An article in "The Mail" this week asked if men were becoming more feminised. With better education, more women moving up in the workplace, better jobs, money, the birth control pill, and now being able to buy sperm off the internet, will men eventually become redundant as partners.? I think this has crept up on us slowly, without us noticing. The demise of the manufacturing industry, and heavy manual work, woman have become more independant, but I doubt if they could ever manage without men. After all someone still has to supply the sperm dont they ?

It's a load of crap that women will one day want to do without men! The world is changing (as it has always done), and some of the more traditional 'female' characteristics are becoming important in the workplace, so men are having to adapt. In the most part they are adapting. Remember that men still get paid significantly more than women for similar jobs. The sexes are by no means equal yet - and it is still women who generally get the rough end of the bargain.

Depends what's meant by feminised.

Biologically pollution and the presence of hormone-like compounds in the environment has reduced fertility and possibly led to changes in the male body against what was the norm 50 years ago.

Socially I think that men have been encouraged to become 'caring, sharing and sensitive' and it's been partially succesful. The more educated men have probably taken the message on board more than the 'underclass', and there's also been a backlash in teh form of 'laddism' against it. I think that the pendulum is swinging in the other direction now - I think we can expect an increase in more 'masculine' behaviour again in the next few years.

I think that socially we're in a period of great uncertainty; I believe that we'll see conservatisim (small 'c') tends to come back in things like gender roles and such.

this was prompted by the comments of the BBC news reporter I guess.

Sounds like a load of rubbish to me, Michael Burke, that's the guy. His rant sounded like a load of tosh with a dashing of sexism and a lot of ignorance.

If for little else, most post-modern women still need men for sex and DIY. We can also still do certain things beyond the physical powers of women (such as pee out of a railway carriage window).

I like it if when walking with the boyfriend, some idiot makes a comment aimed at the woman...so she responds with a 'choice' comment...and the boyfriend gets the smack. Thanks guys!!! (Wink wink).

Cr*p!, where is the evidence for this??? I constantly readn this and see no evidence. I know for a fact that my last job, some girls on the graduate scheme were getting paid more than the boys!!!

I think it's more that society and the economy are changing so that we are moving from a heavy industry based society where physical strength and endurance were pre-requisites to a service based economy where people skills are the pre-requisite. And like it or not, communication skills are are far more a feminine trait than a masculine one, so if men want to get jobs they are required to take on feminine traits.

I'd say it was more a case of women becoming more masculine - wanting to be booze-swilling chain-smoking fist-fightin street-brawlin foul-mouthed ladettes.

I blame the sufferojets

It makes me embarrased for their friends, especially if they are out in public..

True in my case Starsparkle. I can explain the basic rules in theory, but have a hard time understanding them in practice. So i just accept what Alan Hanson says.

Having a full toolkit & the skills n wherewithall to do it, some men get jaded very quickly from having their best efforts criticsed & moaned at by the woman in their life (AND her mother) cos
a: He didn't do it fast as they do on TV; ie/ 30 mins.
b: It still doesn't look like the picture in the brochure - even tho she chose everything & planned it.
c: All this and expected to hold down a full time job & eat f***ing quiche ! :hihi:

well, buerk may be an idiot but, the Y chromosome is shrinking and has been doing so for many tens of thousands of years.

Women can now conceive, in vitro, using only their own DNA, aka parthenogenesis.

So it really is up to the women to keep us around or not.

I highly hope that the women of the world also feel they need a partner in their life, if only to improve it! I could live with the wife working and me sitting at home all day watching TV or whatever and then reap the rewards of a normal relationship when she gets home. Brilliant!

But I would miss working I think. I hope this whole thing doesnt happen

As a (seemingly) perpetually single woman, I say yes, definately I feel my life would be greatly enriched by having a partner. It is human nature to want relationships such as this, and I think that to suggest that women will one day 'do without' men, or find them disposable is a huge over-reaction, mainly by men like Burke who feel threatened by women who are successful in what have been traditionally male walks of life.

When I can walk into the john during half time at the game and get done what needs to get done, while the ladies stand cross legged in long lines, and when I can go into a shoe store and be out in 3 minutes flat, then I enjoy being a guy.
Redundant!!, who gives a damn!
I help out at home, and when she gets too critical, I quit and let her get on with it. If that makes her feel superior, good, I don't have to do it any more.

You wouldn't BE sitting around watching TV though. You'd be shopping, doing the laundry and washing up, taking the kids to school and bringing them home again, gardening, decorating, doing your (p/t) job, looking after your parents and parents-in-law, helping out at the local charity shop, making things that the kids really should have done themselves for a school project.

and ... maybe cleaning your wife's golf clubs or washing her tennis outfit, cleaning out the rabbit hutches and walking the dog ... or running about trying to locate all sorts of trivial little items that she "desparately needs before the weekend" so that she can go fishing with the girls or some other pointless activity to get out of the house.

You wouldn't have time to watch TV ...

(and before all you liberated men start flaming - this is not MY life, merely the results of my observations from behind the counter!)

And nobody's mentioned the old Two Ronnies sketch where wimmin ruled the world or the UK at least - am sure it was a Charlie Farley and Piggy Malone sketch!! ;)

But more seriously, the gender roles have changed and are changing. Hesitate to say that wimmin want everything in a man (someone to open jars/do the diy, be sensitive and a good lover etc etc etc) but sometimes I think.....

I'll get my coat!! ;)

Ah, so true are the remarks but I have been thinking, if it did happen it might become a loop, kind of a constant shift between power. Think about it about 100 years ago women didnt have that much power in society, now its pretty much eaqual, in another 100 years, women will be the men of the 1900's and vica versa! Every two hundred years a different sex will be in control and the opposite will soon begin to campaign for equal rights!*

*Please note that this statement may not be true and (probably) will just turn out to be a horrific day dream :)

LOL - it does sound like a bit of a dream! I can't think of a time when women were the dominant sex, and we are by no means equal yet - but there's no denying that things are MUCH better than they used to be - room for improvement though!

But, isn't that what we've always wanted? A man who's a lover, friend, protector, and provider? Men often seem to want a nurturer, carer and lover provided that she doesn't want too much of their time or attention and will look after him like his mother did.

It'd be perfect if we could all achieve that blissful state of being all in all to one another ... but it seems someone always has to compromise ... and women are becoming less willing to be that one ... maybe it's the guy's turn now?

Old Joke but still funny!
It's very important for a woman to have a man to be a provider, a protector, a lover and a friend. It's also very important that these four men should never meet. :P

RubyD, I dunno if it's what women have always wanted but I don't think they'd have [always] got it in the past. Like you say, we have to compromise and that's perhaps the crux of the matter lies - not least in relation to the sexual balance of power.
Makes it all sound a bit....I dunno...sad - if that's the right word. But maybe I'm too much of an idealist/dreamer.

And I take your point re: men and can say that I don't conform to that model. Hate that whole girlfriend is a mother thang!
