Just wondering if anyone knew the best value way to line a chimney for a wood burning stove.

We have scaffolding up at the moment and need to get this done asap. Been looking at prices for metal chimney liners and they seem rather pricey.

The thermocrete method isn't cheap either. Is there a more cost effective way of doing it?

Anyone got any experience of this?

The flexible metallic double-skin liner is probably going to be the cheapest. But, as you have found out, it is not that cheap.

Have you actually had the chimney tested to see if it really needs re-lining?

You can tell by looking down it! (got scaffolding up atm).

Its well knackered! We've rebuilt the chimney itself but the internal section needs shoring up a bit!

We were thinking thermocrete would be better - then the whole structure has a bit of support!

We were wondering if the kit you need to do the thermocreting was something you could hire.. whichever way we look at doing it its extortionate!

I'd say it's essential to have it done. There is a significantly greater risk of a chimney fire with a wood burning stove than with smokeless fuel in an old unlined chimney. Might be worth checking with your insurance company.

And the chimney will need to be swept at least once a year.

I would doubt that 'Thermocrete' equipment could be hired for DIY use. They tend to be franchise operations that are out to make their main money from selling their services to you (at a killing!)

The other consideration in all of this is that use of a metal liner to repair an existing chimney does not require involvement of Building Regs., whereas, I think that anything else is going to constitute "building work" and complicate matters.

What is the law with regard to burning wood on household fires in a smokeless zone?

I think that the laws only relate to the production of black smoke and the selling/delivering of non-smokeless fuel.

I don't think that there is any law preventing the actual burning of wood so long as it burns cleanly.
