I lived there last year..was a right laugh and had some wicked times there...just a word of warning be prepared for the fire alarm to go off 4 or five times a week..and im not just talking about freshers week either! apart from that..enjoy..lol!

I'm moving in on the 17th of September, Flat 89, Floor 4.

so is exchange works a nice place or is there loads of problems? how far is from Collegiate Campus?

I moved in to Exchange Works last year, and i have never had so much money wasted on something so terrible. When the building work started in November 05, Unite claimed to know nothing about it, and refused to help in any way. Sometimes the building work started at 7am, i was on the floor just above the site so my room literally would start vibrating. The noise was so immense that you couldn't even have a conversation, nevermind sleep/do work/watch tv.

Unite eventually called a meeting in the courtyard there, with Turning Point (the rehab group) and we were vaugely told what was going on (this was however well in to 2006). We were told that we would receive £70 compensation for the whole of the building work. This is one weeks rent at Exchange Works. We rejected it. Myself and my friend petitioned all of Exhange Work, campaigning for more compensation, went to meetings with Unite bosses and with the help of the Equal Opportunities Rep from the Union, eventually claimed a reasonable amount back. Bear in mind that the only reason we got this is because Unite were aware of our plans to promote how unprofessional they actually are.

Basically, i really feel sorry for anybody living with Unite at any of their properties, especially Exchange Works. I know that Unite will not have told anybody moving in about the Turning Point offices below. The building is not secure, you can get in tailgating through the front door. Building work is continuing currently and once you've signed those damn contracts, you're stuck for a year.

Oh yeah, and my shower was broken for the whole of the year, and resulted in my room flooding and £400 worth of my things were ruined. I first complained about this in December 05 and when i moved out in May 06 my room was still sodden.

So, to those of you moving in there, you best get some earmuffs, wellies and probably become a little more streetwise. Watch out for those bloody needles!!!!

I had a mate who lived in exchange works. From what I saw I wouldn't live there if ya paid me! Charlotte court was miles better and not even more expensive. The fact that even normal talking, let alone drunk people talking, echoes in the main court yard , persistant fire alarms and plenty of other reasons would be enough to make me go somewhere else lol.

The rooms aren't to bad though but that's the only upside to it in my opinion.

...I'm moving in to exchange works this september, and after reading this thread i have become very worried!!! can anyone pls give me some good news. i dont like the sound of druggies and people starting trouble :(

i used to go to GateCrasher every weekend and remember when the place was being built so i expected noise etc.. from that place, just like at the student accom near the LeadMill...

ive already signed my contract :( so is it tough luck? or is there any good sides ? Do people really break in? are my things at risk at being stolen? if so i will be sure to bring a metal baseball bat!

and i think there is about 7 rooms to a flat? :S

i actually phoned the Uni and asked about all of this and they deny any druggies being there... they also said to calm down and dont over react, its probably all been blown up out of proportion and the best thing to do is to go down there and actually have a look, and speak to the security guys, ask to see the cameras etc... (they have to let you btw), and generally make sure you feel safe :)

but can the guys at Uni be trusted? :huh:

Hey agen. i dunno if ne1 can help or advise me, but exchange works doesnt have any car parking, but like ya do, i applied for it anyway, even though i have a car...
does anyone else have a car??? or if anyone knows anyone in another campus close by that has car parking?

yeah that sucks big time.... how are we supposed to move in if we cant park to unload our stuff? The university should be able to give us advice about parking. As far as i know no campus close by has carparking... the one up off Division street might have it, not sure tho.

There is temporary parking outside, but with regards to moving massive amount of stuff into your flats you're stuck and will have to work the hard way. There is a car park up behind the Uni which is about 2 mins walk.

yeh, the fire alarm goes of this is true, but now it goes of in blocks so it doesn't go off too much!!!

i've lived at exhange works this year and i can say that i have had such a laugh!!! yeh the fire alarm goes off but what do u expect with 400 students having to cook for themselves!!! all the building work is complete and now there is a proper courtyard and a stylish common for our use!!!

i dont notice the drug rehab place that much and i dont feel threatened, since ive been here i havent heard of any trouble.

Also the location is ace for city campus, the student union, train station, shops and it is walking distance to West Street and just round the corner from gate crasher.

Hey im hoping to be i Exchange Works also ist my first choice however i havent yet heard because i still need 2 send them a result which i get on thurs but fingers crossed!! What course you doing??
