for 2 days so didn't spend anything then.
I can go over a week without spending, of course payments go out of the bank. but if I don't go out I don't spend.

I believe Deavon is a chapess, i.e. laydee, not a laddie
absynthfairy 22-08-2005, 19:12 I'm a compulsive shopper, but i'm not as bad as i used to be or anywhere near as bad as some i know...i used to see a bereavement counsellor a few years back and notoriously spent more time about my shopping habits than my poor dead mother, bless her... she taught me to say "maybe later".
I can't be helped in boots or primark though.

Must be an age thing Hazel, I go out on Saturdays only and don't always part with cash. Wife makes up for it though :help: , she's a bit younger than me :)
I would be able to do it, until I get to the pub that is.
I think I don't spend because I've reached an age when I don't want much.
When I was young I desparately wanted this and that. Quite sure that these things would change my life.
Now I just want a simple liife the less possessions the better.
Possessions tie you down.

I love it when I go a day or even a few at a push without buying anything!!!
I hate it when I have worked all day and call at the supermarket and load up - gets to the check out and it comes to...der der derrrrrrr...more than I have earnt that particular day:confused:
I just think..huh all that effort for a trolley load of food...!
Don't get me wrong I am not tight but I like to see my money occasionally going on luxury stuff, not just essentials like bills and food....where it always seems to go!!
:(
When I was working full-time I used to spend loads. Used to go out at lunch time round the shops in town. Debenhams was my downfall!
Now, don't work, don't go out much, don't spend much ... Just buy the essentials from the supermarket. Don't even go clothes shopping these days (as any of you who come to the meets regularly will be able to tell :hihi: )
It's easy to go a week without buying something in Sheffield, in Leeds, Manchester or London it would be much harder as there are more tempting shops.

Might be harder, but you'd be skint very quickly.
