The 'Silver Slipper being a gambling club or known more commonly as a 'spieler'. I don't know if it was legit' or not, I went once and it frightened me to death. The main activity seemed to be poker. There were a lot of wannabee big time punters when I went, mysellf included. It was on a corner, looking like a boarded up shop, at the junction of Cemetery Road and maybe Napier St, I forget the actual name. Anybody remember it? More to the point, did anybody lose any money?
We went on a Saturday afternoon because it was open when the other drinking places were closed.I thought it was more of a place for the ladies of the night but looking at some of them maybe the night was the best place for them.Rough old place.

Wasn't it known as the Sutherland Street Club?
It was the Sunderland Social Club, I was taken there after hours by Mick Cowan who did the knock on the door bit, like something out of the godfather.
Bloody hell! I went there with a guy called Wes, he was a player (cards) and I lost £3, a lot of money in '56. You can't buy anything much with three quid nowadays!
